Did Nirvana play arenas?

So they played a headline Reading set in 1992 to rapturous applause and mass appraisal and this was their last show in the UK.

Correct so far?

They were due to tour the UK in 1994? The tour for which everyone has a friend who knows someone's uncle's dog who "had a ticket but - obviously - couldn't go". All these shows, from what i've read (it's limited), were in relatively small venues.

My question: did they ever play arenas, 'cause they sure would've filled them? Or did they not buy into the "let's fill a cow shed with people to maximise profits" scheme?

I remember

the Birmingham venue on that '94 tour was the Aston Villa Leisure centre, around 4000 capacity but a soul less shed of a place. I didn't get a ticket! But then I did see them at Reading and on the previous tour.

i've got ticket

number 17 from aston villa leisure centre!

all my friends took theirs back when it was cancelled but i still have mine framed.

i dont think they played

anywhere bigger than brixton in london

I think that was where they were booked on that last post death tour

i saw them at astoria and kilburn national (ace 1500 ish venue in kilburn, now some odd chruch)
on the nevermind tour

must remember this was pre britpop
and pre ubermarketing
and alt bands never really sold more than 250,000 albums tops

nevermind sold over time,
not in one big 1st week,
and most of that time was posthumous.

altho I guess yr metal bands, maidens and whatnots, played arenas but indie/alt/punk bands generally didnt really

(except The Cure)

I was looking at the new chart earlier. I was a bit bored, OK.
And
a. Nevermind's sales are dwarved by those of The Kooks', Keane's, Kasabian's and Kula Shaker's
b. there are 35 albums in the chart that have sold over a million, most of which are from the last few years

so
er
there you go

What?

Nevermind has sold over 25 million worldwide.

I don't think the Kooks have come close to that. Or do you mean the Kooks are currently selling more albums a month in the UK than Nirvana? If so, that's not really surprising, is it.

nope I mean

the Kooks have sold more copies of their debut in the UK than Nirvana have of Nevermind in the UK

Ah, gotcha.

That's horrible news. But still not really surprising.

They did...

play arena's but Nirvana preferred to play in small venues as it suited them and there sound better.

Read heavier than heaven it explains it all.

i had tix

to see them in manchester GMEX but he died before the gig happened :( still have my ticket stub, i doubt they ever did an arena tour as this tour would have been their biggest and it didnt happen.

over here that is anyway

i assume they might have played arenas in america or sowhere else maybe?

my question is answered.

Thank you contributors.

if memory serves

they did play an arena tour of the us as support to the chilli peppers. pearl jam was the other support band
