i guess les savy fav? i don't remember what else i saw there except bloc party and patrick wolf, which were only ok. i'm sure i've been there about ten times though.
Feeder - I went because My Vitriol were supposed to be supporting but we got Mark B and Blade instead, still Ash did a private instore at Virgin when it finished.
The Bravery and Hard-Fi all three up with the worst gigs I've ever been to.
Burn it down tomorrow I say.
Feeder were awful that night. Can kinda understand the reception that Mark B and Blade got since they weren't expected, but thought they were actually pretty good. Dealt with the worst of the hecklers pretty well too.
supported by The Strokes, Rocket from the crypt and Peaches in 2001 - At The Drive-In played there the night before but that was ruined by twats in the crowd and the band looked SO tired.
Mogwai in 2003
Elastica in 2000 (only time I saw them :()
Peaches in 2004
I saw the Trail of Dead one the following year too, with British Sea Power, The Faint, and Clinic. Wasn't quite as good though.
My other favourite Astoria gig was seeing a Beta Band live Japanese broadcase at 1 in the afternoon. I went with my dad and bought 'The Big Dig' by Billy Mahonia in Charing Cross Road afterwards. I think I was 15
at that Tomahawk gig. I was there but not within piss distance from the stage.
Other fine moments I've seen there:
Faith No More on the King For A Day tour (my first Astoria gig). No piss, but blood from when Patton smacked his head on the mic during Caffeine.
Ministry just before Paul Barker left the band. Gig did have a pissy element when AJ urinated on the US and Iraqi flags before throwing them into the crowd. Thankfully I was on the balcony.
Mr Bungle, with magician as support act.
Aphex Twin and DMX Krew - featuring Aphex Twin DJ set with him hiding at the side of the stage.
SFA/Mogwai/Arab Strap all on the same bill. The first band, Campag Velocet were shit though.
Saw as many good gigs downstairs at the LA2, but as neither venue rarely has anything as good these days I'm not overly sentimental about it closing.
They used to film gigs at 1pm on Saturday afternoons every week for Japanese TV and all you had to do was show up and they were completely free. Remember seeing Super Furry Animals, Brassy, Ash, Wannadies and Soulwax at those. Wannadies seemingly played every song they ever wrote because they were given something like 2 hours to fill!
supported by Forward Russia were pretty good. But for me it's got to be Bloc Party supported by The Rakes, because it was the first proper gig id been to.

there must be more but i can't remember. with all the talk of it closing there must be a tribute site out there somewhere that lists all of the gigs it's hosted?
I went to see ADF there and I was completely shocked by their audience there..I didn;t expect the err 'diversity' of their audience, which explained hte heckeling when they started to preach.
I had to see Atreyu for a gig review....I felt like a peodophile...horrible experience
This is an email I got back from Ken's office after I sent him an email calling him a bastard:
Dear Mr Earl,
The Astoria music venue has been identified as a location required for construction access of a Crossrail Station at Tottenham Court Road and is safeguarded as a 'surface interest' location in the Crossrail Bill currently going through parliament. For information regarding the current status of the Bill go to www.parliament.gov.uk.
No development proposals have come forward; however, the Mayor has stated that he would seek a replacement music venue of the same size within any redevelopment. The Bill is still being debated in both chambers of Parliament and until it receives Royal Assent the specifics of the Crossrail project are not known.
Any redevelopment is likely to be referable to the Mayor of London under the Town and Country Planning (Mayor of London) Order 2008. The Mayor will consider any planning application on its individual merits and until such time cannot comment any further.
The following websites have up to date information which you may find useful:
You bastard.
I have just heard that you have approved the demolition of the Astoria
to make way for an East/West London train station.
Buildings like the Astoria with decades of history simply cannot be
replaced by new venues. All that Londoners will get in return is a
boring, modern metal/glass, bland, soulless club.
This keeps happening with music venues in the capital and it's
extremely depressing.
You have lost my support of your position as Mayor.
From that reply, I couldn't work out what was happening with the Astoria. Sounds like closure might still be a long way off though.
The White Stripes were pretty good there, as were the Flaming Lips circa The Soft Bulletin. I was also at the Quasi + Hefner + Elliott Smith + Sebadoh someone else mentioned......Didn't Lou Barlow go a bit mental on stage?
uhhhh
i guess les savy fav? i don't remember what else i saw there except bloc party and patrick wolf, which were only ok. i'm sure i've been there about ten times though.
I've seen a string of pretty bad ones

Also
I went home instead of Ash's midnight signing. I got a mate who was staying to buy me a copy of the album and get it signed though.
They were ok, didn't they drag a
heckler up on stage and convert him to rap?
Yeah.
Was noticable that the crowd settled after that.

wow
that trail of dead gig sounds amazing.
it's been threatened
with closure for the past twenty years. IF it does close it won't be for another 5 years at least anyway. Hope is not lost.
LCD were pretty good there last year.
Oh aye
forgot that one - and Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2003 comes to mind too.
oh yes
the LCD show was very good.
It was
they threw the entire drum kit into the crowd at the end if I remember rightly.
haha
rock and roll! how long did they play for? i wish i saw trail of dead in 2001.
About 75 mins I guess
Is this where I brag about seeing them at the Barfly in 2000 and they pretty much played all of 'Madonna'? It is? Great.
I was there too

I was at that one

I've seen some great gigs at The Astoria
Tomahawk w/ Dalek - my first proper gig, and possibly one of the best. I got peed on by Patton!
Fantomas w/ Kid606 + Flat Earth Society - An unbelievably good gig, and one of the best gigs in terms of support acts.
Rollins Band/Black Flag
80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster/Winnebago Deal
Wasn't it a prosthetic...?

According to John Stanier it was pretty real. Not sure how reliable a source he is though.

Jan 1999:
Quasi + Hefner + Elliott Smith + Sebadoh

Bob Tilton + Clinic + Bonnie Prince Billy + Mogwai
I wanted to go to

Is that the Mean Fiddler
In that case, Electrelane / M83 / !!!, which is still the best gig I've ever been too, and I saw Springsteen that year.

jeff buckley in early 95, or maybe late 94. awesome anyway!
Bloodhound gang
