Not that i would anyway as i'm taking my bro to the gig for his birthday so that would be rude (+ i havent met any of you before anyway) so i'll be in the Strongrooms i think. Which is irrelevant.
Evangelista was really good. Reminded me of Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive. Magik Markers and Old Time Religion were aight. Old Time Relijun second best of the night but something about Evangelista was really captivating.
Cargo have stopped serving Brothers Cider which is a bit shit. Saw a few potential DiS people whilst smoking...didn't say hi to them. There you go...stick this on your reviews and smoke it or something.
thought Magik Markers were really quite dull tonight. was really disappointed. Unfortunately I hadn't seen them before and so had this idea of what they'd be like based on live recordings. By the time Old Time Relijun came on I didn't have the willpower left to watch them due to the soul crushing disapointment of Magik Markers
Evangelista sounded promising, although I found the singing pretty annoying- gave me a Quay Brothers kind of vibe until they kicked in.
sorry, this is not meant to be a moan-y post, just hoped something more discussion
I did quite enjoy the more rock orientated set, however I was hoping they'd implement their newer song based stuff in a more interesting way, like a combination of their free/improv stylings and the new songs. I don't know I was just expecting something different. I'm not by any means saying they were bad, I thought they were good, just massively underwhelming compared to what I had expected
I went for them rather than Magik Markers...i;ve seen MM before and was pretty impressed but this time wasn't as good...twas a bit more song based.
I thought the singing made Evangelista to be honest. Throughout the set i was trying to think of what it reminded me off and then David Lynch suddenly came in to mind. I thought the first track was amazing...when the vocals kicked in,
MM/OTR were great. both are clearly great at what they do. wasn't so impressed with evangelista....seemed a bit messy and lacking in too many ways. i dunno.
also: utr are great, but rubbish at running gigs to schedule. 12am is too late for a midweek gig to finish, though i did stay until the end.
Althoguh it always seem to be the same at Cargo.
When i went to the all dayer Jackie O thing i got there when doors opened. First band was over 3 hours later which was fucking shit,
was stunning, really grabbed my attention. She's playing the Old Blue on Sunday, wish I could make it.
Having seen the Magik Markers be stunning before, I was really really disappointed last night. Only 4 songs and none of the intensity that they had at past shows.
Her new band are so fucking awesome. I thought the addition of keyboards/laptop worked really well and the cellist was great but as always it her voice which makes them so stunning. I really wish the set was longer with more of the short punky numbers as they contrast really nicely with the more expansive songs.
I'm putting her and the band on at the Old Blue on Sunday if you enjoyed her you should come, she'll play a much longer set and the ace Polly Shang Kuan Band are supporting. Details:
I really enjoyed the whole thing, especially otr, arrington is a beast!! MM have it tough trying to incorporate their new song direction with the chaos of their earlier live sets but I think they're finding their own path. carla was great too and you have to give it up for the cellist!
one other thing about running times, last night only ran over by 25 minutes - apologies regardless, we try so hard to keep to schedule but sometimes this is impossible as we want every band to be happy and comfortable with their sound check (so that the show is as fun for them as the audience) and last night was particularly epic on the backline swapping front, hope you understand!
x
ps. totally go and see carla on sunday at the obl, more spooked atmospherics need to leak into the east end as a priority
I'm there
Mainly for Magik Markers, but the other acts look interesting.
I'm going.
Old Time Relijun are one of my favourite bands. If they're still like they used to be you'll love them. Phil 'mount eerie/microphones'
Also Carla Bozulich! So excited.
I forgot to finish that post.
Its meant to say 'plu phil 'mount eerie/microphones' used to be the drummer.
I'm there.
Mainly for Old Time Relijun. The rest should be pretty good as well.
me
fairly excited about all the bands.
yo
Yep
Magik Markers should be ace
Pre-gig pubbage anyone?
What? Like Old Blue Last?
Not that i would anyway as i'm taking my bro to the gig for his birthday so that would be rude (+ i havent met any of you before anyway) so i'll be in the Strongrooms i think. Which is irrelevant.
God no
was thinking more Foundry / George & Dragon
where is this?
i had no idea this was occurring :(
i love old time relijun
Cargo
I'm going
on my lonesome. Damn unadventurous friends.
Still, it's nice to know that even though i'm going for MM, the other two bands are going to be interesting.
Also
is there a club night on or anything after?
Also a fan of Old Time Relijun
bought Catharsis in Crisis recently - its like a very punk acoustic ladyland.. not seen them yet though..
Tonight....

Magik Markers were ace
what were you expecting?
well

I agree with the utr thing...

I missed OTR because of the late running.
Not that bothered, as I had not seen them before, so don't know what, if anything, I missed.
Magik Markers were ok, but I really enjoyed Evangelista.
But the best part of the Night was having a quick chat with Nikki Colk, who is excited about being in a band again.

Left after them because it was already near 11.
Carla just keeps getting better and better.
