TEAM: the 'Penalyn' lp
There’s a trip to be had; sitting on the bus to take you to the Seattle influenced doom palace that Team accommodate. Wallows of Soundgarden; Soundgarden when they were proper mind, like before ‘Superunknown’ made them all cheery and happy to get into bed with the rap rock fraternity.
’The ‘Penalyn’ l.p’ comes across as a record made by a band willing to accept that gloom metal serves as the most sensible approach for the first half of the day, and realising that art pop deserves a run out after halftime. Making sure that Kyuss and Goatsnake are afforded namechecks is also essential. Rock check.
You remember when Shellac wrote their waner bros. album? It’s like that. With a gritty northern wit and big gushing rock chunk choruses. Orchestral without violins.
And this is all before you get to the magical ‘myopia’. It wants to crush hearts with cheesy REM metal; it’s the track you always hoped would fall between sides one and two.
Team are ace; buy the ‘Penalyn’ lp.
Crash bang post rock boom.
