I've noticed that quite a few people here like them. Have you not listened to the lyrics? They're fucking awful. I don't know how anyone can listen without cringing their cheeks up into their eyeballs. Seriously, please stop liking this band. You are wrong.

Zapsta | 10 May '08, 00:36 | Send note | Report this | Reply

i like them.

don't really care!

infact

I'M GOING TO LISTEN TO THEM RIGHT NOW.

you go gurl

I'm imagining you making sharply for the stereo, ha!

While I'm at it

Minus the Bear are fucking dog turd as well.

The lyrics are not cringeworthy at all.

They are a bloody fantastic band you nugget.

cringeworthy is gold

give us more blaaastisms!

yeah but

jesus is just a spanish boy's name

:D

:(

What exactly

are the cringeworthy lyrics you're refering to?

Now I... I tremble...

because this fumble... has become BIBLICAL!

I think there's some seriously excellent lyrics on Midnight Organ Fight, personally (also I love the euphamism of the title alone). There's some dodgy couplets in there too, but then it's only really exemplified by the... er... passionately incompetent singing. But if I can excuse early Nick Cave and Greg Dulli, I can excuse Frightened Rabbit for the same.

oh shush.

MAKE MUSIC THAT SOME CUNT MIGHT LIKE.

^ example of excellent lyrical prowess.

serious answer:

i don't think the lyrics are particularly bad at all. i mean, they're not exactly outstanding either, and they do dip into mediocrity sometimes, but not really to a cringeworthy extent. also, a lot of it is in the delivery... some people seem to be put off by the vocals but i seriously love his voice.

Maybe it is something to do with the delivery

Maybe it is the way he sings "I need human heat" like it's the most profound thing ever. I don't have any particular problem with his voice though. To a large extent, I think people are just looking for a British band to cling on to.

well technically both

but the first moreso.
im not sure what you mean by him singing that line like its the most profound thing ever? his vocal styling doesnt change for that one line, and there are by far more 'profound' lyrics on the album.

and yr suggestion that people are looking for a british band to cling to doesnt really hold any water. i dont think people actively seek a british band to clutch onto.

He repeats it!

And it finishes the chorus! To be fair, I just listened back to the song, and I agree with you, but it certainly stood out the first time I heard the song on the radio. It's cliched and simplistic and generally horrible.

As for people not actively looking for British bands to cling to, I agree, but when they hear a new British band, I do think that they are sometimes prepared to be less critical than they would of an American band, simply because they are British and there aren't that many great British bands around and it's nice to have something to be proud of, etc.

On a more specific note, it can't simply be coincidence that they seem to be especially popular amongst the Scottish contingent on the site, can it? There's an argument to be made for music made by a Scottish band having particular resonance with a Scottish audience, but I don't think much of one (although maybe there's something in the quite strongly accented vocal?). People are just naturally inclined to support their own.

^ totally just proved my racism point

I'M DISAPPOINTED, ZAPSTA

Sho-no!

nah-dam!

GEDDIT?

I do

Not as good, is it?

Xenophobia

innit

Maybe you have a point

But they are also pretty popular in america, considering they've only just released their first "proper" album. We all know Americans want to be any other nationality than American but traditionally they resist British bands.

It's a bit like saying people like Gordon Brown just because he's Scottish. Or haggis, just because it's Scottish.

For the record, I like haggis but Brown's a dick.

Hmm

They play quite a lot of Fratellis and stuff on American indie radio. I think, to an extent, Americans are also less critical of British music, because it's exotic or something. I don't know. Maybe we do the same with American music - Panic At The Disco and Fall Out Boy and stuff. Both bands, I think, have had pretty good reviews on here, but really, they're just the American equivalents of The Fratellis, Razorlight, etc, etc.

So basically, the only music that gets criticised is American (by other Americans), and everything else gets universal praise.

Oh fuck, Panic At The Disco is American?!

reason no. 562 to be ashamed that I'm American! I already knew about Fall Out Boy, I'm still sick about such turds being from my homeland and had to steal their studid moniker from one of my all time favorite sipsons episodes.

and the dick bass player has a signature Squire Bass, fuck, what a stupid world.

oh god, he's right!

I hate being American, I have deep shame over it and I am ashamed of my President- But I am very PROUD of those feelings and consider myself lucky to be able to say it openly. We are working on things, going to vote for a lovely black and white man in November. I have wanted a female prez for decades but fuck no on Hilary.

Back to music and the American propensity to block British rock. I don't see it. In fact most Americans will (intitially) give British music the nod but if it sucks- it's going down. I do remember some NYC friends of mine in the 70's hating "that fag David Bowie for trying to turn Lou Reed into a fag" (I worship Bowie, that's how I discoverd Lou Reed) but I have never heard anyone say if it's British; it's gotta suck or show any American nationalistic preference to music with the exception of redneck types and they just don't count.

Truth of the matter, I have felt a certain pride when I discover that some band I like actually is American- yeah, there's that, but that is not (god I'm getting sick of this word) prejudiced.

it's not profound

it's EMOTIONAL. durr.
i dunno, i just like how his voice has lots of great little cracks and inflections while still being very melodic.

but i don't quite follow the last part. you could say that about any of the hyped british bands of the moment, surely? it's not like they're getting THAT much attention in comparison to others.
UR JUST RACIST AGAINST THE SCOTTISH LOLZ

1. Johnny Foreigner

2. White Rabbit? I can't think of many other British bands people are paying attention to at the moment. I know people on the forums talk about Dananananaykroyd and Copy Haho and stuff, but they don't get anywhere near as much attention in the (I don't really know what to call it) alternative press.

um

foals? broken records? los campesinos? or are they, like, last month's news now? i'm so un-hip.

anyway, i don't really know. i don't pay a massive amount of attention to the music press in general, so maybe i'm wrong. but i can say with confidence that i personally have no interest in the idea of a 'great british band to cling onto', or whatever. i can't speak for everyone else.

