im very tired of reading and hearing about young whipper snappers such as the whoremoans and trash pussies getting press for being......dj's. This is not a REAL professional, it is someone playing cds at a club, they are not talented. I found out the other week that the trash pussies (peaches geldof) is dj'ing at my freshers ball. she 17, too young to be at the venue anyway. ppffffttt.i hate them all.
but there is a definite difference between being a good dj
and being a dj just because your press manager can get you the gig.
rather a difference between
a dj and a 'name' dj.
i'd love to dj, but i accept it would be me with my mp3 player and cds and that there isn't real skill required.
cut chemist and shadow on the other hand....
i'm seeing cut chemist tomorrow. he is skillful.
proper
djing is a skill (paul woolford/nic fanciulli etc)
peaches/queens of noise djing is not. its a tool for them to get laid/ease along there fame.
big difference.
sexism in music? pah.
I saw
Andy Rourke dj. He used iTunes! It's NOT just girls who are shit!
i agree
but then i hate all of them. especially that mairead slag
^
i'd probably refer to both of them as turntablists... the art of putting a mix of sounds/music/noise together to generate a new sound/music/noise;)
whereas djing, which i admit i do time to time (with cds and vinyl) is simply playing pre-recorded tunes...
well that's how i view it anyways...
^
that's cut chemist and the likes obviously...
djing is fun.
sure, it's no greenpeace mission, but it's enjoyable.
DJing a good set
that gets crowds dancing and keeps them dancing is actually quite a skill. you really have to know your stuff.
and that's without bringing any sort of mixing or beat matching into it.
in conclusion: you're talking rubbish.
Look below, Why it's
Burt Reynolds vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
Am agreeing with Guntrip mostly - good djing is a skill to be learnt
*certainly not saying I have it
I'm in love with a few certain DJs
but this crosses over into their remix work too, so that might be one of the reasons
Erol Alkan's set at Bestival was fuckin rad. He played the Switch remix of Bump!
no, being a dj is not a skill
for fucks sake...
oh my god, the crowd is dancing! wow... because you did what?
put a record on?
wow...
gee whiz....
how does he do that?
Go watch Jeff Mills.
Reconsider your opinions.
done it.
so what??
it's an artform like, oh... juggling?
big deal....
Like, oh...
playing the guitar?
Big deal.
-=sigh=-
no, playing the guitar takes skill...
being a master yo-yo artist is a fucking joke...
something you can learn in a couple days is not on the same level as actually learning to play a musical instrument...
for fucks sake...
here you go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oP7RTKQ8CE
something for you to aspire to...
You can learn to play a guitar
(badly) in a couple of days, same as you can learn to DJ (badly) in a couple of days.
I'm the worlds greatest living guitarist, but I can't DJ for toffee. Go figure.
I'd love to be a master yo-yo artist.
Can't do that either.
But, I reiterate, I'm better than Jimdrix.
why stop at being a master DJ???
why not really push yourself and be the world champion tv watcher?
or the worlds best refrigerator mover?
and people wonder why the world is so fucked up...
jesus fucking christ...
Is there a tv watching championship?
I'm up for that!!!
Seriously, what's the difference. People do stuff, some people are better at stuff than others. We can call it 'art', we can call it 'gluttony contests', all the same in the end.
Now I'm off to break the world record for pogo-sticking across cornwall.
yes fair point...
only problem is society is slowly going down the toilet because of shit like this...
why learn to play guiar? why have music classes at school, dj classes are so much cheaper and the kids love them!
arrrrggggghhhhhh!@!!!!!!
youre being completely fucking stupid
djing is not comparable to watching tv in any way whatsoever. its more akin to editing/producing a tv show.
it can be done badly, and still be popular, just like with tv, or playing the guitar, or any other creative endeavour, and if you have a problem with that, fine. yes, it sucks that that things done shitly can be popular. have a banana.
even before you bring in the technical aspects of djing well, theres the simple ability needed to judge what will go well, what will get a good reaction, when to introduce people to new music, when to play things that they'll know, which version of a song to play.
id guess that youve never been to a remotely good club in your life?
