good music for a hangover?

by mairimoo

I have a really appalling hangover. I was at The Social last night seeing Ulrich Schnauss and Airiel (who were so loud that my ears are still ringing) and I drank an awful lot. I am trying to find music that makes my hangover more bearable. I have tried Richard Hawley, which was a bit like wrapping myself in velvet - nice. I have tried Lemon Jelly, also good. I have tried Orbital - bad, too many bleeps. What do other people listen to?

something fun sunny and poppy

so that you get a tiny high off the rest of the alcohol in your system and forget about the badness.

any band suggestions?

i like fun, sunny and poppy but fear my head may fall off if i jiggle it too vigorously.

Beach House

except they are really depressing, so if you're feeling a bit sick, they might make you feel sad.

beach house are good

but i don't like them quite enough to tolerate with a hangover. should be seeing them at ATP soon!

Miracle Fortress are doing a splendidly gentle job right now.

Brujeria

or some similar heavy metal. The feeling of being driven into the ground is even better when feeling delicate. Also:

"Their songs, which are sung entirely in Spanish, are focused on Satanism, anti-Christianity, sex, immigration, narcotics smuggling, politics and also include lyrics about killing white people (despite having some white members in the band) so it is likely tongue in cheek."

Or some decent hardcore. Fast, harsh and loud is best with a hangover for me personally.

i am trying hardcore techno

blotnik brothers and manasyt being tried as we speak. nothing like a bit of bulgarian post-communist techno. it is feeling a bit like i am being tortured.

Prurient

might be good hangover music if you really felt like you wanted to die, or maybe Whitehouse, or something really dirgey (sp?) like Khanate.

For uplifting, light-at-the-end-of-the-hungover-tunnel perhaps something by The Field. But you've got to go through the pain first, thems the rules.

i'm saving The Field for later

but yes, first the suffering.

the techno very nearly killed me.

i have taken refuge in Slowdive.

i have not heard of Whitehouse. should i have?

They were

a power electronics band from the early 80's. Sounds kind of dated nowadays compared to other stuff thats going on, but there's no denying their influence. God I sound like such a wanker. Mandatory wikipedia link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitehouse_%28band%29

Galaxie 500 is nice for hangovers when you want to give your poor, dehydrated prune-like brain a cuddle.

Ya Slowdive is good

as i said in that Slowdive thread.

the first Stone Roses album too. It's really uplifting without being annoying or harsh on the ears. I'm not really a massive fan of theirs but that album makes a lot more sense to me on mornings where i feel like death.

if i was you,

id go buy the heima dvd by sigur ros.

put it on next time your hungover, curl up in bed and watch and listen.

im super serial.

Russell Haswell

Thank me later.

Sigur Ros and Galaxie 500 both good

nice recommendations so thank you for those. my brain and body need cuddling.

Vespertine

maybe,

or RRRRRAAaaaaaaaaaaadiohad.

Drink plenty of water

And some pop music. Guided By Voices Bee thousand works for me.

i used to use

vespertine...it was as good if not better than moon safari for hangovers. maybe chromatics nowadays

Welsh!

I tend to find Gorkys Zygotic Mynci or Super Furries have the ability to lift me from the doom of hangover without also sending me into a doomed mood!!

Boards of Canada

Music Has The Right To Children.

and If I Could Say I Love You by Venetian Snares is nice if a little creepy.

Galaxie 500 are doing it for me

My brain obviously wants shoegaze because Slowdive and Galaxie 500 have worked best so far.

However, I am going to try Boards Of Canada a bit later. And then The Field.

Now I have to go and vote for London mayor. I fear that having to move will undo all my good work.

Great choice

what album? I had This Is Our Music on my ipod journey to work this morning. Always a soul soother. Other than them something like Spacemen 3's Playing With Fire, Vetiver - To Find Me Gone, Neil Young - On The Beach, Brightblack Morning Light. They tend to make a sore head a little better, along with lot's of water, a berocca, toast, and a nice cuddle.

Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

Leonard's croon at his smoothest and lyrics at his most intelligent, all backed by the kind of smooth midi-jazz you might find in an early 90s Lucasarts point-n-click game. This shit has got me through many a killer hangover

I'm feeling a little bit groggy this morning, but since my CD player is broken i've taken a different tack - BACK IN BLACK

Avoid Jeff Buckley.

I listened to 'Grace' when I was feeling a tad delicate the day after Saints got relegated from the Premiership and nearly killed myself. I won't be repeating that mistake when we drop out of the Championship on Sunday.

Begin with...

Alligator by The National

then have a nice bath listening to The Velvet Underground's Loaded

stop. Watch This Morning with Phil & Fearne.

Listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco.

And THEN by the time you've moved onto SFA's Hey Venus you'll be feeling just grand.

Just have a fry up.

The cholesterol absorbs the alcohol. I agree about listening to 'Yankee...' though, although you don't need a hangover to listen to it.

Mazzy Star

SIKTH is all you need.

Weird voices, time signatures that don't even exist.

That'll sort you out.

Vampire Weekend

might be worth a punt.

It's

the little things we do - by the zutons

the best song about/for hangovers ever. the lyrics are awesome...

Well I woke this morning with a teardrop in my eye
Because last night it felt like the best night of my life
Now there's something that is wrong rotting my insides
And I don't understand why my brain wants to die

I had women, wine, party time and everything that mattered
And when I woke up today you know my brain was all in tatters
I had bits of lungs shrapnel glass and cigarettes for breakfast
And my lips are blue, my toes are numb and I think I've got the shivers

It's the little things we do when you go out in the night
And it's pay day today just for having a good time
As your hangover unfolds well the questions will arrive
Why do I feel like death just for having a good time

So I get up and go down the stairs and try to make a sandwich
But the ham and cheese, margarine they speak an evil language
It says "Don't eat me I don't deserve to be there in your stomach"
And I break on down and cry why do good time turn to bummers

It's the little things we do when you go out in the night
And it's pay day today just for having a good time
As your hangover unfolds well the questions will arrive
Why do I feel like death just for having a good time

How about

Hangover by Gomez from their Liquid Skin album:

"Be the light from my window
Be the time at my table
Be my hangover girl
Be my headover girl
Be my headover girl
Be my headover girl"

Bon Iver

'For Emma, Forever Ago'. It's been quality approved through 4 hangovers in the last wee while. Gently nurses it away....feel better soon!

soul soothers please

This is our music is the Galaxie 500 that worked really well earlier.

I just went to vote and listened to Hearts Of Black Science while I did that - that went pretty well too.

For a moment there, I thought the fresh air was going to make me all better, but no, it didn't. I now feel quite pathetic. i am going to try drinking some banana milk.

Nick Drake will lead to me feeling very melancholy. Sometimes i like this, but not today. I am liking the Spaceman 3 recommendation, but sadly have no one to cuddle me :-(

Born To Run

Is my recommendation. Time honoured and foolproof.

LFO - Sheath

the tune Snot works wonders.... blow the hangover away, I did this once and I was ready to go again in seconds.

Or maybe something with no beats at all I have a mix by a mate called S'no beats its wonderfull has aphex twin, eno, burial, all sorts on it but that maybe wont help as yu dont have it.

andrew W K

its time to party

kings...

of convenience.

hair of the dog

I always prefer to soothe a hangover with a pint of beer...likewise you should have an hour of ULTERIOR or White Zombie.

Sweat it out...

probably

laura marling
or death cab for cutie.

alternatively just listen to the shipping forecast - it will numb you out of your hangover

This might help

This blog http://egoeccentric.blogspot.com/ has been doing Hangover mixtapes for the last few weeks with special guests picking the tracks last week was Dan Deacon
