Guide to minimal techno

by cbrb1

Been getting into Minimal techno via a friend from Germany

I only have Cobblestone Jazz, Ricardo Vollobas and Trentemoller and wondered if people had recommendations/ links for good minimal tec

I have to admit I hated the stuff at the start due to the lack of endeavour and guitars plus the monotonous tones but turns out it's quite good to study to and I'm slowly being converted.

Couldn't find a DiS guide, something worthy of for the future?!

Anyway get posting links/opinions and recommendations

Minimal not 'minimal'.

Mike Parker.

Deepchord.

Mika Vainio.

Baby Ford.

Stewart Walker.

Jasper.

Kit Clayton.

Max Duley.

Rob Alcock.

Robert Hood.

Steve Rachmad.

DJ T1000.

Phase.

65D Mavericks.

Portable.

Sutekh.

Twerk.

These folks pretty much eat the current Cologne/Berlin/Ibiza set alive. Some Sleeparchive stuff is good though.

also try

Gabriel Ananda, The Black Dog, Dan Ghenacia, Guy Gerber, Pig & Dan, Richie Hawtin.. some of these are more minimal than others but worth checking out.

Gabriel Ananda

had a minted EP out on Trapez a while back. Beautiful little pingy globular synths etc. Some of his stuff is a bit drab though.

what was it called ?

I love Bambusbeats I have to say..

Miricel Whop EP :)

It's good too.

jesus, i think i just splooged

finally! someone on here who started a thread which isn't about some obscure crap indie band!!! yessss!!

definitely get your hands on the Deepchord album 'The Coldest Season'- incredible stuff.

Also, South America churns out minimal by the bucket load- there's Terrestre and his Nortec collective from Mexico ('Secondary Inspection' by Terrestre is just. amazing.) and from Argentina, there's the whole Igloo records crew. there are free EPs and albums on their website- http://www.igloo-rec.com.ar/
Seph, Genoud and QiK are recommended.

Monolake are IMMENSE.

That Gabriel Ananda was this, I think:

http://www.discogs.com/release/108303

It's the more techno-ey track that I love. Super-glacial, it is!

Also Heiko Laux is worth a butchers.

what monolake should i get?

i got their 'polygon cities' album and i'm not that impressed thus far, although it might be a grower and i might be a bit impatient!
what monolake record should i investigate next?!

I love pretty much all Monolake stuff

so it's a bit hard to recommend something specific. Also I have the 12"s and get confused as to how they were compiled for CDs. Try listening on Boomkat. Linear Atomium Remeniscence is a good start. Or try Rhythm & Sound/Basic Channel/Maurizio/Chain Reaction (all interconnected endeavours) for something a little bit warmer.

Wank.

'Reminiscence'.

ok cool, i shall investigate!

cheers!
ah, it feels good to talk about techno without someone going "isn't that 2 unlimited?"

heh

"techo techno techno techno"

seriously - what a track!!

I'm gonna check those

igloo rec ep's out cheers

wow yes

got this Genound EP on now its very good indeed

isn't it?!

amazing stuff.
the Lega album's pretty good too, although more IDM than minimal.

if you like Genoud, the Seph one is incredible!

got Seph on now ;)

it is indeed ace. I'm gonna get my ass downloading the rest of them as well. I shall keep my eyes on this lot. Thanx for the link.

no worries

they're doing some amazing stuff that lot- discovered them totally randomly via myspace one night as well- love it when that happens!!

That Igloo stuff

reminds me of things on Expanding Records and City Centre Offices. 'Tis nice.

Minimal rules

esspecialy in a club situation its a real force and is so mad seeing hundreds of people going mad to the slightest of changes. I dont know to many artists I'm afraid cos Im to poor to buy records at the moment so have fallen out of the scene. Ellen Alien's Sool comes out soon that will be special. Oh and I know sme peeps who do this http://www.ketoloco.com/ I keep meaning to go but its so far away from me. They know there dance music.

The Ketoloco

house parties in Leeds were supposed to be legendary! Pity I never went... Do you know if they still do these? Or just legal nights?

Well I think they do some after partys still

after the scala gig.. which is taking off really well. I'm pretty sure they still do stuff up north too soI'm sure they dont stop partying when the clubs closed they aint that kinda people hehe. they are an ace bunch the lot I've met really good laugh, I wana go to so many more of them.

