Jesus Christ

the art one is a perfectly acceptable debate. This is fucking lame.

2nd that

and thirded.

no it's not

it's a fucking lame debate that has been done to death.

lame?

so john cage, say... or someone tapping a triangle every ten minutes.. music?

it's the same debate isn't it?

ie a pointless one

and given it's gaygereva, it really is very lame

No, as with art

there is a perfectly understandable argument on either side. Philosophical questions and a history of debate, as noted above.

Here irs obvious. Its music, or its a sound.

I just punched you in the face. Its a sound.

If I punched you repeatedly and rhythmically in the face. Its music.

Music is the one sphere of art where deconstructionist theory holds no water in my view.

Yes, I realise I'm debating. But I think that's it, open and shut.

whaqqt bout proper atonal 'noise' bands

isn't that a form of music, even if it's anti-music in a way?

Yes it is.

As there is a degree of composition.

Nope, see the original link.

There is clearly no degree of composition. That's the point.

But he's talking about atonal noise bands here...

I can't access myspace so can't comment on that.

But composition itself isn't definable surely? If you were in a noise band and you said, 'right, let's just make a load of noisy shit up' that's you composing a way of making music. Ditto random unconnected noises.

Oh dear,

I don't know what came over me there. In answer to your question:

music is a room full of musical instruments.

And yes.

yeah it was

yer just backtracking now..

the guy with the long hair and glasses

is a student/ex student? of a guy i used to play in a band with. He teaches film in Wycombe, ya see.

Nice guy, and indeed a small world.

I've spent 15 minutes

conducting numerous unsuccesful image searches for Paul Ince with a musical instrument.

I suffer for my art.

^LOL

:D:D:D

Of course it isn't.,

I saw a band Brainlove put on last year possibly called the insects who dressed as a load of insects and wandered around a set of instruments on stage making noises by chance when they happened to bump into them.

It was an interesting performance experiment and was certainly art but I wouldn't have called it music.

bit if they said it was music?

would it be?

I'd have disagreed with them.

But then obviously my opinion isn't final.

Certainyl I wouldn't say that just 'cos they said it was music (or just 'cos someone who aspired to be an artist said something was art going back to the other thread) that would necessarily mean it was the case.

I sincerely hope you didn't

have to pay to see this

It was an all-dayer and there were about 10 acts on.

Others of whom I wanted to see. So I didn't directly pay.

To be honest it was one of these things where you spent a minute or so thinking "this is quite an interesting concept" but once you realised there was no more to it than the concept itself it didn't really sustain your attention.

insectoid

if i listened to them on record i'd call it music. live not so much. enjoyed it tho

Nothing constitutes music

look at stockhuasen.

Music

is organised sound.

If there's no agreed definition for a word

it's futile arguing what that definition "really is".

see i dont know why this has turned into a controversy

horse vomit have played gigs in art galleries

's been done

a quote

"sound which comes from silence, is music"
