by James Moore
Artists: The Beta Band
The Beta Band have decided to withdraw their single 'Squares', due to its similarity to forthcoming track 'Daydream In Blue' by I Monster, a single that is expected to become a huge hit.

Both bands have the same sample taken from 'Daydream' by Gunter Kallman Choir. However, the I Monster track has been getting an increasing amount of radio airplay in the UK, and has been playlisted by Radio 1 this week, guaranteeing high-rotation airplay. 'Daydream In Blue' is set for release on 4th June, a week before the scheduled release date of The Beta Band's.

At the moment it's unclear if The Beta Band will re-record 'Squares', or if they will release another single from their upcoming album, 'Hot Shots II'. The album was co-produced by The Beta Band and Colin Emmanuel (a.k.a. C-Swing) and due to be released through Regal on 2nd July.

The full track listing is as follows:

01. Squares
02. Al Sharp
03. Humanbeing
04. Gone
05. Dragon
06. Broke
07. Quiet
08. Alleged
09. Life
10. Eclipse

Squares

Mark Radcliffe played this on Radio 1 today, it's weird how two bands have used the same sample in different ways at almost exactly the same time. It's a pretty cool song anyway, but I think I prefer the I Monster one. That said, I think it was Mary Anne-Hobbs who played the original last week and although I wasn't listening intently, I did think it was the I Monster version, so they haven't done *that* much to it.

Martin.
