'Heavy' Music with actual singing

Does this exist?

Not that i have anything in particular against shouty/screamed vocals - they generally naturally fit more agressive music - i've just always wondered what someone who could actually sing could bring to 'heavier' band.

Example: Guy Garvey fronting Converge

Would this work or just be absolutely awful?

FoTB live gets pretty noisy

And I always sing.

...

you get some metal / hardcore with a guy doing the usual screamy stuff in the background and a female singing normally. Can sound really good.

From Autumn To Ashes do it a bit, I'm sure there are loads more...it's not really my field.

evanescence!

Beat me to it!

I was trying to work out the spelling.

Protest the Hero

are awesome! Check out the vagrant records website for some mp3s as evidence

i think Maynard James Keenan

fronting A Perfect Circle works pretty well

and Skin from Skunk Anansie was/is an amazing vocalist

Yes

to A Perfect Circle. I'm going to go and listen to Thirteenth Step. Right. Now.

buh?

Opeth.

Rawk.

Opeth DEFINITELY!

Akcerfeld has two great voices he uses for "actual singing".

Wu from This Et Al

that works.

queens of the stone age:

frequently heavy as an anvil, but josh maintains his frankyl beautiful singing voice. and don't forget about lanegan.

*frankly

See this is what i thought also

but is there any others who do it as well?

* are

grrr

the guy from devil sold his soul

has an amzing singing voice when he uses it.. obviously there is lots of screaming too. does that count?

um

nearly every metal band ever?

what?

like? what?

Iron Maiden?

they're not heavy lol.

queen of the

new wave of british heavy mommas

...

system of a down

SOAD

FTW!!!!

slayer

tom araya can really hit some big notes and every word he sings is intelligible

my god

that was awful

So, so wrong

Deftones

although Chino does also scream.

Handsome were melodic and heavy

as were Kerbdog and to an extent Therapy?

What about

Tool and A Perfect Circle?

Maynard, i tell ye, that man can fucking sing.

I'd count this even thought I don't really like jesu

their split with eluvium is all kinds of mint though

my bloody valentine

romantic doom? heavy + singing.

MBV aren't exactly what i'd call heavy...

....more beautiful

Though Boris kinda did a heavier version of the smae thing with 'farewell' off Pink

Melvins don't scream

and for that i'm thankful. They occasionally shout, but more often than not it's buzzo's tobaccy chewing, whisky drinkin' singing voice that comes out in the mix.

perhaps songs such as Night Goat, At The Stake may be what you're after?

kinda

depends on what you mean by heavy. I know they aren't traditionally heavy, like sabbath, slayer etc, but I still they are pretty heavy.

Jonin - The Secret

Random band, but the singer has a damn good voice

...

It exists in such abundance that it's hardly worth posting a list of examples.

Perhaps you should buy some music involving a Mr Mike Patton though. Might be your bag.

The God Machine

Robin Proper Sheperd's pre-Sophia band. Monumentally heavy in places with delicate and beautiful singing. Both albums are superb but a mite hard to get hold of.

Do I win the thread?

After further research, i have concluded that this may actually be the correct answer

and even if it isn't, i'm liking what im hearing - so thanks

er congratulations on winning - treat yourself to an apple

Just an observation, but

are Converge and DEP the only 'heavy' (and I use that word sparingly) bands that your average DiS-er knows about?

I doubt it.

I'm inclined to agree,

but often I'll come across threads, such as this one, that display such a distinct lack of knowledge it makes me think twice.

I think it is fair to say

that DEP and Converge get mentioned the most out of 'heavy bands' but, in my opinion anyway, that's cos they are the best.

You can't go very long on this board without seeing threads about Mastodon, Messugah etc etc though - I think our tastes are pretty diverse.

There was a facebook site once called 'Why do indie kids claim they like Converge?' seeming to imply that Converge were only for the tatooed elite which I think is pretty fucking pointless. I love Bel and Seb and Converge and I'm not going to apologise for that.

Peter Steele and Kenny Hickey from Type O Negative

Kurt Cobain
Glen Danzig
Nathan Explosion
Arcturus

Death to generic pointless screaming!

like Metallica?

or Black Sabbath?
or Down?
or Corrosion of Conformity? (with Pepper on vocals)
or Cave-In? (after they got a bit more tuneful)

Mastadon

but all their best songs

are grunts, bellows and roars!

Maybe so

but those grunts, bellows and roars are very melodic!

'Heavy' Music with actual singing..

is totally gay.

Your momma was pretty heavy

and she totally loved my dick.

you are

pretty much asking for opeth.
opeth opeth opeth. dont ignore these people!

It's gotta be MAIDEN

\m/

Roll on Twickenham.....gig of the year!
