OK, so, you're all alone on a palm tree raft somewhere in the Pacific, and, for reasons unknown, you got the entire Ninja Tune back catalogue stored in crates on your raft. Only problem is: You're surrounded by hungry sharks AND your raft is about to go down! You have to get rid of all the records, apart from ONE. That's right, you can keep ONE Ninja Tune record (that you can later play on your ultra lightweight battery driven portable turntable with built in speakers), and still have a (barely) floating raft. SO: What record do YOU keep and why??
DJ Food & DK
Solid Steel. The first one. That mix thingy with loadsa stuff on it, I'm still not board of that beauty. It takes you through all the moods from party time, freaky soundscapes and chilled out. I can't think of any more off the top of my head mind, there are some beauties on Nija Tunes.
Or
Journeys by DJ - 70 minutes of madness By Coldcut. Cos well its awsome
The Herbaliser - Something Wicked...
Just cos I like it. Any other reasoning seems ludicrous...
^ this
i remember i was really excited when i heard that the herbaliser were putting out a follow-up to 've
but to me, 'something wicked' is a tad... average... not a bad record, quite a bit hip-hopy, but it didn't take me by storm the same way 'very mercenary' did.
there are some gems on ninja tune, but for some reason i stopped being VERY interested four or five years ago. dunno, maybe it was the trip-hop backlash or something, both ninja tune and e.g. warp records, both very prolific and trendsetting labels during the late 90s, sort of lost some momentum during the early 2000s. for me, there were a bunch of records that didn't really live up to my expectations (drukqs, geogaddi, out from out where, empty the bones of you, ultravisitor etc etc)...
from mid-90s to late 90s, there are some really awesome ninja tune records that still manage to sound fresh today. amon tobin's first three records, kid koala's 'carpal tunnel syndrome', mr. scruff's 'keep it unreal', dj vadim, dj food's 'kaleidoscope'...
if i had to go with only ONE ninja tune record, i think it would have to be dj food's 'kaleidoscope'. it's brilliant!
Amon Tobin - Permutation
because it's fookin' brilliant.
Jaga Jazzist - The Stix
It's good innit.
can we play this again with something I'm an expert on please?
Good game though!!!
the cinematic orchestra
man with a movie camera.... jazzgasmic.
(that was on ninja tunes right)
yah, that's a gud 'un!
cinematic orchestra is great.
Badthread
