i just found out the deadline is this weekend, and i haven't thought about it. It's between Edinburgh, Durham and York. Edinburgh is an unconditional, and i need AAA for Durham and AA for York, which is quite harsh. Are either York or Durham good? I would like a change from Edinburgh which i already know, but it's cheaper.

Please give any opinions about any of these places.

York is really nice

but it's a lot like edinburgh, except smaller. I reckon Durham would be pretty much the same...except probably a bit smaller than york.

Edinburgh is great, I'm at the art college there and it's an awesome place to live.

durham

is like a realy good uni.
sorry thats all ive got.

in terms of cities

im guessing edinburgh will have the most on, but im guessing as you want a change that doesnt matter. Durham is a good uni though, i was going to apply there. thats about all i have really.

Just don't mention your choices to Wrightylew...

Anyway.

York: The accommodation is crap, as is most of the architecture on the site, but they're refurbishing that and I don't suppose it matters too much anyway. The students there seem a decent bunch, the ones I met anyway. Staff were excellent (but this is History-centric) Library was good. The city is nice to look at, but quite dull compared to other places (some decent pubs though), but Leeds is just down the road.

Durham: Similar to above, incredibly pretty but not a lot going on except Newcastle down the road. Don't think there's a decent record shop in the town. Cheap beer and cider when I went. Students all seemed very hoorah Henry, but you'd expect that.

I don't really know Edinburgh, but from what you're saying it sounds like you know enough anyway.

What are you planning to read?

were you at york then

sibley?

I'm still in Sixth Form, and it's my insurance choice.

But I've visited the Uni for two open days, and I've visited the city twice separately from that.

Just reading your post below, the music scene did sound alright from what I could gather from the students I spoke to at the open days. Any good record shops in the town?

it's for history as well

i should have gone to the open day and that. ta

i'm at york

it's a really nice campus and a lovely city. transport is good (but expensive) but in terms of music, it varies quite a lot. we have fibbers (a barfly venue) which pretty much gets all the small bands on the gig circuit at the moment, and also runs a pretty good indie night on fridays.
there's also a bigger venue (so i'm told by fibbers barstaff) being opened up in June, with the view of holding a proper club night and getting some bigger bands (biffy clyro been penciled in apparently).

the clubs are pretty shit and get old really quickly, but there's quite a good drum n bass and dubstep scene begining to form if that intrests you at all.

i'm very much enjoying my time here, basically!

not a massive dubstep fan

but that sounds good

All beautiful cities, all very good universities.

I know happy people at all three.

Which has the best rep for your subject? Have you looked round any of them? Gut instinct is often a surprisingly good indicator.

I know a few people at York

When they talk about the place they all same the same thing: "Oh, it's so lovely, and the architecture isn't really *that* bad, and we actually have like three clubs now, and you kind of get used to spending most of your night travelling to and from Leeds, and did I mention the pretty old buildings, because we have lots of those..."

It does seem nice, but not one for the extrovert.

how well do you know edinburgh?

you live in glasgow right? obviously edinburgh is just down the road, but living there is different to visiting...

durham is a great uni in that everyone i know who went there is doing very well in their careers. the education is excellent as are the post-uni social benefits. but the town, whilst pretty, is dull dull dull and you'll find yourself visiting newcastle often. the student body is mostly 'posh' - which may be an issue for some - bigoted idiots mostly. the people i know from durham are lovely.

york is a bit better in terms of social life, but is still quite boring from what i know. the uni is very good, and the town pretty, but for me it's one of those inbetween places i think is a little pointless to spend formative uni days in.

edinburgh is a great city as you know. uni is very good too and you'll meet a slightly more interesting and diverse bunch there compared to the other two. i would pick edinburgh without second thought. one thing though - it'll be four years rather than three i think, because scotland is weird. which means you get another year of being s student! :-D or - you have another year of being a student :-(

so, um

durham or edinburgh, not york.
and i'd go for edinburgh.
if it were me. which it isn't.