...

hopefully i wont offend anyone by suggesting the following...

but i have a few fabric mix cds which are pretty satisifying as an entry level minimal thing. some of them are pretty old but i still enjoy them.

they are by...swayzak, m.mayer, tyrant, and ellen allien.

Agreed on Ellen Allien

Haven't seen From Here We Go Sublime by The Field mentioned yet - should be one of the first things you get, IMO.

swayzak and allien...

recommended.
my friend tom got me into minimal. i didn't know how i ever lived without it!

robert hood has a fabric out now which is supposed to be pretty good too.

oh, and Camea is also very good.

if you live in leeds, Audion in playing the faversham next sunday!

I love Robert Hood

he is one of the original Detriot Techno lot aint he? I really wana hear that new fabric mix by him.

It's not his best.

Check out the track 'The Metronome' for absolute fucking devastation.

Also

'Minus' off Internal Empire. It is astounding in its simultaneous simplicity and complexity, and is possibly my favourite ever techno track.

And if you like that, anything off Mika Vainio's Sahko label. Takes up where this track left off and fucks right off into the ether. His stuff under the name 'Philus' is especially good.

Robert Hood is one of the legends of

second wave detroit techno. He co founded Underground Resistance with Jeff Mills and Mike Banks as well as helping to originate minimal techno.

Check out the Minimal Nation and Detroit One Circle EPs for some seriously banging early minimal. It's very different from minimal in the modern club orientated sense, focusing on repetition and groove rather than the busy percussive clatter of current trends. Check this interview for some interesting insights:

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature-read.aspx?id=901

YES.

As I say, minimal rather than 'Minimal'.

Minimal Nation is great fo' sho.

Tyrant they are ace

not herd them in ages. I think I will go dig out theexcelent mix album 'No Shoes, No Cake' later

From Here We Go Sublime

by The Field is great.

Check out...

The first Fabric cd Fabric 1 - Craig Richards, really boss cd. Also the tyrant mixes are also worth checking out (but not the fabric one as i thought it wasn't to great)

Both The Field and Deepchord Presents: Echospace

records are great. This Bliss by Pantha Du Prince, while not exactly minimal, is amazing too.

deepchord

hasn't been out of my cd player for a while.
stunning cd.

marc houle is also pretty cool. saw him at asylum & technique in leeds a few months back and it was pretty dark!

generally anything on M_nus gets a listen too

.

drumcell&audio injection...their kimmunicate ep is something else

For a bit of electro crossover

Andrea Parker and her Touchin' Bass label are worth a crack.

Sweet jebus!

Finally a Minimal Techno thread...
I love everything that Trentemoller has done, that guy is the shizz. Villalobos is playing at the Warehouse Project this Saturday (3rd May), but alas I cant go due to lack of funds...

Pantha Du Prince - This Bliss is immense!
Also check out Sascha Funke - Mango its pretty good!

yes to trentemøller

although his 'live' show was a bit hit and miss. stick to DJing Anders!!

i'm off to that warehouse project, muhahahahahaaaaa! this guy Raresh is supposed to be pretty good too- i guess i will find out at the weekend...

..

LET ALL SUCK ON THE TEET OF ALEX SMOKE.

Aaargh!

I'm jealous. If he plays his Blood On My Hands Remix, it will be freaking insane! The guy is a genius!

Personally

I think it's shite compared to Shackleton's original.

Villalobos & co used to be alright until Richie got that haircut. Now it all sounds the same to me.

Early Playhouse, Force Inc, Perlon, Kompakt, Trapez and Traum stuff is mostly decent but I don't really hear these labels and their ilk going anywhere new these days.

that means the doors are wide open...

cue worriedaboutsatan's new album, due later on this year which will be minimal techno... with guitars!

seriously though, it will.

I know.

They're good. My old band played with them in Leeds.

really? what was your old band?

i'm in worriedaboutsatan you see

Oh right.

twentysixfeet.

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

i remember you guys!
awesome stuff.

Cheers.

Looking forward to hearing your album!

Camera Deep - Petre Inspirescu (Vinyl Club)

Phylyps trak II: IMMENSE TUNE!

Francois Kervorkian (sp?!) used to mix an acapella of that Iron Lion Zion tune over this. Well cool.

M4 is wicked too.

