Ok, here's a pop-quiz for you all.

Here's a lineup for a festival that's actually happening. I want you to tell me
a) If you think it's any good
b) A guess at how much tickets cost
c) A guess at the kind of crowd this is supposedly aimed at.

I'm not organising this, so be as brutal/kind as you want.

Here we go:

Pendulum (DJ set)
Layo & Buskwacka!
Bloc Party (DJ Set)
MC Verse
Zero 7 (DJ Set)
Junior Jack Vs Sandy Rivera
Caspa and Rusko
Gilles Peterson
Howie B
Mr Scruff
Hype
Shy FX
Darqwan
Mark Jones
Melodica Melody and Me

And a load of local bands you probably haven't heard of. In fact, me and my housemate were asked to play at it (we're a folk duo with loop pedals...)

The line-up's not finished yet. But honestly, what do you reckon to that?

Opinions, please. I'll reveal the correct answers later.

a) not interested

in any of it
b) £60
c) scenesters

I haven't heard of

most of those people.
so I'm not really in a position to comment but I presume its a one-dayer and i'd be suprised if it was more than £40.
to be honest it looks like just another festival that's destined to fail due to the ridiculous saturation of the market that is going on at the moment.

Layo & Buskwacka!

are reall good DJ's and producers. i saw them play in club a while back and they spin any thing from electro to house to techno and I would imagain minimal now as well.

Mr Scruff
is really good and use to have a pie shop and a tea stall at gigs. He is a wicked DJ to and plays pretty much everything under the sun.

a) Not really apart from those I mentioned.
b) £40 maybe?
c) People into some kinda drum'n'bass cos of Shy FX, Hype and Pendulum.... Some house lovers and stoners.... then the local bands mates hehe I dunno.

interesting replies....

keep em coming... xx

...

a) I don't necessarily not think it's good but I don't want to go to it.

b) £35 maybe?

c) People into sort of alternative dance music?

.

yeah pretty good! the bloc party dj set is a bit of a disappointment in there though. and i'm not into pendulum but they're pretty big so...

gilles peterson, caspa&rusko, mr scruff, hype and shy fx is all pretty decent though

i'd say that's around 40-50, depending on how many other bands etc

i wouldn't say scenesters. scenesters seeing caspa&rusko? naaaaah.

...

Not entirely my thing, but i imagine if you were into DnB, beats etc then it would look good. i do love Mr Scruff though :)

£30

Student DnB types?

not Entirely interested but

i'd go if it was 20 quid or less.

but i expect more like 30 or 40 realisticaly.

dnb types although i went to Bristol's festival, cannay' remember the name, a few years ago just for that same Pendulum dj set, although that was like 8 quid. uni students into dnb mainly i'd say.

a) It looks quite fun, but I don't think

I'd ever go to a purely dance festival, even a one dayer.
b)25 - 30 quid sounds about right
c) People who like non commercial and vaguely alternative dance music.

Results!

Ok, not that you're bothered, but here's the real answers

a) well that's subjective really, i think it's shit.
b) tickets cost £30.
c) it's a charity event, based in Durham, run by some students. The charity is actually a collection of charity that the university raises money for every year (local and international). Oh, and Oxfam.

Now (and here's my rant), I don't know what you all think, but for a charity event it's a little bit pricey - especially for that lineup. I mean, yeah, that may well be a great dance/drum&bass line up for all i know (and care) but you'd think for a charity they'd want to broaden the appeal a bit. Not least because Pendulum have played in durham three times this year.

The market for the festival will be students at Durham - durham uni is not known for being a hot bed of alternative dance culture - and obviously local residents - Durham itself isn't known for it's banging beats. Durham students like cheese and bland indie. It's a fact. A lineup full of that would have the world and his dog applying for tickets.

Also, aA lot of people I spoke to say that £30 is a lot (though we are students after all). But on the other hand, there's plenty of students that'd pay £100 for ball tickets to go watch a U2 tribute band and get pissed in a tux and try shag a flatmate.

*And* Field Day is cheaper and has an infinitely better and more varied lineup. Granted, back by some awesome promoters who know what they're doing (well, in the 'booking bands' department, anyway)

Urgh. Maybe I'm just jealous - i probably couldn't organise anything on this scale.

Any thoughts? This rant hasn't panned out so well *deploy parachute*

RB

haha

a lot of students like this kinda alternative dancy stuff though don't they? Hence Mr Scruff pretty much playing unis across the country in a constant rotation...

looks ok for a charity bash, although you'r right 30quid is a little steep. Comparing it to field day is a little silly though isn't it? I mean they'r basically going for completley different things/ in general a different set of people...

I dont understand your point?

Its a charity event so it should be cheaper? Surely a charity event is to make money, and people are more likely to pay it if the cash is going to a good cause.

Its not as good as Field day? Its not trying to be is it? And you try getting there and back from Durham without it costing you a fortune.

Ok, fair point,

shouldn't really be comparing it to field day - its a completely different festival, but just demonstrating what can be achieved with the same ticket price.

And yes, it is a charity event, so it is primarily to make money. Price is a bit steep (imo), but yes, ok, you'll be getting people paying up for it because its for charity.

But my point is that the lineup is a bit restrictive. If I was organising a festival for charity I'd have as wide a range of big bands as possible. Not just DJs. Ok, yeah, you're getting the local bands in, but unfortunately the vast majority of durham students don't really know anything about the local music scene, so are unlikely to be drawn to the festival by them.

Maybe I'm just being really cynical - but I wouldn't pay £30 for that line-up, even if it's for charidee.

My main question

is it your flatmate they're trying to shag or one of their own?

looks like the sort of thing ashton court festival would have as a line up

as such it would be aimed at Bristolians, it would be fun, but just because it's a music festival, not for any other reason, and you can walk in the back door for free, about £10-£15 on the door these days.

however, there might be a few too many name djs so i'd say about £50.
