There has been a good bit of screaming in music.
Who started it?
Who were the pioneers of screaming?
Who are you favs?
Who are the ones you'd like to scream "Shut up!" at?
My favorite screams:
Kurt in "Spank Thru" (well, an assload of Kurt)
Shagroth in Dimmu Borgir's "Hybrid Stigmata-The Apostosy"
Captain Beefheart (tons)
i love you
i love you too
.
cedric bixlar zavala
ftw
especially in 'invalid litter dept.' when he goes "scalpel, scaaaaaaaalpEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
who dis cat?
:)
ex-lead singer of at the drive-in
now lead singer of the mars volta
I shoud know that
I've got frances and delousing, yeah, he's a keeper.
One of the
At The Drive-In singers/screamers
oh man
i just listened to this... it sounds like his vocal cords are coming right out his throat.
but some screams in music and it makes it about 90% better.
favourite scream
the girl from noirdesir on 'vive le fete'
or mike patton on DEP's 'when good dogs...'
those are screams I have not heard
but I have a bunch of patton stuff- what is DEP?
Love female screaming- Diamanda, Janis- good girl screamers are not exactly a dime a dozen.
dillinger escape plan
ep where he sings with them (including aphex twin cover)
Yeah, When Good Dogs is one of my favourites
Patton is the best at the throaty scream.
'The Godfather' off Director's Cut is another great example.
Thats a good question
Who started all the screaming?
Was it like a Grand Master DXT thing when he accidently invented scratching cos him mum shouted for him and he grabbed the record and rubbed it back and forth while he listened to what his mum had to say... then had a eurika moment.... and invented the scratch....
but with maybe some ones band being to lound and no microphone around at the time....
Or did Grand Master DXT's mum invent the scream with th music?
Maybe Screamin' Jay Hawkins or James Brown
John Lennon took primal scream therapy and then started screaming on his records.
I'm sure it wernt no accident tho, people gotta scream.
that is true BRING THE NOISE
AAAARGHHHHHH!
I may have an investigate into the origins of the first recorded scream
amazing girl screamer
Rolo Tomassi she looks so sweet and inocent untill she unleashes some kinda beast from within.
http://www.myspace.com/rolotomassi
rolo tomassi ftw!

I've still never heard them...

dillinger escape plan
oh yeah I know
Dillinger Escape Plan... you crazy kids with your abriviations
karina utomo from young & restless
lass has a fair set of lungs on her. extremely easy on the eye too.
matt caughthran from the bronx
he's another favourite screamer.
as is pink eyes/father damian from fucked up.
please be my
illegitimate love child.
also
on Dinosaur JR-Don't
^ Most frightening screaming
ever
apparently, lou screamed so hard
that he coughed up blood afterwards.
hardest core.
Casey Chaos from Amen
natural born screamer
Thinking about it
I have not seen many great screamers live except for Maynard James Keenan and
Suprisingly though- Beck was a good screamer live and Jeff Buckley did some amazing live as did (and don't laugh) Tom from Editors.
I need more GIFTED live screaming experiences.
legend that is
LEE DORIAN
Jacob Bannon
means it more than all of those other guys.
yup
the first scream in Concubine and his shrieks towards the end of Thaw for example, simply devastating.
other good yelpers:
Dimitri from Dillinger sounded pissed off to the point of being terrifying
Aaron Weiss from mewithoutYou can let a good 'un out when he wants to
the ones in Thursday's Cross Out The Eyes (A TRACE OF, A LOVE SONG, classic teen angst memories right there)
Invalid Litter Dept.
by At The Drive-In, as someone has said - it's fucking blood curdelling. As soon as that song comes on, I'm on tenterhooks till the scream and often rewind it.
The Relationship of Command is incredible and, for me, that song is ATDI's peak.
Sticking it on.
^5
Re: Relationship Of Command
One of the most consistent albums I own, does it even have an average track?
no...
no
Ian Svenonious
During his Nation of Ulysses days.
Those of you with delicate sensibilities please avert your ears
Richie from Cloacal Kiss/The Sawtooth Grin is my screamer of choice. He can manipulate both sets of his vocal chords, which produces a noise like a sonic jet backfiring.
http://www.myspace.com/cloacalkissband
Don't say I didn't warn you!
this is plain sick
:)
fucking awesome
that voice is ridonkulous
Trent Reznor:
a fair screamer
Marilyn Manson:
a fair to midland screamer
nick oliveri on
'qotsa's "six shooter"
Dani Filth
Screamin fool
Mike Patton
Pwns this thread!
I heartily endorse this thread.
My fave screams-
The beginning of Love is Happiness by the Icarus Line... first thing you hear on the album.
