Pennie is good friends with The Horrors front man Faris Rotter (Faris Badwan), however, he does not enjoy The Horrors music, just as The Horrors are said not to like The Automatic. The two bands toured together for the NME Awards Indie Rock Tour; prior to this, though, James Frost and Robin Hawkins lashed out at The Horrors branding them as "crap".[8]
He is also friends with Gallows front man, Frank Carter. Gallows is stated as one of Alex Pennie's favorite bands; "It's quite nice to be able to enjoy your friends [sic] music".[9][10]

Now that he has left, particularly as he was the reason (or a large contributary factor) why so many people hated them.
People may or may not agree me with me here but i think yourcodenameis:milo were one of the best british guitar bands of their time (amazing live!) so to have their frontman in the automatic........
The trouble is..........
he was also their USP.
Without him, they're just another band.

Were indeed amazing live and Paul Mullen is a great frontman. I suggest The Automatic bring more from him than cursory yelps. Apparently The Automatic owe a great debt to YCNI:M in terms of influence so it could be pretty good.
One issue: Paul Mullen's throat is notoriously made of glass and longer tours could absolutely fuck him.

The Automatic, pretty much one hit wonders really? I see they got their Reading slot based on how big they were last year, and therefore have to go through the painful process of "Play your hit and fuck off", I want to call it Dandy's Syndrome...

I have nothing but hate for Pennie-era Automatic but am interested to hear what having Paul now does for their sound.

He left The Automatic coz he didn't reckon the rest of the band members were "cool" enough for his liking.
If anyone is considered uncooler than the likes of Pennie then I feel very very sorry for them!
