Yeah, don't buy your CDs from supermarkets, buy them from cheap websites instead! Yay!

Over a period of time, if a band is lucky it comes to the attention of a lot of people. Hopefully that's down to gigging and radio play... but also down to you being able to buy the CDs. So record shops stock them. But unless it's a big band, you won't see it in the supermarkets - try finding, say, the new Fiery Furnaces album in there. Then, presto!... every now and then a band becomes famous. And once it is, the supermarkets sell it for little or no profit, denying revenue to the shops that helped support the band in the first place. The record shops do all the work, then the big supermarkets use their purchasing power to make money. They don't do anything for new music and breaking new bands - and if you buy CDs from them, you risk helping other record shops to close. And you may not even hear, say, the next Franz Ferdinand (again, that's an example and it doesn't matter whether you like them or not). Because there will be no shops to 'break' them for you one day...
