pretty much THE three posthardcore bands, yes? i certainly see them as the holy trinity so far as influence and anthems go.

anyway, rank them, in terms of your personal love.

i genuinely can't choose between at the drive-in and fugazi. oh fuck it. i think i can...

at the drive-in > Fugazi >>>> Refused

oh god, even as i click "post" i'm seeing atdi's flaws and fugazi's perfection, but then seeing atdi's excitement....

yourselves?

Fugazi are clearly the daddies

without them the other two probably wouldn't even have existed, and I think they have better songs.

then Refused

then At The Drive-In last if only because I've never been a fan of Cedric's voice.

also

Fugazi have lots of brilliant albums, sustaining their awesomeness for a very long time in terms of the lifespan of the average punk band.

well obviously fugazi are, as you say, the daddiez

but sometimes if i haven't listened to them for a while, like now, i still remember my love for them, but imagine them to be unexciting.. even though just writing this i know i'm completely wrong. i love at the drive in's electronic and fx based between song improvs and stuff, which fugazi have never had the range for. conscientiously tho...

and as much as refused obviously rule, they've got average hardcore albums in their discog, and whilst atdi have average jangle rock and punk pop eps, god theyre still SO EXCITING

For me

Fugazi >>>> ATDI >>>> Refused

Fugazi had too much influence on ATDI for ATDI to be better.

However ATDI had better fro's.

I'm not sure

Refused are anywhere close to the other two...atdi would probably swing it for me for the same reasons. Just incredible live. I'm so glad I got to see them :)

don't make me chose

probably the same as you, but more like this:

at the drive-in >> fugazi >>> refused

yeah.

i can't believe you'd put ATDI over fugazi

fugazi >>>> at the drive-in > refused

You're so right

Fugazi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Refused/ATDI.

Fugazi are the greatest band of all time. I can't believe anyone could have the gall to even suggest that the likes of Refused or ATDI are in the same league. Neither are anywhere remotely close to the greatness of Fugazi.

picking is such an EPIC PROBLEM

i feel like a ONE ARMED SCISSOR trying to cut out THE SHAPE OF PUNK (TO COME)

well fugazi certain had a NEW NOISE

but atdi had much more than 13 SONGS going for them. refused were always going to end up in the INVALID LITTER DEPT. in comparison

it's not gonna be easy to SHUT THE DOOR on this one

i guess i'll be in the WAITING ROOM for a while, until i realise the RELATIONSHIP OF COMMAND and pick the superior band.

well if refused won it's certainly be a COUP D'ETAT, if i had to GIVE IT A NAME

maybe they'd be better if they had a BULLDOG FRONTing them?

hark!

is that the LIBERATION FREQUENCY i hear?

Refused

aren't really a patch on the other two, and I don't even like Fugazi that much.

Refused = FAIL

you might be right

i've just still not gotten over the first 200 times i heard New Noise

I think I'd like them more

if Nation of Ulysses had never existed.

well they took NOU's schtick regarding presentation and to an extent lyrics

but noone, to my knowledge, ever made a track that sounded like New Noise, or an album like SOPTC before

But other than the presentation

I can't really see that much to like about them personally. I just find them a bit...cheesy?

riffs!

jazz!
awesome voice!
electronics!

I think it might be the electronics and jazz

that put me off them! I dunno.
On the subject of Scandinavian post-hardcore bands though, I've always been fond of Calling in Dead and Ride Paranoia by JR Ewing.

i don't think there exists another band like fugazi

nor will there ever be one like them. sonically, they sound unlike any band that has ever been.

well they invented it

but its really not that had to pin down Fugazi's sound - see Bullet Union... tho i guess they still didnt have that "funky" sound much...

just the fact that they never used a set list and jammed all their segues without ever being opaque and "noisey"... pretty phenominal

I dunno frommy limited listens

They sound like a the beastie boys doin hardcore (they probibly did it long after Fugazi mind) and bits n bobs of Gang Of Four and maybe some Wire but with a little bit more aggresion.

?????

that's bizarre

beastie boys doing hardcore sounds like minor threat, more.

but yeah, definitely lots of go4 in fugazi

again im pretty new to this stuff

I can hear a bit of beasties in bits of fugazi. Have you herd Pylon - Gyrate that has some simular bits to I think in the drum and bass parts at least.

oh yeah see what ya mean

about minor theat there.

I've not herd much Fugazi and no Rufused

As far as I know. At The Drive-In are awsome though so I guess I'm gona have to check out Fugazi..... sounds like I'm gonna enjoy it.

what other bands could compete?

i personally love Million Dead as much as any of those three, but they're so indebted to the others that you can't really compare them

What about

Dillinger Escape Plan? They developed a new sound, spawned loads of imitators but still refuse to stand still stylistically. Calculating Infinity is a massively influential record, and a great one. So they might prove to be as important as Fugazi yet.
And The Blood Brothers too- indebted to Botch, certainly, but at least three great albums which show great variation. And they're pretty much unique.
What d'you reckon?

Refused:

jazz ramblings and overuse of compression = instant classic.