-=yawn=-
gee, is that like knowing when a really good tv show is going to be on and then turning on the tv?
wow...
i'm amazed...
you're right... i was soooo wrong...
oh yeah...
so, knowing what song will get people dancing...
wow... fucking hell how do they do that?
i can't imagine how they do it...
i mean, there they are...
faced with a crowd of morons...
drunk/off their face... out to have a good time...
and then there is the DJ... oh my god...
what record is he going to play???
fuck, i could never do that...
have you ever DJed?
are you kidding???
shit, i wouldn;t know where to start...
i mean, you got play, stop, next...
good lord...
and then there is picking the music...
fucks sake...
you would have to a some kind of musical genius...
good lord...
You sir are a cock
Or my Dad
my dad used to DJ to soldiers
in vietnam
he played a lot of boney m
"marlowx talks more absolute crap" shocker!
dun dun duhhhhhhhh!
i bet you guys are impressed with yo yo tricks too...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es7c0kVDI7s
what
an idiot
christ marlowx
you really have no idea about djing :O
have u ever looked at a mixer, or efx pad? joe bloggs can't fucking use them
i use a mixer everyday...
check it out...
raise fader up, volume goes up...
lower fader down, volume goes down...
wow... sophisticated shit, no?
next week we'll start on panning shit left and right... that will blow your mind...
but you're just fading songs in and out?!
so your ignoring all the effects and the beatmatching. good work
the latter half of this thread annoys me
DJing is not just about cross fading and putting a record on... Go and hear someone like Ivan Schmagge play or any credible dj and watch what happens... watch the crowd's reaction and take a look at what they are actually doing.. it's a fucking skill and is soooooooooo much more than putting a few records on. I suggest you go to a few (credible and organised) parties across a few dance floors before you guys comment on how 'pointless' it actually is... And beat matching - well, to do THAT properly is something else...
no...
that comes later...
i'm teaching you how to do it...
you gotta walk before you can run my son...
wax on wax off...
^
if its that fucking obviously easy then why are most people completely disagreeing with you? hmm... because your point is ill-informed and arrogant. "oh, im in a band, unless you're playing the guitar/bass/drums you're not talented". you prick. so you're saying you could do the shit most DJs do?go try it n see how far you get.bellend.
^to marlowx
(that was a bit wound up, sorry but you are talking crap)
by the way marlowx
just noticed you're a photographer. i know a lot of artists who would say thats not a skill, you're just pressing a button and pointing at stuff that's already there, you're not creating anything "wow, you opened the shutter, well done!"...hmmmmm, disagree? yeh, me too. see any parallels?
interesting analogy, werk
photography has always been seen as the lesser credible artform amongst some schools of art.. as you liken the DJ thang... Personally I fucking love photography - and DJing (punter and player on both accounts).
Nice one. Arguement wrapped up concisely.
Drums? Talent?
Oh look at me, I can hit a large object with a stick. Why not just masturbate on stage, it's the same thing.
Marlow, you are a cock.
have you studied drumming?
unlike fading in one cd/record and fading out the other...
or scratching a record back and forth etc etc...
drumming involves skill and musicianship...
can you play two rythems at the same time?
i bet you can't...
sure, drummers aren't the sharpest tools in the shed... but they got more going for them than people who think turning on a cd player is an artform...
just because flies like shit doesn't mean shit is good...
regarding photography...
the reason photography was scandolous back in the dark ages... was because the art world revolved around things like painting... and drawing...
and a photo gave you a portrait of some chick without having the knowlegde of painting or drawing a chick etc etc...
but the subtle thing is that to take a good photo you need to compose the shot, set the exposure and also print it (printing photos is also considered to be a fine craft or art in itself)
i would equate photography and painting to synths and traditional acoustic instruments...
both got some stick in the beginning... but both are used to create great art....
a dj well, they just turn on a player and hit play...
basically..
oh yeah, there are the "cool" tricks... wow...
its not on the same level...
i don't expect you to understand that though...
And
just because you like Goldfrapp doesn't mean Goldfrapp are good
*guffaws*
Seriously though, you have good DJs and you have bad DJs. I have no idea what kind of clubs you go to, but they're probably the wrong ones if you can't appreciate how mixing/reading a crowd could possibly be a skill
Hopefully one day a DJ somewhere will trigger some kind of epiphany (without the use of substances), and all will be forgiven...
epiphany?
by playing a record?
i woudln't atribute any epiphany to some slob who played a record...
to the composer of the record yes, but not the tosser who pressed play...
reading a crowd? like should you slow things down or rawk out etc...
wow, that may be a skill... but some sense of proportion please!!!
good grief....
and i'd rate being able to
make a good coffee higher than that "reading a crowd"
Congratulations on taking my choice of words far too literally
Slob? Nice generalisation
This is a pointless argument. Anybody in the world who has ever been entertained by a talented DJ would find your opionion beyond laughable
In all seriousness, it's a shame that you feel that way
entertainer???
fine, a dj can be a great entertainer...
great...
artist? give me a break...
marlowx, am sure that within your head there is some level of reasoning
grow up.
you must be a dj???
