Pronouncing band names wrong

Embarrassing yes?

I was once the laughing stock of a Curlupanddie gig after thinking their name was pronounced 'Curlew pandy'. It was not good for my scene cred...

A lot of bands ask for it though

If they choose a name that's not clear how to pronounce then it's hardly anyone's fault if no-one can pronounce the thing.

I can't pronounce Sufjan properly

I pronounce it suff-jan when it's like soof-yan or something.

also Sigur Ros. How do you pronounce this?

I say

sigyur ross

but then I say ig you are nah
so don't trust me.

this is what i say as well

but i know it's wrong.

According to their bassist

it's Si-ur Rose, but the 'Rose' is said fast.
There's a recording of him saying it somewhere on the website.

Seegur Roz

?

Should be See-or Rose

Or so I was once told by someone from Iceland. Apparently its a pretty common girls name.

yeah

i seem to remember they have a pronunciation guide on their website, actually.

trufact

and i do try to pronounce it right but i always feel a bit of a nonce.

\\\\\\\\\

it means "victory rose"

the girl.....

she's pretty AND common?? :P

When I saw Sufjan Stevens

live, he introduced himself as "Suf-ian" Stevens.

anyone know how to pronounce

autechre? eh?

Like this:

autechre.

Does that help?

ah

cheers.

or-teck-er

^

wrong

or-tech-re, innit.
au-dio
tech-nical
re-search

I still purposely call

Jack Penyaaaahhhhhtay as jack pen-eight.

twunt!

^

Caustic!

i learn all my pronunciations

from jools holland.

i'm a big fan of:
radioHEAD!
martha wainWRIGHT!
crowDED HOUSE!
and AT the drive IN!

ha

I hate

to use this youth-speak, but LOL!

What?

No!

:)

I was joking! I heard a rumour that they got their name from a hairdressers called 'Curl Up And Dye' though. Good band, RIP.

There's a hairdressers

called that near New Cross I think.

Aereogramme

i said Aero-gram for a long time

Los Campesinos! i'm still not sure about.
I think Camp-ess-een-ohs sounds better than camp-ess-een-oss though

and how are you meant to say Asobi Seksu? i played them on my radio show the other day and took a guess but i could be way off

I'd say

A so be sex you

i'd so be sex you too

but back to the pronounciations...

sounds japanese

so pronounce everything

ah-so-bee sek-su

playful sex in japanese, apparently.

Charalambides

Les Rallizes Denudes

I always struggle with these two.

lay

rallies
de-nude

is the closest i can get to it due to my total lack of ability in pronouncing french words

I'd say

Lay Ral-i-zay De-nood-ay

I'd probably be wrong though.

yes, you would

"ay" is when the e has an accent (é)

otherwise it's not stressed.

dEUS

I remember a bootlegger saying, 'Get your Juice T- Shirts'.........

ha ha

ha ha ha

I thought that too when i first looked at their name!

aww.

he was confusing them with proto-Steps poppers Deuce.

*hazy, fond memories*

I just say Charalambides how is it spelt.

But something tells me that the CH sound at the beginning shouldn't be pronounced, as if you took H out. I don't know why....

Caralambides.

Anyone??

.

har-al-am-bee-dee's i was told once by some greek guy.

Hahahaha, i was way off!

Thank fuck none of my friends know who they are anyway when i speak of them

Apparently it's a Greek surname

so someone Greek is needed to inform us.

Sleater-Kinney

pronounced 'sleeter' or 'slater'??

a mixture

say it valley-girl style

and no-one'll be able to tell the difference.

Slay-ter

But I feel like I'm betraying the english language to say anything other than slee-ter.

It took me a few readings of 'Curlupanddie' within this thread

to realise it is actually made up of real words.

it took you pointing it out

for me to realise.

^this

metoo

:'(

OH

I seeeee

hahaa

yep. thanks

i only just realised this now too

i couldn't see what was wring with saying Curlew-pandy

:(((

wring?

WRONG

It took me Shucks' hairdresser-core commment.

But I think theetersecrimp is entirely vindicated here. If they're gonna choose a stupid name with no spaces then they sould expect people to get it wrong.

Curlew-Pandy's a way better name too!

Merzbow

Do you say the 'bow' bit like as in 'bow and arrow' or as in 'take a bow'?

Also, the Merz bit is pronounced 'Merts' innit?

I think it's Mertz Bau

Like the sculpture by Kurt Schwitters.

the grammar of this thread title really annoys me

sorry, it's a pet hate...

anyway, I always enjoyed the way that French people pronounce Siouxsie as Suuk-sea

less impressed with (mainly Scandinavians) pronouncing Placebo as Place-bo

I pronounce

Menomena as 'Meno-Meena'. Even though I've now realised my mistake, it still feels better than saying the muppet ridded menomena.

i do this too!

then i found out about the muppet reference...

My old band was called Mesemenie

Any guesses on how that was pronounced? I think in the whole 2 years we were together, 1 person got it right first time.

meh-seh-meen-ee

?

metz-eh-men-ay?

bish bash bosh

Not bad attempts at all.

Chuff was the closest.

Mess-em-en-ee.

No wonder we didn't get anywhere.

I used to pronounce Placebo

as Plaice-bow.

heh

everyone knows it's Plak-e-bow!

No...Durrr!

It's spanish...'Pla-che-bo'

Correct me if I'm wrong

but I think it was an old, old wooded ship. Used during the civil war era.

Fugazi

Foo-gah-zee or Foo-gay-zee?

Friendships have been lost over this one.

gah/gar

for sure

\\\\\\\

its an acronym so doesnt really matter..its GI for "F**ked Up Got Ambushed Zipped In"

im such a geek. and Ian MacKaye is pronounced "muh kay"...mmmkay?

really?

obviously not big enough fans to watch their dvd though and hear them saying it ;-)

I never quite know

How to pronounce Guy Picciotto's name correctly...

gee

pitch-o-toe

\\\\\\\

what d'you mean?

well if you'd seen it

you'd hear about 50 people pronouncing it.

\\\\

thats pretty much like saying if you called a band "aluminium" then you couldnt insist that americans pronounced it properly. americans are more inclined to say "fuh gay zi" (as in donnie brasco) but as an acronym its open to interpretation.

like the difference between calling nirvana "near-vah-nah" or "nuh-va-na".

oooh, look how pedantic we are! if thats what they say themselves then it must be right.

personally i say "foo-ga-zi" and if anyone i meet is inclined to pull me up on it i will spit in their chips.

Aluminium

When it was discovered it was named aluminum (as the Americans pronounce it), we (the Brits) then changed its name to fit in with all the other elements that ended in 'ium', so you could argue that the yanks are saying it correctly! I wouldn't of course.

when you say 'gah'

do you mean like 'gar', or 'ga'?

I can see why

if it's pretaining to the latter spelling

I've heard people get

Xiu Xiu wrong lots. One that I've never said out loud is "Maher Shalal Hash Baz". I'd mess that up for sure.

Would it be

May-Er Shall Al Hazh Baz?

shoo shoo?

i would guess :S

yup

^^ That's what I'd have said

zou zou not shoo shoo.

Why would it be obviously 'sh'?

It's not "obvious"

but that's how it's pronounced in Chinese. Which is where the name's from:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiu_Xiu:_The_Sent_Down_Girl

I wonder about

David Thomas Broughton

I say Brow-ton... could be bro-ton, or even brof-ton..
