28 Costumes: The Fake Death Experience
by Mike DiverSomeone messed up. This isn’t meant to be happening now. Where are we? 2004? Fuck. Right, okay, no problem – everyone get in the back, we’re going for a ride.
Back in time.
Y’see, 28 Costumes don’t belong here, not now anyway. There’s something special here – a spark that just needs a little encouragement to roar into an uncontrollable inferno – and we need to take it back to the source. 1961, give or take. It’s not that far, we’ll be fine. We’ve got to give these boys the chance they missed through being too young, the chance to blow the pop music game wide open. What's that? Liverpool? We’re here. Everyone out.
Now, it’s not like I don’t recognise the significance of the Fab Four in contemporary popular music, but don’t you ever yearn for that bit more? Be fair, were it not for a floppy haircut and a complete lack of anything to do on a Friday night in the ‘Pool way back when, d’ya really think we’d be buying John fucking Lennon anthologies in 2004? Would we fuck, sir. Right, set it up over there. Yes, I know this is unethical, but fuck ethics, I want rock and roll. Ready? Hit it.
The new 2004. Merseybeat never happened. The La’s were never born. ‘Yesterday’ was a flash in the pan. John Lennon lives with his mental Japanese missus in the Wirral. ‘21 Years’ is covered by Pete Waterman’s latest pop project and gatecrashes the Christmas charts, knocking Band Aid from the top spot. ‘I Nearly Crashed My Car’ still closes indie discos across the land. ‘Hurricane’ jangles as well today as it did so many years ago. You're brand new, you're retro.
The new 2004 is bliss. No Thomas The Tank Engine on telly, mind.

28 Costumes - The Fake Death Experience
I don't agree with your words sir. I think its a fantastic album and deserving of much praise and huge sales. -
28 Costumes - The Fake Death Experience
He did give it four stars didn't he? Then again, a side note saying 'By the way, the album's not that bad' would have been helpful... -
Re: 28 Costumes - The Fake Death Experience
The text doesn't state that it is bad, anywhere.
The text implies that it is good, everywhere.
Maths, do the.

LAST WEEK'S SHENANIGANS IN LIVERPOOL:
* The Vines Ballroom - go and see it - wood panelling, pictures of 19th Century Mayors on the walls; built by the same people that built the Philarmonic and the pub by Lime St station and regarded as the pinnacle of architectural pub building in the 1800s. Seriously, people used to travel from all corners of Europe to visit them.
* So the Cossies had their Liverpool version of the aul' album launch there and the two hundred and fifty people there were greeted on the door by a giant kangaroo. The kangaroo bouncer had to turn people away. With a tail and a slap and a kiss for the prettiest boys and girls. With tongues, on occasion.
* There was free pie. Date and Apple. From www.limetreepantry.com , who endorse the Costumes and provide pies at their many excellent Fake Death Experience parties in an unprecedented link up between pastry providers and nascent off-kilter rock and roll pop bands.
* People were dressed up very posh indeed. I, myself, wore a suit for instance. Imagine a mix between lost victorian lovers with bounteous cleavages and bereft, pale, nostalgic-for-noddy indie kids and you're halfway there
* It looked like a mixture opf The Shining and a ballroom on The Titanic. With added beer and people snogging the dancefloor with their uncontrollably excited feet and lithe bodies
* Dom Newton played some of those cheeky bluesy banjo-based songs first. He was very excellent, and is a gfreat harmonica player.
* Bexy Sitch came on next and were poppy and barmy and angry and charming and beautiful and going far
* The pies were eaten very quickly and lots was eaten and some was spilt on the floor
* As were the party poppers, glitter and free gifts handed out by 28 Costumes
* Who came onstage to some hard-scarey-monk-chanty-music
* Dressed as vicars
* And prayed for 3 minutes whilst the audience stood enraputured and spiritually hungry
* The band played riotously and brilliantly and with joy and effervescence and people's bodies smiled all over with the stunning sheen of love at life and music and beer and dancing and kissing and off-kilter pop music
all was good.