-=yawn=-
Grow the fuck up.
Seriously. If you could seriously hear what a wanker you sound like (read like) you'd cringe. Totally.
yes, you are a dj?
so, how can you tell me with a straight face that you putting on a record that SOMEONE ELSE COMPOSED AND RECORDED makes you the artist?
think about it.
just because you play someone's great record...
doesn't mean you are as great / amazing or talented as the composer/artist...
what it means is you may or may not have good taste in music...
THAT IS ALL.
One of my best friends told me about a dj she saw at the joiners.
He made her boyfriend dance.
Her boyfriend NEVER dances.
That is all.
no...
the music that someone other than the dj made...
did that...
I'm not calling myself an artist
I am saying that there are good and bad dj's, as there are good and bad photographers, musicians, singers, artists etc...
And there are some DJ's who actually know what the fuck they are doing.. how to set a pace, a vibe, and mix wonderfully.
Scratching.. sampling - doing it properly and creating new beats and sounds live... not an easy thing to do. And yeah, there are a lot of fuckers out there who think that putting a record on makes them a DJ. I'm not brilliant at it at all and actually consider myself to 'play records' but for god's sake, I've heard some amazing sets that 'not anyone' could just get up there and do.
Dismissing it like you have with such conviction shows a certain sense of naievity (sp?) and well, arrogance, quite frankly.
PS - I don't like cds - prefer vinyl
well, that is impressive...
you
are an asshole.
THAT IS ALL
Let's get Darth onto him
haha
that'd be sweet.
that youtube cured my hangover (kinda)
thanks for that.
no worries :)
"ya mama's goin' on a date, can you dig that?"
LOL in the literal sense
I'm gonna get a cup of tea and watch it again. Fabulous. James Earl Jones wins (Coming to America - bestest comedy)
Actually
I am in fact one of the self-same blunt trowels you make mention to in your post, can play two rhythms at the same time (just about), and I've seen one of my friends do things to a pair of turntables I couldn't do in "a few days". Maybe you can throw around ill-informed musical opinion on AOL and expect to pass it off as irrefutable fact, but not here.
And...please...stop...doing...this...
.
I hate....
this lame..
style of posting.
whatever, nobody listens to drummers...
WTF?
Look, am sure you are a really nice person in the real world but bloody hell, you need to stop being so fucking emo about this.
geesh...
for people who think DJ'ing is an art you take yourselves way to seriously...
lighten up!
it's playing back other people's music... wow...
read the comment someone made about turntablists and dj's at the top of this thread...
get a grip...
and "doing thinngs with turntables that i couldn't do" does not make art...
sure, it might be amazing... for people with low standards... but in the realm of human history, endeavors and accomplishments it ranks below those domino sculptures... you know where the dude tips the last domino over and then they all fall down consecutively?
peace out...
does that mean youre leaving?
marlowx
what part of my posts did you not understand?
and you wouldn't have a clue how seriously high my standards are.
i actually do think that in years go come, the art of 'djing' will be remembered - it's created a cultural revolution, hasn't it? or are you mostly living in the amazong?
the technics SL deck is also a style/design icon in much the same way an iPod is...
*Amazon
*can't spell
design icon????
so?
and?
your references to accomplishments etcetera
(and apart from it being a design icon, it's a workhorse too - they never die).
so? my design icon toilet plunger and i have been to hell and back...
and it is still looking brand new!
i must be an artist!
i've got a toilet plunge that is a design icon...
does that make me an artist?
*plunger
oh for fuck's sake
grow up.
I'm naive about DJing in general
So please could someone explain to me, and to try possibly enlighten marlowx, what a DJ needs actually does whilst playing the music? I don't mean the ones who intergrate more than one song by matching up the beats (hah, sorry that was put so badly), but the ones in your average club that puts on pre-made songs. I just want it clarified how that actually works, because i'm actually geniunly interested what skill it takes? I presume it really isn't just selecting songs, pressing play and fading in and out, unlike what some people apparently think...
