I have the usual stuff covered so I'm looking for anything that's not so well known - hidden gems I guess.

'i have the usual stuff'

you're not really narrowing it down. The Slits?

Got them

I'm looking more for new and current stuff, kinda like Scanners etc.

Oh, you know

I have the usual female stuff. The usual 5 females that make music that people buy, y'know.

Audrey

And also; why?

I'm starting a clubnight

that focuses primarily on female talent but I don't wanna play all the usual stuff.

What do you mean by 'the usual stuff'?

I know lots of female bands/artists, but they're all very different to each other...give us some more clues please?!

Annette Peacock

Kristen Hersh

Ooh

If you like Ani Difranco, try out Wallis Bird. She's wonderful.

Also, Cathy Davey :)

Try...

Ill Ease... she's pretty cool. She plays all the different instruments herself and uses loops to create the piece. Worth a listen!

Piper

Laura Imbruglia

Can't recommend her enough, her debut album is one of the best I've heard in the past few years.

Little Fish

Swimming out of Oxford

Sarah Blasko

Is great. Check out her album "What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have" in particular.

go listen to...

Orion Rigel Dommisse !

Marnie Stern

'In advance of the broken arm' is on at work now and doing well - http://drownedinsound.com/bands/10537

^this is correct.

SHE IZ AWSUM.

^this is false

She is as tight as an old lady's twat.

Anais Mitchell

'Hymns for the Exiled.' And 'The Song they sang when Rome fell,' if you can find it.
Karen Dalton, Judee Sill...

Linda Perhacs

Sandy Denny
Anne Briggs
go folk!

MIRAH

her records are good. particularly c'mon miracle, altho advisory committe is ace.
you prob have it tho

Carina Round

get "The Disconnection" her new stuff is a bit poppy and shiny, but "The Disconnection" is raw and amazing.

Couldn't agree more

Was more than a little disappointed with Slow Motion Addict.

Judee Sill.

Her album 'Heart Food' is one of my favourites ever.

Ah you have it already..

I didn't count her as "all the usual stuff" but ^5 for "The Disconnection"

I was gonna buy "slow motion addict" on iTunes the other day...it's not even fucking there! Interscope have really fucked things up for her.

Whoa! Just checked her myspace and it says "Type of label: None"

has she been dropped? ...that's the best thing that could happen to her IMO

Indeed

I'm wondering if the LA lifestyle is also affecting her work. Just a thought!

I honestly feel

that the label filled her head with ideas of pop-indie crossover and mega stardom. Combined with the LA lifestyle (hanging out in The Viper Rooms with Hollywood A-list) it has just sucked all the raw beauty and creativity out of her.

was gonna post this^

i haven't got around to buying any of her stuff though, seen her live a couple of times and was well impressed.

I remember seeing Carina Round

at the Komedia back in approx 2001, on the Roadworks tour, supporting Ben & Jason. I only have 'The First Blood Mystery' though, which I have barely given a chance. I get the feeling 'The Disconnection' would be very different?

Not very different

A little more honed and confident IMO. Definitely worth checking out.

Nina Nastasia

Laura Veirs
Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia
Howling Bells
Kristen Hersh
Tanya Donelly

"Female"

is not a genre.

Well observed

I don't think anyone in this thread has actually said otherwise.

well

"Recommend me female artists for a clubnight" is a pretty broad request.

.

"I'm starting a clubnight
that focuses primarily on female talent"

But lets not get bogged down with all that.

That's how it was intended

It was a simple enough request I don't see why you're being so hostile about it.

Didn't Q do that last month?

'How to buy female!' or some shite like that?

I don't remember

ever referring to it as a genre.

All I'm saying

is asking people to recommend you female artists without giving any idea about the genre of music required has obviously confused quite a few people here.

Which I now see

I didn't want to limit people's repsonses by defining genres, I should have said this and avoided any confusion. My apologies.

don't aplogise

he was being a bit of a cock tbh

Did someone say Sleater Kinney?

I'm saying them if not.

Also Lush, but don't bother with Lovelife as that's britpoppy and fey and a little weak.

Get 'Split'.

mmm

slant 6

I'll second Sleater Kinney

and I'll put forward Fiery Furnaces.

For S-K I'd go for 'One Beat' or anything from Hot Rock onwards. Fiery Furnaces - 'Gallowbird's Bark' or 'Blueberry Boat'. Wouldn't bother with 'Rehearsing my Choir'.

sleater-kinney

sleater-kinney, oh god SLEATER-KINNEY! massive shame they spilt up.
but yeah you could do infinitely worse than checking out 'the hot rock', 'all hands on the bad one' or 'the woods'. infact all of their albums have something to recommend them.
i'd also venture long blondes, since they've got some new stuff coming out soon.

life without buildings get alot of good press on here

and rightly so, their album any other city is outstanding

I love LWB

save for the crap vocals

Kleenex

(later known as LiLiPUT) are essential listening. One of the best punk bands of all time. Certainly the best band to come out of Switzerland.

Ahem...

are you forgetting Celtic Frost??!!

Thrash Metal

isnt really my genre, sorry.

has anyone said HOLE?

hehe

recent modular signing, Ladyhawke

tis a well good night. i wish you well

Thanks

Much appreciated :)

A female bands night in Manchester, eh?

Did you ever used to Killing Fantasy? It made me so sad when it folded.

I went once

It was a really good night, we need more of 'em IMO.

And Kenickie

P-U-N-K-A

And Sleeper!

Hurrah!

Sleater-Kinney

Excuse 17
Heavens To Betsy
Nico
Joanna Newsin
The Blow
and Huggy Bear, if they count. BASICALLY, if you just pick any riot grrrl band it'd be cool.

Newsom*

Best thing i've heard in ages.

the piney gir...

Slow Down Tallahassee

www.myspace.com/slowdowntallahasseegirls
or
www.myspace.com/tallahasseegirls

(can't check myspace at work to confirm which one it is)

Looking at your list

you'd probably enjoy Forget Cassettes
http://www.myspace.com/forgetcassettes

..

Maria McKee / Lone Justice

I love Maria.

M.I.A.

definitely, superb

Indeed

One of my favourtite artists of the last few years.

Lonelady

http://www.myspace.com/hiholonelady

Still Corners
http://www.myspace.com/stillcorners

Very different but both worth checking out.

Curved Air

First two albums. A scandalously overlooked English prog-pop-rock-folk band from early 70s. They have a female singer if that counts. Their first two albums are absolutely amazing.

High five

"Second Album" = awesomeness.

Jill Cunniff

from Luscious Jackson is good I think. Ida Maria also...

not

sure if anyone's said this yet but Ida Maria are/is great.

Biased opinion

At the risk of getting shot down in flames for blameless self promotion, if you like my stuff, get in touch! ..

www.50ftwoman.com

Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton

From metric, her debut solo album Knives Don't Have Your Back is a little stunner I think..

REGINA!?

.

i would guess she was "the usual stuff" but didn't see her mentioned anywhere so...

She is 'the usual stuff'

but I'm not a huge fan :S My friend, who's an avid fan, has made me aware that this is a huge downfall on my behalf!

Metric

Eisley, arrah and the ferns, au revoir simone, blonde redheads, mates of state, pj harvey, tegan and sara, tilly and the wall, and the yeah yeah yeahs!

KT Tunstall

Adele
Dido
B*Witched
Appleton
Hepburn
Kelly Osbourne
Michelle McManus
Tricia Penrose

Harry Crews

Now defunct, but a good racket made by Kim Gordon, Lydia Lunch and some pro wrestler.

land of talk
