Favourite Dinosaur Jr album

I met a guy the other day who hasn't heard anything pre-Where You Been, but still loves them. Most people don't seem all that aware of those first three albums.

Just wondered what everyone's favourite is?

I have to admit I find it hard to imagine that anyone thinks it's anything other than You're Living All Over Me, so I'm not going to bother making an argument for it.

YLAOM will definitely be the popular choice..........

I shall now spark uproar and general disaproval by stating that I prefer Without a Sound.

Yes, really.

Wow

I haven't even heard that one yet. Is it really more than just Feel the Pain?

DiSapproval

I love it.

It was my introduction to the band so it may well be to do with that. I love that album and can't work out why so many seem to dislike it.

i had a massive argument on a thread like this before

for suggesting anyone who said anything other than You're Living All Over Me was completely wrong in the head. So I definitely won't reiterate that opinion, or say that it is twice as good as any of the other albums.

YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME FTW!

i'm liking your threads, considering weezer and dinosaur jr are my top two bands of ALL TIME. i guess they spin a similar sort of pop rocking game.
anyway, 'you're living all over me' is another perfect pop-rock record. but also pwns thousands of other records for it's straight up, blistering ROCK.
just an astonishingly fantastic album all round.

Ha ha, thanks

Most of what I like probably fits into 'college rock' at the moment.

I might have to give Without a Sound a try, then. I assumed if stuff wasn't amogst the recent(ish) batch of reissues, it probably wasn;t worth a look.

If most are agreed on You're Living All Over Me... then can er all agree on The Lung as best song? Nothing makes me happier than that song.

And also

the cow T-shirt for best piece of merchandise?

Especially in The Year Punk Broke

where at one point everyone seems to be wearing those T-shirts.

haha it so is!

one of the best band t-shirts i've seen, anyway.

i like the j/lou/murph stuff, most. 'beyond' totally rocked too. i bought 'green mind' - the first post-lou album - but, to be honest, i found it really hard to get into, which i've chalked down to the lack of lou...i agree with 'without a sound' though, that's a really fantastic album. and had one of their biggest hits on it in 'feel the pain'.

as for best song, my vote goes to 'kracked', but that's just a massively personal opinion...

also

the recent reissues are mainly the three j/lou/murph albums, because, y'know, they're back and better than ever, etc.

the post-lou albums

tend to be a mixture of rubbish stuff and incredible stuff. 'green mind' may not be an incredible overall album BUT it has The Wagon, which is A++++ AWESOMEYJNENSNNSS.

'kracked' - yes!

Their best song

I've got that cow t-shirt in purple

...it's slightly too small, I may flog it on DiS.

the first seven songs on YLAOM

are all 10/10 genius. I couldn't pick a favourite from them. Though if pushed i'd say Raisans.

I couldn't pick a favourite...said dan

No way, how can you distinguish between 10/10?

Not happening

It's Raisans

Green Mind

because it's the only one i've got

thats like only having

that rap song the beach boys did in the 80's.

Does have The Wagon on it though

which is one of their best songs.

I'm inevitably going for YLAOM because it's genius.

Beyond is excellent as well - I've gone beyond the fanboy excitement I had when it came out and genuinely think it's brilliant.

^ This

Except with Where You Been.

It was cheap.

Is the reissue of YLAOM worth getting?

I've got the original CD and it sounds terrible and makes me never want to listen to it.

When i want to listen to something Mascis-related i usually end up pulling out More Light.

Has anyone else got the Take A Run At The Sun EP? J does his best Beach Boys impression, it's fantastic.

Where You Been

for sheer crushing rock power. And tunes. As soon as he kicked that four-eyed wimp out the band, Mascis was finally able to turn up the good and turn down the suck. YLAOM still has some fucking great tunes, mind.

yes

it still sounds like it was recorded in a shed, but the mix is great and - i've heard - a massive improvement over the old SST one.

The original CD??????

Are you sure?

From 1987?

Hmmm

I've said it before & I'll say it again

Out of every single album, my favourite is Green Mind :)

YLAOM...

come on - it's You're Living All Over Me. It's not just the 'best' Dinosaur Jr albums it's one of the best guitar/rock albums of all time.
It's worth owning the vinyl, the re-issue and the 8 track if you can find it.
Not to say that Bug (even though band seem to hate it) isn't brilliant - it is. Dinosaur 'Dinosaur' is a great debut - but they seem to make such a stylictic leap between that and YLAOM. Green Mind is transitional and seems to suffer from post original line up break up - but Where You Been is a great 'rock' album. Mascis can do no wrong in my book. People whine about the production on YLAOM but that's one of it's strengths. When the guitars kick in on The Lung it's like being punched in the face. It's a masterpiece of an album. It mystifies me that people who like Dinosaur Jr have not heard / don't own the 1st three albums.

this post is exactly the truth

did i write this myself in my sleep?

this^

I think its their best release. Every song is pure melodic fuzzy goodness. (and its got the wagon on)

HEY! I LIVE FOR THAT LOOK!

