Best riff ever?

My nomination

TV Eye - The Stooges

I just can't stop playing this song at the moment. The guitar work is just absolutely incredible. So chunky, such great feel, so sharp. That Asheton boy is something else.

Your nomination?

the one that goes

Duuhhhhh
da na naaaaa Da DA Daaaaaaaa
pe de be dummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

No One Knows has to be a strong contender

I'd also argue that Paranoid by Black Sabbath is in actuality, one of the greatest riffs ever.

Paranoid?

Naw!

Iron Man! (Despite having some of the worst lyrics ever written)

I know its their best known song

but seriously, Paranoid is rifftacular. Iron Man is good, but it's not in the same league.

your mum.

x

marquee moon

i guess

justified and ancient - klf

eat the rich - aerosmith
kandy pop - bis
the truth - clawfinger

Back In Black

To Hell With Good Intentions- Mclusky

DURR DURR WEEDLEY WEEDLE WEEDLEY WEEEEDLE

so many, but riffs that literally made me jizz when i first heard them as young boy

cowboys from hell, welcome to the jungle and rocket queen. in fact they still float my boat to this day

jonny marr

surely anything by him...he's got to be featured on this thread right?

Literally?

That must have been awkward in public!

got to be

the hollyoaks theme tune.

one of the most instantly recognisable riffs ever written really. well maybe if your a student and watch every episode 5 times a week on the various repeats

Radiohead - Electioneering

Absolute perfection.

I agree though- TV Eye is AMAZING. Iggy should never have switched him to bass.

How about

Sunshine of Your Love?

LED ZEP - IMMIGRANT SONG

Aint it.

Cooper Temple Clause

music box - that bit halfway through where it goes quiet then kicks in. Either that or Citizen Erased by Muse

promises, promises

Music box is immense but promises, promises has an amazing riff. that's the song that got me into them as well

^One of their best^

And they have SHIT-LOADS of great riffs.

I'm going for Vaccination by Helmet.

There are some rather mediocre riffs being peddled on this thread.

Slipknot - Duality

I'm no metaller but even I know that is one fine riff. Especially the bit that goes 'woooooeeeeeeeh' halfway through

idlewild-a modern way of letting go

obviously not the best riff ever.thats stockholm syndrome :) muses not blink 182

oh man..

the drums in that song.

The breakdown is SICK in that song.

It is so good

and easy to play too. Plug In Baby is up there too.

Another vote for New Born

that riff is amazing.

gotta be up there

eddie van halen on *ahem* beat it michael jackson

^no need for ahem

that riff is amazing

except

it's Steve Lukather. Eddie "only" plays the solo...

Jesus of Nazzariff

Jesus of Nazzariff

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

or

'The Last Time' by the Rolling Stones. Or 'Satisfaction'. Or 'Sister Ray' by the Velvet Underground. Or 'Louie Louie'. Fuck, I don't know.

Moby Dick - Led Zep

every best riff ever was by The Zep.

ooh, ooh, 'Black Dog'!

that's the one. I learned to play the guitar just to learn how to play that.

THE OCEAN!!!

better than Moby maybe...

Shit

i was just abotu to post that. The ocean has an immense riff.

or Bring it on Home..

FUCKING ZZZZZZZEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!

Impossible to answer this

I'm a riff man, so I could go on for years. A few of my faves:

Pantera - 'Walk'
Sabbath - 'War Pigs' or 'Hole in the Sky'
Down - 'Stone the Crows'
Nailbomb - 'Cockroaches'
Faith No More - 'Crab Song'
Led Zep - 'Immigrant Song'
AC/DC: 'Back in Black'
Metallica: 'Sad But True'
Corrosion of Conformity: 'Vote With a Bullet'
Helmet: 'Biscuits for Smut'
Korn: 'Blind'
Machine Head: 'Davidian'
The Kinks: 'Really Got Me'
Kyuss: 'Daemon Cleaner' or 'Thumb'
Audioslave: 'Cochise' (and I'll fight anyone who questions this)
Deep Purple: 'Smoke On the Water'
Soundgarden: 'Jesus Christ Pose'

... I have to stop now

The Nazz

I can't remember the name of the song though??? anyone?

Re: The Nazz

Open My Eyes?

Although I think it's a direct rip-off of a Who song.

il fight you on audioslave

because the riff from cochise is nicked directly and i mean DIRECTLY from im broken by pantera.
seriously go listen to it

Right *gives weak girly slap on the chest*

Hadn't considered this, but you're not quite correct:

Now I think of it, the first half of the chorus riff IS identical to the first half of the chorus riff from 'I'm Broken', but I'm only talking about the intro/verse riff of 'Cochise'. The chorus riff is pants in comparison.

Take that, you knave.

^ YOU'VE BEEN BURNED BY MY LIIIIIGHT-ER, AND MY LIGHTER IS HELD DOWN BY MY THUUUUUMB

That song makes me grin with pure joy.

Also Kudos for the Helmet and Audioslave. That first Audioslave album is rifftacular.

Airbag!

or the National Anthem (radiohead one, not the english...)

Current Favourite is

Dusty Nothing by Dead Meadow

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

it must be at least 25 years old, possibly 30 (i'm not too up on my sabbath discography) but it is THE single most heavy sequence of notes in existence.

current favourite:

polvo - feather of forgiveness

all-time: black dog - led zep

foxy

lady

jimi H

and i think the ocean is my fave led zep riff.

other than that though... black night by deep purple?

sweet leaf perhaps

mastodon-seabeast
the first track on Dead Meadows first album
minus-frat rock

Got 3

The Kills - Kissy Kissy

Black Sabbath - Supernaut

The Stooges - Down on the Street

But almost any of the Stooges ones could make it on there really.

Cicatriz ESP by Mars Volta gets my vote...

Especially when it kicks back in after the 5 minute 3 guitar duel solo...one of favourtie moments ever in a song.

actually i was wrong

its "this is now" by hatebreed.

Zero....

...a monster

Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz

...i saw it on Rustie Lee's 'hot and saucy men' on VH-1 the other day

pil poptones

splitting in two,alternative tv

The Passenger

Iggy Pop (wrote and played by Ricky Gardiner)

simple and repetitive, just like me.

*written

Rebel Rebel

by Bowie

Billy Duffy is the underrated king of riffs

for me it's got to be L'll Devil, Wild Hearted Son or Sun King.

Hell Is For Heroes - I Can Climb Mountains

Muse - Citizen Erased
Oceansize - One Out Of nONE
The end of I Am Connecting Flight by yourcodenameis:milo
The Fall Of Troy - Laces Out Dan!

AM I EVIL??

and Raining Blood, of course.

im no great fan of muse

but they have an absolute shitload

.

BOTCH

the quiet bit

in "when good dogs do bad things" my the dillinger escape plan and mike patton.
