This is really a thread about George Pringle.
It's not really. Cohen is getting more and more Dis press these days but I've completely ignored his music. There's a pretty hefty back catalogue to check out so give me three albums to start with please.

No
Do it yourself.
you are such a character
:D
Shut it Grandad
i think you're mostly getting something very good
with leonard cohen.
start with
songs from a room
songs of lave and hate
new skin for old ceremony.
and pick up a book of his poems whilst you're at it, the man's a genius.
This is one of the few
I can think of where the greatest hits is so fucking good it's the only real place to start

Otherwise, Songs of Love and Hate, Songs of Leonard Cohen and Songs from his room. Which perhaps uncoincidentally were his first three.
*A room
start at the beginning.
in my opinion the first four albums (songs of leonard cohen, songs from a room, songs of love and hate, old skin for the new ceremony) are the best. or you could just get his first 'greatest hits' comp, which has a pretty good selection of the early stuff. after that, things start taking a turn for the keyboard.
Actually, Chelsea Hotel
is on old skin isn't it? That makes it essential too.
Thanks everyone
Pretty much confirmed what I was thinking, start at the beginning.
Fairdos
He was great in Rising Damp though wasn't he.
I loved Songs of Love and Hate
so then bought Songs from a Room and liked it. But one day I noticed irritating ruler twanging on every song and now cannot listen to it.
Still love Love and Hate though. Nice story.
yeh
that's called a Jew's Harp, you fucking anti-Semite.
I knew I was bound to be making a massive faux pas..
But the statement is still valid. It is fucking annoying. I just hope I haven't ruined anyones listening pleasure. No? Thought not.
The best of is actually really, really great
i thiunk there are a few floating about so make sure you get the one where the front cover is him looking in a mirror
this^ is actually where i started
and it's pretty good for his earlier work.
and he writes about each song in the liner notes which is nice.
