Your gig of 2006

Lightning Bolt at Luminarie / Afrirampo at Cargo

GO!

  • Gay Against You, anywhere.

Scholar & Physician at Truck was pretty brilliant. Real sense of adventure and occasion.

Antony & The Johnsons at QEH.

The Knife at Scala. Not Forum.

Jasmine says Team Brick. She is right.

Tim Ten Yen at The Garage was really special.

    • I loved Tim Ten Yen at the Garage

      That was hot.

      • a gallows gig

        or a 65dos gig

        can't decide which

  • I hate these questions

because pretty much all of the gigs I went to this year were amazing.
Some of them stand out more because of who I was with and what was going on in my life... so in no order, this is who I've seen this year... that I can remember...

    Hearts of Black Science
    Sebastien Tellier
Joey Negro - Salsoul grooovalicious nights that rock...
    Final Fantasy...
    The Knife
    Methodaire
    Guillemots
Twisted Most Definately (BLIM, Gowan, Tamsin, Damian, Chris Carter)
    Help She Can't Swim

    iLiKETRAiNS
    The Hundred Handed
    Editors
    :(
    Bell Orchestre
    The Go! Team
    Matthew Herbert
    Germlin
    The Puppini Sisters
    Hot Chip
    Goldfrapp
    The Mescalitas

    Lou Donaldson
    Pet Shop Boys
    Kirmann
Brainlove Records showcase at Notting Hill Arts Club
Tim Ten Yen at The Garage, Shimura Curves
Various WHATEVER and COMPUTER BLUE and the odd ANTISOCIAL evening
The rather Manson-esque 'Arthur Brown' ('FIIIIIIIRE')

    • You saw Arthur Brown?????

Does he still have his flaming hat? i saw a bit of him on Glasto coverage a few years ago and it was halarious.

      • I did indeed see Arthur Brown.. he looked like Charles Manson

        FACT

    • The Hundred Handed?!

      Can I get a SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET?

      • Yeah, sure:

        SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

    • stop showing off

  • Massive Attack @Wireless

    TVOTR@Koko

    • TVOTR?

      Koko?

      BUT THE SOUND?!

      • Massive attack at wireless??

But it was awful - possibly the worst I've ever seen Massive!!!

        • the band themselves were great

but it was completely ruined by the awful awful crowd that was there.

"They sound a bit like Faithless, don't they?"

          DEATH

  • set or gig?

    • going on just sets

gay against you @ cardiff buffalo, a warehouse

i was sure there were other things that made me overexcited at the time tho

  • Emmy the Great at Thekla

    It was free.

  • Animal Collective at Astoria

closely followed by Gang Gang Dance at Luminaire.

      Boredoms at Shepards Bush Empire
Final Fantasy/Grizzly Bear at the Luminaire
Gay Against You at the Old Blue Last.

      Probably more, I forget.

      • Islands at Bardens were great

and Boredoms at ATP was one of my favourite too.

Low doing Things We Lost In The Fire was grand too.

        • i agree- with bobby george

but sound of koko again was dubious..

          • I thought the sound, for once, was good

but we were stood right by the sound desk.

    • favs

      65daysofstatic @ Southampton Joiners
      Mogwai @ Southampton Uni
      Flaming Lips @ Bournemouth BIC
      Howling Bells @ Joiners
      The Pipettes @ Joiners

How can I pick a favorite?

  • tilly and the wall

    at the sheffield leadmill

    jeremy warmsley at sheffield plug

mates of state at nottingham social (supporting the new pornographers)

the chalets at sheffield fuzz club

belle and sebastian at sheffield octagon

    there'll be some I missed I know!

    • the shins at nottingham rock city

      • i should also

probably wait until atp is over before finalising this!

        • wasn't the chalets

or did i miss them? again.

I went to it was great. Especially the 'no children' singalong.

      • yeh, sorry...

and he played my request for the last song. i'm an awful person.

        • what did you request?

          • the best ever death metal band in denton

            or "bessevadeffmale" as i shouted.

            • omg.

              i hate you gareth.
if we'd have got owen to play 'carload of whatever', that would officially make you the luckiest boy of the year.
              ung.
that was the first mountain goats song i ever heard!

              • but...

you were at the bristol gig when owen did play 'carload of whatever' weren't you? so maybe that makes up for it. i was happy enough that he just responded to our shouts at the louisiana: "no bangers".
and he drew a shark on my record.
                yahoo!

              • Someone requested a really old song

off one of the first tapes and he played it. I didn't recognise the song though.

that was absolutely life-changing, but Tiger Force at 93 Feet East were aces,as were Kaito supporting The Liars (if only because it's the last time I'll see them). But I think my prize goes to CSS at Dingwalls.

      • Sleater-Kinney

        @Oran Mor in Glasgow.

Their last UK show :( I stalked them all the way up the country but this was the best show they did, absolutely blew me away. Plus it was the first time I have been to Glasgow and it's a magic city.

Nobody else even came close even though I saw some very fine shows this year.

  • I have been to 12 gigs this year

none of them were actually better than any others really. but they were good.

TV On The Radio and Tilly & The Wall at leeds were probably the best.

  • radiohead at murrayfield

the venue couldave been better but its my first time seeing them and theyre my favourite band of ever. the "singalong" atmosphere was great.

Joint first with them is 65daysofstatic at barfly. Amazing, electrix, i was dancing like an idiot and it was great.

other notable mentions go to final fantasy, tv on the radio, and forward russia (supporting we are scientists). My minds gone blank, but i remember there being a few more great ones.

