What we know so far: Alex Turner and Miles Kane, frontmen with Arctic Monkeys and The Rascals respectively, will release an album this spring. Recorded in France, The Age of the Understatement was produced by James Ford and features strings arrangements from Final Fantasy man Owen Pallett. The news, (thanks, boards) – Turner and Kane have uploaded the video to what appears to be the album’s opening title track onto their website, here.

Scared by widescreen? YouTube footage below.

Video: The Last Shadow Puppets - 'The Age of the Understatement'

The core duo have spoken of their admiration for the grandiose work of artists like Scott Walker and David Bowie, and the track featured on their site undoubtedly shares that, at least, riding in on a grand phalanx of rhythm and strings that gallop not unlike they did in Muse’s ‘Knights of Cydonia’.

Screengrabs below, video – again - here.

im not sure what i think of it

to be honest. its like a james bond theme. i don't see how having two singers helps at all because they are basically singing the same part.
very odd.

bond.

would be thought of, what with the russian army tanks, 70s video quality etc etc.

but...tis quite a tune :)
.

really really cool!

reminds me of jackie by jacques brel

Sounds Like

John Barry producing a long lost La's album. I like it a lot.

Much better than the other stuff these two come up with.

I Like It!

It's surprisingly different from what I expected it to be.

some bits

sound a lot like knights of cydonia

alex turner, you bastard

i've always wanted to make grandiose, epic orchestral pop (but better than this, though it's quite good).

where's my fucking orchestra?

i think they should have gone with the "original", unimaginative, name for the band - 'turner & kane'. it would be more in keeping with '60s inflected music/video. that first clip of them singing by the tanks is utter cheese.

it sounds like the divine comedy.

maybe because they both (neil hannon & alex turner) stealing chords from the walker brothers.

i thought coral with ambition

...i hate the arctic monkeys, tho thought i d like this... a little bit stale and too over blown i think...

I like it.

I like their coats.

It's ok

but all very self-conscious and contrived sounding. And sacrilege to suggest it even comes close to Brel.

Why?

Isn't that great to be honest...

Ken Russell's work?

Good tune, but the video looks dangerously like the video to Elton John's song 'Nikita'.