Definately check out

Stefan Bodzin, Leibe ist is the album and it is corkin..
Not sure if they file under 'minimal' but Booka Shade are great too IMO.
Trentemøller i've only just got into..

basic channel

if you like basic channel then the scion mix cd (arrange and process: basic channel tracks) is absolutely essential. better listening than any single BC release on its own. it's a mix of basic channel material arranged in the most sublime way you could ever imagine, going from light to relentlessly heavy back to light again.

marcel dettmann's new 12", climes, is fucking ace. ben klock is worth checking out. both very dark. ostgut ton, the label they release on (berghain, the berlin techno club, used to be called ostgut before it closed) is hot shit right now.

on a dubbier tip, try fluxion (vibrant forms 2 is amazing), deepchord, vainqueur, substance, brendon moeller...

haha

tis my mix! not really that mnml though...

....

Fairmont's album Coloured in Memory was excellent.

Come to think of it all Border Community stuff is... Holden's album and Nathan Fake's stuff is ace.

fairmont's 'palace pier' ep

was also very good.
check out 'trinity' from it- very deep indeed.
holden! shit, completely forgot about him!!! '1010101' is amazing!

Minimal

Rekorder (Huntemann + Bodzin project)
The techno releases on Tiga's Turbo label are always guaranteed goodness.
If you want minimal ambience then check out whatever is released on Kompakt.

Also

Samurai FM is a great place for all things techno in general

cheers for all the links peeps

there seems to be a minimal techno core on DiS!
is this gonna be the next genre busting into the UK, after "math" and nu wave or is it too sophisticated or seen as boring to engender a scene, the germans are MAD for it and they usually cotton on to our trends a few months/ year after us!

is there such a thing as maximum techno or is that just childish?!

haha

i doubt it.
the amount of indie schmindie chin strokers on here is unbelievable- put them in a club and they'd either die on their arse or want to go home. either way, they ain't listening to minimal techno!
not when there's another boring, over-hyped indie band to splurge over!! hahahaaaaa!
sorry, just a bit excited that for once, someone's talking techno on here.

maximum techno? hahaha, i reckon 'moaner' by underworld. maximum to the max.

Maximum Techno! Partyzeit Ja?

Chris McCormack-Erase Techno

Pretty much fits that definition!

best thread in ages

I don't feel so alone now on here now

Justice and them lot are pretty MAXIMUM techno

there is some right noisey stuff around.

Minimal to my ears is pushing things forward and one of the best movemnts in dance music for a long time. Its been going for ages now I have soem Ritchie Hawtin records from the early 90s that sounded like much of the Minimal stuff today.

Keep up the Techno loving you lot hehe

Ah! I just love how rare

these threads are, yet when they appear it's an explosion of creativeness and recommendation.

Kompakt is my label of choice.

has anyone got a mixmag

'animal vegetable minimal' t-shirt?
surprised no-one's mentioned luciano yet.
my favourite ever minimal tune is possibly cerosin natalies 'ajjaaaajaaa', check it here... http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=329853328

agreed

on the amount of love for this thread.
good work that man!

i investigated the field, kompakt and soma's 200 release anniversary compilation last night and now have a pretty full list of stuff that i need to buy!! haha.

Rocking horse shit now,

but maybe you could download these from somewhere:

http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=21777

http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=18083

There are some small tasters here. Seriously amazing stuff.

right

im going to recommennd everyone the best album ive herd this year (by anyone), its a double cd (mixed) of original tracks and it's called ANIMALS and its by MINILOGUE and its AMAZING.. beautifully mixed and beautiful and hypnotic tracks...

it has the feel of a techno boards of canada..
the first cd is mainly tune based and the second had more ambient works.. iv not seen it in this thread but my god its awesome. GET IT!

id also recommend, thought this is straying slightly towards techno, the LOCO DICE album, (7 dunham place) SACHA FUNKES album (mango) and going a bit deeper, the ANDERS LLAR album (sworn) which is fntastic and so full of deep housy lushy lovliness that i had to mention it....

that is all.

Loco Dice

is ace I have some 12" of his really subtle and building stuff.

Minilogue Animals

sounds really interesting too I must look out for that.

also

check out the releases on Lucianos label - CADENZA, also one of my favroutite labels DIAL RECORDS (home of pantha du prince, efdemin, pigon etc) and also a new favourite REMOTE AREA RECORDINGS... all very good indeeed

I really like the Matthew Dear and the Michna tracks.

Matthew Dear

the album is great.