Pixies - Nimrod's Son... near the end, over the spanishy guitars... sounds demented in a good way!
McLusky- pretty much loads of Do Dallas?
Slint- The end of Good Morning Captain- apparently the vocalist (can't remember the name off the top of my head) was sick in the vocal booth!
God, how did I forget Charles?
Black Fracis is amazing.
burt mcrakken
the used
total screamer
fucking hell
aaaah-aaaaaaah-aaaaaaaaaah-aaaaaaaaaaaaah
ahw-ahwww AAAAAAAARGH! Shake it up baby now! twist and shhhhout...! etc.
the beatles did do the occasional good thing...
The guy from Buried Inside
sounds like he's having electricity shot up his bumcrack everytime he screams. Proper good.
i have nothing but true love for this thread
David Drainman
Wa-ah-ah-ah-ah.
Progressive screaming. Only in the future will we appreciate what he did for modern music.
Kevin Sharp
of Brutal Truth
Even after Anal Cunt made me doubt him with 'Benchpressing the effects on Kevin Sharp's vocals'
Circle takes the square!
which is my answer to everything...
I love the combination of 'clean' and screamed vocals and no band does it better than them. Beautiful.
^this is true
They also score in the Good Femaile Screams category.
The two vocalists from The Number Twelve Looks Like You have some of the best screams i've ever heard, and Chino Moreno's screams on Hexagram by Deftones are amazing.
+1
YYYs, Art Star,
The screaming on this is madness, so good!
my favourite
is the wrens 'this is not what you had planned' so unexpected
Robb Flynn
MACHINE FUCKING HEAD!
WOOOOOOOOOOAOAAOAOAOOAOAOAARRRRRRRRRR
You can't forget...
Maynard James Keenan guesting in 'Know Your Enemy' by RATM. Flawless scream. Top marks.
I must hear that
:)
mmhmm
That is a very well worked scream, fantastic build up to it. Great song.
Scot Screamer Craig B.
in "Question Is Complete" on Aereogramme's "A Story In White"
a good example of screaming juxtaposed with pretty music.
the end of "post-tour, pre-judgement"
is also a pretty damn good example!
As are
"Zionist Timing" and "Wood"
Some fine screams from that man.
and
"shouting for joey"
i think shouting for joey
is/features Simon Neil of Biffy for the screaming.
Jim Morrison
He was my first love in screaming.
...
No love for Mikey from Sikth? That guy is mental. Like medically.
i think nate from finch wins
hes like a tiger it doesnt sound forced at all.
I like Aaron Turner's throaty howl
mmmm
what about
Jacob Bannon?
Daryl Palumbo
from Glassjaw, has the most incredible screaming voice ever. I've never heard someone sound so fucking angry as Daryl on Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence, especially on Lovebites And Razorlines & Hurting And Shoving.
Other than that, Jacob Bannon from Converge is incredible, quite a different type of screaming though. Someone's mentioned Bert from The Used, despite The Used being shit (aside from the first album) he is an amazing screamer, goes seemlessly from singing to screaming, really impressive.
Some of you guys on this board
are so nu-school it hurts.
A list of best screams in songs:
The beginning of Heart Attack American by The Bronx.
The chorus to Homewrecker by Converge (or any other song by them).
Any song by Das Oath.
Anything on Burn Piano Island, Burn by The Blood Brothers
Hexagram by Deftones.
The Way Of The Men Of The Stuff by 80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster
The ending to Tip Your Bartender by Glassjaw (Fashion! Buy it! Load it! Shoot it!)
The intro to Pornography For Cowards by Million Dead.
The ending to One Out Of nONE by Oceansize.
Any scream in a Rage Against The Machine song.
The chorus to Suggestions by System Of A Down (also amazing is the high pitched singing after the bridge).
That is all for now.
Shoot iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-TUH.
SAILOR! SCENT!
SAAAAAIIILLLLEEEEUUUUURRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!
Also
I don't know if the scream in Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy can be counted, but that's fairly ace too.
Jacob Bannon, hell yeah!
Shame he can't replicate it live though.
How about The Blood Brothers? Burn Piano Island Burn is pretty much a tribute to the fine art of screaming. Joyous lung scraping moments aplenty.
johnny whitney
is definitely one of the best. his voice is the Psycho violins of screams.
Anal Cunt
Julie Dorion screaming near the end of Blinded by Eric's Trip
has to be the best scream ever recorded.
I mean Doiron
Sorry Julie.
Tim Williams
of Vision of Disorder
...pretty much all the way to the bank.
Pete from Down I Go.
He sounds like a wounded dinosaur. :D
