Someone tell me why I should bother trying to suss it out, else it's dead to me.

you like pointless, arbitrary lists don't you?

course you do - you're a male music fan

VOILA

maybe arbitrary isn't the word

"meaningless" might be a better fit

SAFETYWINK

the last.fm threads here:

sort of meaningless. but how you can possibly say that about the site as a whole is beyond me

i'm being overly dramatic

and yanking your chain (you're affiliated, right?), but it doesn't quite do much for me. I can see the live calendar thing being a big plus (but i'm not much of a gigger) and the recommendation service is a good idea (though it hasn't provided any eureka moments for me yet)

There are negative aspects (primarily a tendency to provoke indier-than-thou psychological pissing contests) but it's a good service in all

:D

as well as this, the gig calendar is all kinds of brilliant.

^this

that gig calender causes me to spend soo much money though...

The lists are indeed amazing.

Also its great at recommending bands similar-ish to your tastes. I've discovered quite a few bands through last.fm

Here's a story.

It put me in touch with someone 2 years ago that is now my best friend.

It gives you 'neighbours' who share the same music taste as you - and they're always nice when you leave a message on their page saying "HI, WE HAVE SUPER COMPATABILITY!!1"

It gives you really good reccomendations

The radio is a really good way of finding new, decent bands you haven't heard.
CHARTS.
Full length, streamable songs with more choice per band than myspace.
CHARTS.
The listings for tours are useful.

^ Recommendations!

Are indeed ace. Apart from when it recommends you stuff you already have. But you can skip that.

The various forms of

Nick Cave and Neil Young popping up everywhere can get quite annoying sometimes!

last.fm saved my life

It's a great site, the problem being it gets better the more you use it. When you listened to enough music for it to know your music taste well (about 5,000 tracks i reckon) the site will suggest bands that complement and contrast your music taste.

The events calender is fucking amazing too. It tells me when any band that I like are playing a show in London.

Trouble is...

Most of the time I listen to music on my old 80gig Creative Zen Xtra (it's still servicable! why change?) - Last.fm is not going to be able to pick up on those plays I guess.

Dunno...

it picks up music i've played on my ipod when i connect it.

you need zenses

I have a Zen Vision:M and I use it to upload the tracks I've played to last.fm

It's a bit fiddly (you need to make sure that the tracks you sumbit are 'played after' the last tracks you scrobbed on last.fm) but it works fine.

i love last.fm

one of the best things on the internet!
I love looking at what other people are listening to, and its an easy way for people to find out what music you're into!

i love last.fm

but i hate it when embarrassing tracks get scrobbled and you have to remove them from your profile. anyone else guilty of this?

That's cheating.

You should embrace the dark side of your musical desires.

I have screen grabs of Alex from Holy Roar Records listening to 5ive. Trufax.

That's probably the good 5ive

the metal band on Hydrahead.

Hear'say

and Conjuncture.

*Conjecture

Get your hearing checked, because that's definitely what I said.

Yeah I thought that.

I'll have to photoshop the screengrab to say he was listening to Hootie & The Blowfish instead.

The good Hootie and the Blowfish?

On Southern Lord?

lol

.

(Sheryl Crow)

What?

yup

if I go to do something and leave my music on and it plays something shit, I have to delete it...

^this

encapsulates the downside of last.fm

If you listen to something then it should be in your charts, and if you want to listen to something you shouldn't have your last.fm chart in the back of your mind

It means

that you are forced to listen to cool music, just so that you can say how much cooler your charts are than others. Brilliant!

lists!

statistics!
charts!
the strange thrill of being able to see what other people are listening to RIGHT NOW!

plus, it makes it a lot easier to fill in those boxes that say 'music taste'.

yeah..

..it's so much easier just putting a link to lastfm in the music taste box. GONE are the days of typing out hundreds of artists!

I'm a bit ambivalent about it

but at least no twit can 'poke' you

Also

It's really interesting to look at other people's LastFms to see what they REALLY listen to. A friend of mine stopped using his when it became apparent that he generally lied about his music taste. LAST FM NEVER LIES!!!

Last FM is for people who think they have a class taste in music and like to show off.

Does it really have any other use? It is hideously self indulgent.

of course it is.

but that's only ONE of the advantages!

Fuck me, i've found so many good artists through lastfm. It's also great because now i don't have to use myspace to check out music. which was just bloody annoying trying to load all those overly-html scripted pages that were barfing gifs and all manner of flying things across your desktop.

hooray for simple and tastefully decorated band pages on last fm! I am a fan of the tagging system too. most useful.

Yes,this is actually a good point

I wish there was more music on Last Fm actually.

i like the idea of it

but I don't listen to much music on my computer as my speakers suck so it kinda doesn't work very well with my CD player and Decks.

It gave me Aereogramme

therefore I am ever indebted.

What is there to suss out

Install the programme and forget about it for a few months.
Check your profile after that and see if it does anything for oyou.

Its got me into loads of music I'd have never heard of otherwise

What more do you want then that?

Heheh.

I'll listen to this now!

ipod syncing

i have the problem that now i only listen to music on my laptop. cos ive got a newer ipod, it's plays don't get scrobbled and then my weekly charts will be inaccurate (Shockhorror!). so now i never listen to my ipod round the house. just carry my laptop everywhere so tracks are reliably scrobbled.

relating this has made me realise how much last.fm rules my life. anyone else suffer this much? please?

Is there a way to get the new ipods scrobbling?

I can't figure it out.

What?

Mines scrobbles.
Well, sometimes.

Here's a question

Why do so many of my top songs have 1 more play on last.fm than they do on my itunes?

Answer me that, eh.

Have you ever skipped past a song you're listening to

after the half-way mark?

It's a distinct possibility

I often pause tracks in the middle. Would that affect the scrobbling?

Unless you change the settings

last:fm scrobbles once you have played 50% of the song.
iTunes counts only when the song finishes.
Pausing in the middle wouldn't in itself do anythin, it should still scrobble and if you play it to the end itunes will count it.

Here's why I like it.

All of these things have already been mentioned through the thread but last.fm is just plain great.

Recommendations: last.fm will recommend you new music based on what you are already listening to. This is brilliant, it introduced me to bands like Okkervil River, Wolf Parade, Neutral Milk Hotel, Decemberists, I could go on, but you get the point.

Also, the event recommendations are really good, basically shows you gigs that are being played in your area by the bands/artists you listen to.

It is also cool to see what your friends are listening to and find people with exactly the same taste in music as you. And charts and stats about your music habits are also cool.

In summary, last.fm rules.

I recently signed up

but only have my work computer at the mo, so can't actually listen to anything. It all sounds like an ace concept, but I can't work out it's search facilities. How the heck do you find friends? I don't want to use my hotmail contacts or send invitations.

Many reasons

1. It temporarily allays my OCD/megalomania
2. It put me on to Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
3. It got me B-sides by Life Without Buildings from someone more obsessive than myself

On a less happy note, because I'm weird and use Windows Media Player to play my music and to sync my iPod, my iPod is impossible to hook up/scrobble. The natural counterpart to that is that I can listen to Girls Aloud on the train.

Last.fm is

.....and probably always will be, the first tab that I open up on my browser, every day.
