Is my favorite, don't know if it's the best. I love everything of their's that I have and I think I've got most everthing except the new live cd. I even love the stuff they did for Clockwork Orange and all the rare stuff I got during the heady Napster days.
You can't go wrong with the awesome triptych of "Autobahn", "Trans-Europe Express" and "The Man Machine".
Secondary to that are "Computer World" and "Radioactivity", and the original single "Tour-De-France". Really good, also, but less essential.
And perhaps for completists only, "Electric Cafe" and the recent "Tour De France Soundtracks".
And then if you wanted a bridge between their early early experimental rock stuff and their later electronic style, get "Ralf & Florian". It's got some really pretty Krautrock / 70s tracks on it.
The Man Machine an Trans Europe Express. As a starting point TMM is probably better, but overall i prefer TEE, though theres really not much in it. TMM is more rounded pop songs but TEE is more definative Kraftwerk sound. either way, theyre brilliant, you need them in your life!
As many have said (and its all a matter of personal taste) I would recommend listening to Ralf and Florian (pre Kraftwerk really) to see how far ahead they were at the time, Autobahn- the album that made them famous and Computer World, an album that still has a big influence on many.(Clockwork Orange soundtrack was Wendy Carlos btw but Kraftwerk used to use it as intro music at live concerts).
...Autobahn, Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express & Man Machine. Listen to them in order and hear how they evolved. The stuff before and after is OK but these four were made at the peak of their powers imho.
I only have Autobahn
and the title track is one of the finest peces of music I own!
it certainly has some good elements
but the flutes and non-vocodered voices detract from it a bit i think, it seems too nice and not "kraftwerk" enough :(
The Man Machine

It was...
Wendy Carlos who did the soundtrack to Clockwork Orange, not Kraftwerk. Apparently it's been mislabeled on a bootleg CD somewhere.
I like Trans-Europe Express
the best.
Well...

I hope this helps.
I'd agree with this...
Minimum Maximum (the live album) gives a pretty good overview.
I'd also recommend this http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2806841#r2808113
It's interesting to hear where they came from...
its between

spelling 'and' wrong
nice one tsb
Kraftwerk

I think the Holy Trinity of Kraftwerk albums is:
Trans Europe Express
The Man Machine
Computer Age
Anyone else thinks Minimum-Maximum deserves a mention here? I find it a really satisfying listen
Whoops Computer World
was listening to Trans by Neil Young yesterday, must have had an effect on me
I was listening to Trans on my way to work today...
I'd agree about Minimum Maximum. Did you see them on the 2004 tour? I saw them in Barcelona. Probably the best gig I've ever been to.
Gotta be.....

The Man Machine
Though is it wrong to really like the Tour De France Soundtracks?
Fuck no!
There's some brilliant stuff on there. Elektro Kardiogramm, Vitamin and AƩro Dynamik are fucking amazing.
I quite like...
The Esthetik Of Destruction.... Oh, my bad. That's Kling Klang isn't it.... That is sooooooo (not) confusing.
