Morrissey has stumped up cash to ensure the smooth running of Love Music Hate Racism this weekend after NME pulled support for the event.
The festival, which celebrates its thirtieth year this Sunday (April 27), was faced with a £75,000 defecit after the weekly withdrew sponsorship.
Enter Morrissey, who not only stepped up to the plate with a contribution from his own personal fortune, but also rallied his management, booking agency and promoters to haul the event back into the black.
Given our protagonists' recent history we'll stop short of calling this latest turn of events gallant, but anything for a good cause, yeah Moz?
Yeah: “ This is a historic event spreading an important, anti-racist, message so it must be allowed to go ahead.
“Love Music Hate Racism got in touch and explained that the NME had pulled support, possibly as a result of their association with me, and asked if I could help as they had not been able to replace them. This is something I am commited to and we appreciate everyone coming together so quickly to make it happen."
The weekend bash is free to attend and will see diverse performers including The Good, The Bad & The Queen, The View, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Skepta appear at Victoria Park.

... if anyone's willing to part with £28,000, they must be pretty dedicated to the cause.
It's all relative, though.
Someone with, say, £10m in the bank paying out £28k is like one of us giving a fiver to a tramp. I think it's a very clever move by Morrissey. We all know he's obviously not a racist and i'm sure the point that he donated money to make this event happen will be mentioned by his lawyers if the business with NME goes to court.

... Morrissey always has, and presumably always will, have a hardcore following who will pretty much purchase anything he releases, so I don't think he necessarily did this with record sales in mind.
If I'm honest, he probably did give the money knowing full well that it would look very good indeed if his case does indeed make it to court. (I'm aware that this is completely contradictory to my first post - I am merely playing Devil's advocate) But I don't think sales really come into it.

Of course he supports LMHR anyway - his statement he releases backed in December regarding the NME article pointed this out clearly and that NME had gone back on their word regarding a free single giveaway with proceeds going to LMHR.
That said, it must have been pretty delicious to be able to make a mockery of NME at the same time, we all know that fella can hold a grudge.
And yeah...