Discuss.

certainly too much compression on SOPTC

very protools-y sounding. BUT STILL!

I don't understand Fugazi

terrible, terrible lyrics. Refused are bad in that sense, but are so rawk that it's let-go-able.

ATDI at least have wtf moments that the others seem to humourless for.

*too

suffer your interpretations

of what it is
OF WHAT IT IS
of what it is
OF WHAT IT IS
TO BE A MAAAAAN

sigh

it's music. How can lyrics be that important to you that if they are bad (and Fugazi lyrics aren't bad in any universe that contains Feeder and Oasis and most bands) they override the greatness of the music?
Would they be better if they sung in a foreign language?

Fugazi are my favourite band

so I do struggle to see how the other two compare. I think ATDI are incredible but they are so much less than Fugazi in terms of the variety and depth and invention and in terms of transcending any stupid genre labels. blah
But yeah I still love ATDI. Refused I also like a lot but they aren't close to the other two in my opinion.
I'd probably swap them for Juno in my own holy trinity.

i've never knowingly heard juno

but still, when you see a posthardcore band forming, their influences will ALWAYS mention these three bands

you should

I can't get over how great this band are/were.

Fucking hell

Listening to 'The French Letter' know. Consider that record ordered

*now

yay

you won't regret it :)

very hard

all are pretty awesome.

but last.fm says

Fugazi>ATDI>Refused

Confession time

I don't like Fugazi and I'm not overly keen on ATD-I either. So Refused are an automatic win for me. But then I'd never claim to really be into post-hardcore stuff.

I massively, massively prefer Million Dead to all of these bands though.

Genuine help needed

Pretty new to Fugazi. Which album would set me off on the right track?

i only recently...

got in to fugazi. i started with 'the argument' as recommended by this here board and it worked for me.

^

just work your way through it all

Argument

Then Repeater, 13 Songs and maybe Red Medicine? But totally start with Argument.

I've never heard Refused

From their name I'd have assumed they sound like Korn or some sort of death metal band.

I'm actually quite surprised

Refused have been put on the same par as ATDI and Fugazi.

Clearly either I'm completely missing out on Refused's influence, I don't know enough about 'posthardcore', or the implication that Refused are anywhere near as good as ATDI or Fugazi is a complete joke.

I'll do my research and get back to you. Refused had better be worth it though *shakes fist*

Well then you'd be very wrong

For me it would be Refused > Fugazi > ATDI, as much as I like ATDI I just think the other two were/are superior.

In terms of starting with Fugazi, I'd say Repeater's a good introduction, or find one of their most popular tunes like Waiting Room to ease you into their world.

But for me Refused take the crown

Are you replying to me or generally to everyone

I have all the Fugazi albums and the Furniture EP and all the ATDI albums and the Vaya EP so I know all their stuff.

FWIW I'd say Fugazi have the edge.

all their stuff eh?

EL GRAND ORGO MUCH? HELL PASO? ALFARO CAJARE VIVO (massive sp) MUCH?

you don't have the internet???

el grand orgo is (or at least was) pretty easy to find. i mean, i found it when i was 16 and didnt know anything beyond hmvs in satelite towns

Never?

Start with Crazy Town's cover of 'New Noise', you'll LOVE it, promise.

refused

don't come close to the other two.

having said that, at the drive-in and refused have probably influenced more bad bands then good bands.

i'd rather be dead then make choice between the three. i've got no more puns.

what about drive like jehu?

DLJ are pretty close to being up there

in terms of how much theyre talked about,
but i've never had much of an emotional connection to them. probably heard them a bit late for that

Aarrrgghh! Curse you, this is going to bother me all day.

I love all three bands.
I'd probably say, personally

ATD-I > Fugazi > Refused.

At the Drive-In first, as they're the best live band I've seen, and there's a lot to the sound, and a visceral quality that Fugazi sometimes lack.
Fugazi I love very much, and have such an incredible back catalogue, it's hard to choose between them and ATDI despite them being quite different.
Refused- I only have the one album. Which is ace.

Fugazi-loads of great albums

the record label
the live shows
the politics

I feel they were what Refused strived to be and failed.

Refused however, one astounding album. pretty much brought post hardcore back from brink at the time. also the first band like that to really incorporate electronics into their sound. a much tighter asthetic than ATDI. the best european hardcore band.

I'm gonna get lynched for this but i think ATDI are massively overrated. don't get me wrong, they were really good, but relationship is their only good album. the rest of their stuff is very generic.

the only influence i have seen them have is that now loads of bands go mental on stage and before ATDI that didn' happen as much.

I know Refused weren't around very long

But they still were a great band. I feel that some people think Fugazi were better because they have a bigger output.

I'm not really bothered who Refused have or have not influenced, good or bad, I just prefer their music to the other two, albeit only marginally above Fugazi.

Ta -

Very much for the advice. Will seek these albums out this weekend.

Watched quite a few of their music videos and always been intrigued by Fugazi. This thread has inspired me to get stuck right in.

refused were around for ages

i'm hazard a guess at them being together for the same amount of time as at the drive-in.

the thing is

i think my favourite album by any of them would be The Shape OF Pu