HEY! IS THAT ALL IT TOOK??

'You're Living All Over Me'

...and 'Where You Been'.

Also, I really like the best of 'Ear Bleeding Country' and generally I'm not a fan of listening to Best Ofs.

I know why, I know why hey, its all on your head hey, is that what you said?

im going to listne to green mind...oh shit i can't, im at work

How'd You Pin That One On Me

has the best guitar solo ever...

.

Stare it in the face or duck it, Get me a bucket... SSSNNNAAARRRLLLDHFSKDUFWDFLKEFNDFUENFHDJDIGFNMGSPCDJF NFHDTCYUVNGNSHSJFSDLKFEMVDKLJSDFHIREFDKFJDYKLWFLDHKJSLDKGE,KJCDHKLWIDFIUDSFJKHDGNHDSFD

im bunking off work

and going home to learn how to play it

I think you just jump up & down on the guitar

And maybe kick it a bit.

now thats a solo i can learn

although by its very definition, will ultimately be the last on the said guitar aswell

Ear-Bleeding Country

Bite me.

My vinyl copy of 'Dinosaur' is one of my most treasured possessions.

I bought it when I was 16. 'Forget the swan' is still stunning even now. But... yeah YLAOM is still the best album they ever did (sorry to be predictable).

Which album was the one with 'Alone' on? Y'know where J just sings 'ALONEEEEE' over and over whilst soloing like his very life depends on it. For eight minutes. Gonna have to dig that one out again.

That'd be Hand It Over

Which also has I'm Insane on it, some nice trumpet action on that one.

The first seven tracks on You're Living All Over Me

are basically better than most things, Dinosaur Jr-related or otherwise.

well then.....

Bug
YLAOM
dinosaur
green mind

then it goes a little tat, as it becomes a mascis noodle-fest, no quality control so to speak!!

Bug incredibly loud is still one of the finest rock records ever. very closely followed by YLAOM - Raisans is fantastic

Where you been? is a classic

I can't believe how little love people have for it here? I guess it depends on whether you're into Neil Young or not but the album is wonderful. Yes the solos are a bit long at times (not a problem for me) but the songwriting far exceeds anything from the Barlow era.

YLAOM is still my favourite but I would recommend anyone starting out with Dinosaur Jr to get that and Where You Been.

good point...

...about neil young. i have always treated dino jr as being neil youngs noisey cousin!!

where you been has got 'get me' ? no?

that is a marvellous song and absolutely wicked solo too.

Ooh lets not forget 'Out There'

Which is surely the best late period Dinosaur song?

Being based on the death of his father Mascis was for once actually singing ABOUT SOMETHING rather than just adding drivel lyrics at the last minute. I think that Dinosaur Jr would have actually been a better band if Mascis had stuck to the guitar (and drums) and got in another singer / lyricist. Imagine Dinosaur Jr fronted by... I don't know... Mike Patton? Or... suggest some others

Mascis is a great singer

Well not 'great' but you know what I mean. Imagining Dino Jr without Mascis would be like Pavement without Malkmus or Neutral Milk Hotel without whatshisname. Crap singers but they make the music what it is.

Get Me is probably my favourite song of theirs come to think of it.

yeah i agree ^

mascis is what makes dinosaur jr what they are. i dont care if its barely audible montone warbling about nonsensical shite, he sounds damn good

But the difference is...

Malkmus and Mangum (for such is his name) are (to varying degrees) excellent lyricists. I am sure that Mascis has admitted several times to not giving a shit about writing words and simply being interested in the art of the solo.

all dinosaur jr songs are 'about something'

mostly crippling social anxiety or girls, the stuff of all good indie

you're living all over me

green mind
where you been
bug
hand it over
more light (nearly dinosaur jr)
dinosaur
free so free ("")
without a sound

I've probably listen to more dinosaur jr in my life than all other bands combined

no beyond

on your list?

just d/led 'you're living all over me'

first thoughts; amusement parks really ripped off 'little fury things'

Absolutely.

I couldn't believe it when I first heard that amusement parks song. And I've refused to listen to them since.

Where you been is the best.

Sorry, but

Where you Been?

Is my favourite. Sorry.

I like

Green mind.

i still

prefer Bug...

ylaom is my fave...

but I can't live without Bug. Just... can't!

Big love for the Bug

Lou Barlow ended up coughing blood to give us his vocals on Dont. A friend of mine gave up listening to heavy metal on the basis of that song, because he thought that Barlow's vocal performance on that track crushed all metal vocalists into the dust for potency and intensity. This coming from a bloke who listened to nothing but Slayer, Metallica, Napalm Death etc.

Where you been

isn't getting the love it deserves in this thread. I still consider it their best work (ith the best drumming ever). Some of the guitar solos are alright, too.

He isn't a bad player, that Mascis lad.

prolly

you're living or bug or the debut.

they're playing koko in may, by the way.