YEAH, OKAY

I'll give you Foals and Los Campesinos!. But they're shit too.

ok

Granted there may be a few weak lyrics. But surely they're outweighed by things like

"Well we can change our partners,
this is a progressive dance, but
remember it was me who
dragged you up to the sweaty floor."

No....?

Really, no

Well

you're really doing a good job of backing up your argument here.

the lyrics are fantastic

the music is fantastic

there wont be a backlash, so give up now.

I read Watership Down

that's my fill of scared bunnies

hey whilst the cringeworthyness of the lyrics is debated

walkingwithwolves is enjoying frightened rabbits.

I think that's funny.

hey, why is that funny?

p.s. i'm still playing them now.

I thought it funny cause

here they are^^^^^^

and there you are just enjoying your music.

see?

i guess.

i just like the band. :)

I know, I could tell

you liked them in the face of gross disdain- that makes me want to check out frightened rabbit- even though I'm scarred for life by "Watership Down".

Have you heard "The Tragic Treasury (A Series Of Unfortunate Tales) by The Gothic Archies?

no, i haven't!

but i didn't really like a series of unfortunate events (the books) to be honest. and the film was even worse.
frightened rabbit are good, and despite zapsta's argument about how people rave on about british bands, i actually thought they were american until they mentioned scotland when i went to see them.
says a lot about my stupidness/lack of knowledge.

I mentioned The Gothic Archies

Cause you posted on my The Magnetic Fields thread.

GA is a Stephin Merrit band- you'll love it!

to wit:

"Walking My Gargoyle"

"We Are The Gothic Archies"

it is cherishworthy.

oh thank you!

i didn't know that. i will check them out, i really like the 6th, although they're quite hard to get hold of.
and you're right: i WILL love it.

Swell ( let me know )but Just so you'll know in advance

Gothic Archie t-shirts are NOT available.

When you listen to "We Are The Gothic Archies" you'll know what I mean.

zapsta

i must agree with you. i like that one song, the one that sounds very snow patrol/MOR but the rest of them are just :\

Zapsta,

Are you a Masochist?

Or

A Modern Leper on his last leg?

Oh, come on. They're brilliant!

A little bedwettery in places, maybe ... but:

"If we've both got the same diseases it's irrelevant, girl"

is a top line.

I am still unsure of this Band!

I managed to catch them at the GRV rooms in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago And tbh I was not impressed with the material at all. One thing that annoyed me Was that they did not seem to have the drive to put on a good show (My opinion)On that said night and the GRV was packed with anticipation of there performance. And they kind of seemed disinterested by the attention and played a rather dull set.

They are ok! But not a patch on there lablemates The Twilight Sad

ban request

you're so wrong it hurts. your face is made out of just plain wrong, your very essence is the wrongness of wrongitude

wrong wrong wrong

FAIL

Snow Patrol with more effin' and blindin'

I'll stick with The Twilight Sad.

they are nothing like each other

FR are a bit like Snow Patrol on their first two albums. this is a good thing mind

srsly, how could you complain about the lyrics

when lyrics are completely extraneous for 90% of the other bands that get mentioned on here

i dont even like them that much. i saw them live. they were alright.

I agree with everything Zapsta says

always. With the exception of anything positive about Johnny Foreigner/

Plus the actual music/instrumentation is really boring as well.

What's wrong with JoFo? :(

I agree with you about the music, but I thought it was too nondescript to start a thread about.

This band will be very popular on this site Zapsta

because they play middle of the road bland indie music

Go on then, I'll bite.

Which achingly niche hipster bands do you listen to in order to curl up foetally at night and sleep secure in the knowledge that your elitism will always keep you warm?

I dont like hip or scene bands

these are the bands I like the most
The Fall
The Stooges
The Beach Boys
and soul records

I have bought this Frightened Rabbits cd its just ok and if that is acceptable then pleasse listen on.

Ahh so you're an OLDSKOOL elitist.

The most insidious kind!

I don't think anyone was claiming it was.

That'd be somewhat ridiculous. But what it is is a very good album filled with emotional intelligent lyrics and a firebrand indie style that harkens back to about ten or eleven years ago. For me, Frightened Rabbit feel like a rather pleasant amalgamation of Arab Strap's confessional fearlessness and Idlewild's middle-period vigor and momentum. I think it's a winning combination.

I just don't understand people who make threads on DiS just to say they don't like a band - it's shit-stirring, pure and simple.

not really

this is a discussion board. i disagree with elasticman and found that post a bit laughable, and also disagree with Zapsta's posts, but its their opinion

A fair point

you are correct it's all to easy to get into negativity that really doesn't held anyone. Point take on board.

i hadn't even heard of them

before this thread but clearly they're getting pretty big, Hype Machine is crawling with their tracks.

Anyway, I think they're quite good, based on listening to 3 songs. Worth investigating further, at the very least.

Hmmm,

unnecessary argument, the lyrics are perfectly fine and so is the music.

Stooopiiddddd.

actually

they're VERY good.

Thanks Zapsta! :D

they're playing a free acoustic gig

at the Captains Rest in Glasgow tonight, cannae wait!

oh, sick burn

poor zappy