    • either

Maccabees at Reading or Les inc at Way Out West

      • Napoleon IIIrd at Leeds Festival...

Bloc Party at Academy 3 in Manchester.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and :( at the Roadhouse.

The Playmates farewell show at Unity Day in Leeds.

They're pretty much the main ones that stick in my head at the moment.

  • Down

    at newcastle university

phil anselmo clean and on form in a dirty basement with a low ceiling leading the metal supergroup through a flawless set of unstoppable power.

    and!

at one point the crowd started a chant of "toon toon black & white army" and anselmos response was "i don't know what the fuck you guys are saying but if it means the best then thats us"
and the chant changed to a deafening roar of "SHEARER SHEARER SHEARER"
    amazing

Chet and William at the Fox in Lewisham. All 3 bands could've headlined. God bless the Blue Light District.

Closely followed by Metric and Komakino at Camden Barfly.

    • ooh

I forgot about that National gig. That was awesome.

  • I posted this somewhere else actually

I find it difficult to remember.

LIARS! yes. Myself and my bezzie mate went to see them at Leicester Square, y'know the one. God damn that band were on fucking fire that night. We had always spoken of seeing PIL live when they ruled the whole of the world, and seeing Liars that night was a very close second. Danced!? I aced.

Totally different was Yo La Tengo. I have never bought any of their records but a (different) friend is a big fan. We agreed to go, I bought a ticket and he remembered it was his girlfriend's birthday. So I went by myself. I was feeling a bit flu-ey but as The Forum is around the corner I watched a crap Ewan McGregor film with Andrea, and went late on anyway. Oh they were lovely. I didn't know any songs but they just went on and on playing beautiful music. The atmosphere was incredible, really friendly. I walked out into the lights of Kentish Town with the biggest grin on my face.

Honourable mentions to: Lightning Bolt at the Luminaire, Part Chimp every fucking where - the most consistently excellent band I have seen, Mogwai at ICA and RAH, Sunn wow in Islington and LSq, Buff Medways about 6,7, 8? times this year at the Dirty Water Club, Oneida and YYY at ATP.

  • My favourite 2006 gigs are:

    Morrissey at Alexander Palace
    Hot Chip at Astoria
    Radiohead at Hammersmith
    Lightning Bolt at Luminaire
Mountain Goats at Old Blue Last
    Final Fantasy, La Scala

...too many more to list down. Almost every gig I have been to this year has been amazing actually.

  • I've just remembered

    Nervous Test Pilot at Truck

    acest thing ever.

    • indeed

I wish I saw the whole set instead of being bored to tears by Darren Hayman

      • yeah that was mega good

i seem to have vague memories of sweat pouring off me whilst i went mad.

the walkoff at truck was also mind blowing.

    • oh, and A Hawk & A Hacksaw and volcano! at the Luminaire

worst band i saw this year, by some stretch, were Barbarians supporting Coughs at Barden's.

      • i love barbarians

        :(

        • why?

they're noise music made by people who have no idea what noise music should be about.

          they aren't even very loud.

          what's the point?

i was optimistic, as one of them had a Rollins Band shirt on, but then they proceeded to bore me to unchartered depths of my soul.

          • Indeed.

They were so bad. A contact mic in a gas cooker? Fuck off.

    • Gang of Four at Wireless

or the Brian Jonestown Massacre at Koko.

  • With a thread like that

you're going to get a flood. My favourites this year were Tilly at the nambucca and ok, i'm an old bastard but seeing Brian Wilson do Pet Sounds a few weeks ago was special. Please don't someone say Razorlight or Arctic Monkeys though.

    • Arctic Monkeys

Were god awful at Leeds Fest. Fratellis were the highlight of the weekend, they were amazing!
The Who were also pretty disappointing.. but at least I can say I've seen them!
The Streets at Leeds Uni were fantastic, as were the Flaming Lips at O2 Wireless. I had a giggy year!!

      • well...

these are the ones that really stand out for me.

        Buck 65 at Truck
        Mono at Underworld
        Sufjan Stevens at Barbican

        • you liked that jeniferever gig?

god i thought it was awful, i love the band, but the sound was just atrocious

  • it took me a while to think about this

is my memory seems to have stopped working.

My vote goes to Frank Turner at Camden Barfly because:

    - it was a brilliant happy atmosphere,
    - all the supports were really good...
    - ...including a rare solo set from Jamie Lenman of Reuben fame,
    - it was the gig where he recorded a crowd singalong to one of his songs for the album, and I've never heard any crowd sing so loud and in such unity before.

    :)

    • Dunno

realy enjoyed the futureheads at pyramids centre actualy. The enemy are now the worst band ive seen. Replaced the metro riots.

    • ah.

aww yes, that was a good gig!i enjoyed dancing and singing all night.

wasn't too fond of the jamie lenman set, though i really love reuben

  • one answer

mogwai at the royal albert hall.

worth a mention would be low & bat for lashes at the dlb gig and arab strap at the abc.

    • I don't know why...

...but I found Mogwai at the Royal Albert Hall a little underwhelming.

      • really?

were you seated? I was right down the front, pretty central, so couldn't have wished for much better sound and I just thought that the show, setlist, production and everything were fantastic and the RAH was a perfect venue for a mogwai show.

        • Don't get me wrong...

I really enjoyed it. They just didn't transport me like they did at Glastonbury a few years ago. Admittedly, I wouldn't say I'm their biggest fan in the first place. Whenever I dare to suggest they may be a bit over-rated, people tend to get quite violent.
