Every Time I Die: Gutter Phenomenon
Every Time I Die have returned with their third album, primed with vocal coaching for their stomping hardcore plunder.
Gutter Phenomenon features their trademark swinging jackhammer guitars that pummel away frantically with distorted staccato riffs over jazzed up drum rhythms, but now Keith Buckley’s often overpowering scream has been tamed by his desire for vocal coaching. Having slowly veered from their darkened ways over the years this is clearly ETID’s most accessible record, helped along by cameo appearances by apparent brothers-in-arms Daryl Palumbo of the seemingly defunct Glassjaw and Gerard Way of the, currently not defunct at all, My Chemical Romance.
Even Hot Damn! had a cleaner sound than their previous grittier offerings and enough harmonies and handclaps for even the most hardened emo kid to take note of. This progression has, of course, led to more singing and even more complex harmonies, mainly at the expense of the rawer qualities of Buckley’s screaming. This album has many more ‘rock’ influences in it than previous releases but while it always seemed like something new before there is an underlying sense that some tracks on Gutter Phenomenon were just off-cuts from the cutting edge hardcore of their last album.
This conservative effort will probably benefit hugely from having emo heroes guesting on it. It will benefit even more from having sharp and nifty refrains such as: “Hey there, girls! I’m a cunt!” They will all be singing it without the knowledge of how good this band used to be.

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
thats not good, not good at all.
so now ill see loads of emo kids wearing tshirts for one of my favourite bands, bugger. i did hear a new ETID track on a rock sound CD, and it did lack there raw edge of old, so perhaps they have passed there peak. which is sad news.-

Not particularly. Theyre not that noticeable...I only realised it was Gerard Way's voice after reading in the book whih song he featured on. He doesnt even spoil it, its a fucking awesome song. I couldnt really pick out Daryl Palumbo's voice either.
I think the album is fantastic, its different to Hot Damn! definitely, its less punky and the vocals are more screamed rather than shouted. It alo sounds more like The Bled. It Fucking Rules. And That.

Duuuuude.
EtiD were picked up by the emo/hardcore scene a long long time ago.
Wake up man!!

Re: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
yeah, but
ahh forget about it.
ok in other words this is the breakthrough album, its just dont like it that they are in the roadrunner roster for real now, roadrunner freaks me out, *shudders*. its where good bands go to die.-
Re: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
no way
roadrunner is great
look at chimaira
look at slipknot
they both actually got better once roadrunner gave them time to evolve into real metal
obviously rule of thumb is not applicable to all
there are 4 other fingers

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
ah damn, you make me feel old... i remember when a band being embraced by the emo-core kids would have been taken as an achievement. Mind you, back then My Chemical Romance would have been tagged as shiny mainstream rock...
i suppose bands can't make the same album over and over, but hell, couldn' t they have just got dirtier and harder...
last call, kill it, kill it.-

"i suppose bands can't make the same album over and over, but hell, couldn' t they have just got dirtier and harder..."
exactly, not polished like it seems from the song ive heard, "champing at the bit".

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
Gutter Phenomenon's actually only their third album, not their fourth. they had an EP before Last Night In Town though.
in my opinion, this album is fucking brilliant. though the musicianship is just as powerful and Keith's vocals are in my opinion unchanged in terms of quality, the songs lack that shout-a-long-accessability that Hot Damn! and Last Night In Town had, which is quite dissapointing. though some people might see that as a good thing, it almost removes the edge they're famous for. but i still think it's a damn good album, one of the best of the year.-
Re: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
now ive heard it, i take it all back
its great, :D

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
This record is amazing, it's so fun. And hooky as fuck. Just because it's more accesible, and wee emo kids wear their shirts, doesnt mean it's mainstream and unoriginal.
And Glassjaw are not defunct.-
Re: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
one thinks you missed every point there, emo girl

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
Um, what point exactly? I was making my own. And am I emo because of my Glassjaw statement? I think it would be a mistake to call Glassjaw emo.
Oh, and the record is on Ferret Music. It's just been licensed in Europe by Roadrunner because they distribute Ferret over here. Which means we dont have to pay a silly price for the record as an import... which can only be a good thing right?-
Re: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
it cost me less to import the Ferret version over here, including post and packaging, than it would've cost me to buy it here.-
Re: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
cool... where from?-

so as long as they keep clear of those im happy -
Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
every time i die are fucking legends and you need to hear the album all the way through before you bad mouth it. unlike any of these other bands with the fantastic metalcore/hardcore/black-my-eyes-and-cut-my-wrists-and-wear-crotch-hugging-trouser-core label, i think every time i die have been unfairly thrown into this group - their music doesn't make me want to cry or any of that shit - no, no, no, if anything this is party music, and makes me want to drink wiskey and kick out teeth.
superb!
