Somewhere in the mists of time direction was lost; what was once on the rails and rallying to kids old and young came spectacularly off, piledriving the mainstream and leaving those hungry for integrity and pure, from-the-heart passion empty. Punk rock today is little more than a slogan sprawled across tennie-bopper blouses; a buzz term for PRs shopping their latest wares. Jetplane Landing exist to show us how and where to get off the buzzes.

Fuck the PRs and fuck the chainstore-propelled mass consumption bullshit: THIS is what punk is about. You want nourishing? Try this 23-track single. You read that right. Not only does There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger feature said final track from JPL’s Once Like A Spark album (oh, you know – furious, fast and passionate), but tagged after it like some additional over-sized growth on Lemmy’s face are a slew of session tracks and a complete live set recorded at London’s Islington Academy. Sure, the quality’s not up there with ‘proper’ live albums (the whole thing’s captured by a single microphone set up above the stage), but the energy comes through as vividly as if you were there yourself. If you were, you need this. If not, well, you need it even more.

If that didn’t represent value enough, the profits from this single go to the International Committee of the Red Cross. So you, the forgotten kids, get your punk rock, and they give the money to charity.

At this time of year, it’s almost too perfect a pairing.

Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

There's also four brand new songs on this EP, which are rather fine indeed.

The live recording is outstanding - you can really hear the passion in the performance. It was at the end of a 30-date tour, and they still tear into every song as if it's both the first and the last time they'll play them.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless

Wow, this sounds great.

They are so, so good live.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless

I second that - without doubt the most impressive live performances I've seen all year have come from this band

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless

All I know is that I was highly sceptical about the band when my mate dragged me along to the Islington Academy that day, but I ended up embarressing him by jumping like a lunatic and shouting "they made me do it!" at the top of my voice. It was great! Nice review by the way...

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless

Heh, I did the same thing at that gig. It's the Islington Academy gig on the CD, and listening back to it was magical.

Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

does it have a repeat of the infamous, truck festival
"HEY YOU ON YOUR PHONE - FUCK OFF. PHONES ARE SO UN PUNKROCK. LECTURING YOUR AUDIENCE ABOUT FUCK ALL OVER BREAKDOWNS IS SO VERY COOL"?

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

i was there.
they had a go at someone for daring to answer their phone during the gig.
does it have a repeat of the infamous, truck festival
it was a breakdown
he was lecturing us.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

As I said, only part of your "quote" was correct - the bit about telling someone to shut the fuck up. The rest made no sense, and was little more than gibberish TYPED IN CAPITALS.

Frankly, it's severely fucking annoying when people yap into mobiles at gigs - I normally tell them to shut the fuck up. Too few bands take any interest in what goes in the crowd, it's good to see someone who does.

He wasn't lecturing "us", he was lecturing some little bastard who decided that his conversation was *so* damned important, everyone else around him could go hang because he had to talk. If he wanted to answer his phone, he should have fucked off out of the barn.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

for all you fucking know he was a massive fan and calling someone who couldn't make it so they could hear the gig.
his short attack on one fan was part of a larger lecture that was towards all of us.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

thats nothing - at norwich, apparently he stopped about 3 times to have a go at the crowd for moshing. something like 'look, we've come here to play for you, so you should listen'. or it could've been the other way round, not moshing. i don't recall.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

thats fair point, i have called ppl before in middle of gigs when they have been big fans so they can have a listen.

love this band tho! amazing live. i remember andrew telling me they were going to do a live album. at £4 too its a bargain

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

cant remember the last time i saw a new release single cost as much as £4.

the whole thing is in many ways a very good idea - theres so much space not used on a cd single, lets fill it up - and good on them for giving proceeds to charity (i always thought that bands barely made any money from such things, so to give it away is almost stupidly admirable), but really it is just a pretty crappy (sound quality + they arent really very good) album being released for £4.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

I can remember the last time a single came out with a CD1, CD2 (and sometimes a DVD), often costing well over £4, yet only having around 4 new tracks. The live recordings may be fairly roughly recorded, but they are only 14 of the tracks on the thing - the rest are studio sessions and demos, and sound ace.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

From what I've seen, anything that is over 3 tracks in length tends to go for £2.99 - recent examples have been that there DiS Martha Wainwright EP, and one by The Drama, put out by Fierce Panda. £4 is, although probably not *new* single priced, what you'd generally pay for a single after the first week of release.

(sound quality + they arent really very good)

The sound quality is fine - every instrumental / vocal is more that audible, the recording isn't flat and lifeless. I've got a load of bootlegs, and this knocks spots off 99% of them. What, I assume, Mr Diver means is that it doesn't have the corrections / production sheen given to most live recordings - its as raw and honest as you'll get, but still completely listenable.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

in virgin oxford street last week it was even cheaper then £3.99, £1.99 instead!!! although even that couldn't tempt me to buy

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

That's odd, I bought it from Virgin Oxford Street last week for £3.99...

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

Same here - the shelf edge said £1.99, but the CDs were individually priced at £3.99, thus preventing any blags.

Damn.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

In my humble opinion they're one of the very best live bands in Britain. I work as a sound engineer in a medium sized music venue (500 capacity) and see nearly a 1000 bands come through each year, but I guess each to their own...

Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

iv not seen this in anyshops ..... but godamn am i gonna get it

even poor recordings of JPL blow a lot of bands out of the water.....plus all those tracks on a single! value for money for sure !

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

Just buy it.
And it's great.
I don't know how people can complain.
If they don't like the band, it's OK.
But you can't complain that a band give so much for their fans for so little money !

Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

Its a great release for £3.99 and with profits going to charity, why fucking moan, least theres 23 tracks to choose from instead of 1 rubbish 'cover'.

Yes the live show aint the best quality,( ever heard a gbv lp?) but in a years time ppl will be saying , 'sheeeewoozer' i wish i bought that. Or to some effects that phrase.

Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless There Is Real Danger

saying the live tracks aren't great quality is rather pointing out the obvious, the above review says so, heck, the sleeve notes even say so. I'm sure if they'd wanted to put out a top quality live recording they would've shelled out for it but that was never the point, this is DIY and the fact it even sounds as good as it does is a testament to the sound guy, who always makes them sound great.

My favourite rant on the Cd is on 'conventional thought' and it's rallying call 'They made me do it!'

"THINK ABOUT IT! WHAT DID THEY FUCKING MAKE YOU DO"

magic
