how well do you think you can know someone you've never met?

Personally, I would say: NOT AT ALL. I've met people from the internet and they've been weird in real life. Have met people and thought they were amazing, but partly because they turned out not to be mental. I have proper friends that go on the internet and I think they're really cool.

How does it work for you?

Why do you think you 'know' someone you've never met?

so do you

but I don't think I know you

There are things I LIKE about your internet persona, but I wouldn't be disappointed if in real life you weren't as funny or contradictory as you are on the internet

Contradictory?

Like a paradox or just contrary?

yes, contrary

that's what i meant.

ha, you've been contradictory again

I did this online quiz once

which told me which book I "was", and it said I was Catch 22 because I'm full of contradictions. It also said I was a pacifist though, so maybe it wasn't that accurate. Anyway, I'm exactly the same in real life; I'm sure whiterussian will tell you soon.

...

"You're Catch-22!
by Joseph Heller
Incredibly witty and funny, you have a taste for irony in all that you see. It seems that life has put you in perpetually untenable situations, and your sense of humor is all that gets you through them. These experiences have also made you an ardent pacifist, though you present your message with tongue sewn into cheek. You could coin a phrase that replaces the word "paradox" for millions of people."

I like that.

i looked it up

i was Watership Down. now i really *really* want to read that.

everyone do this please ^

i want to know what books you are.

no i won't

:'(

i thought you'd be scarier

for some reason

i don't think you did

but you know, people in general are pretty scary

No, I did

You told me once, "You scare me".

REALLY?

when was this?

Couple of months ago

Just before you started doing that "You'll never find anyone with that attitude" thing.

i only did that a couple of times

and you were all whiney about it so i stopped. but really, did you do/say anything in particular that scared me? cause i honestly don't remember

I've no idea

What made you think I'd be scary today?

oh ok

and again i don't really know, but it was funny that you thought we were scary though.

this puts a lot of things into perspective!

i am joking. although i'm not sure that even counts as a joke.

Nope, not really a joke

It does put a lot of things into perspective. I'm going to bed now. Night night. Nice to meet you x

oh man

do i feel stupid now (answer: yes.)

night x

yes actually

Awesome

Night! x

absolutely no-one

I actually liked every single person I met, but I only met:

jonny_rat
klaire
bamos

and the rest of them I had met before

Ahhhh, okay.

Are you gracing Zonino 3.5 with your presence?

Alternatively, Latitude or Field Day?

field day

but i have to remind myself to get a ticket

Latitude - maybe? A couple of friends are going, but I'm not into camping. All my rock cred disappeared with that.

What about you, young Alex?

come and say hi to me at field day

if you go </nerd>

Z 3.5, Latitude and Field Day!

See you at one or other of them then.

oh and sadpunk

who was kind of hot

Are you going to send me your bank account details or what?

Yours,

Brigadier General Dr Johnson Akumimbo
General Secretary
First Lagos Commercial Bank
Nigeria

not to well really

you can get an idea, but there is nothing like a face to face meeting.

I've met peeps from the net who have been ace... in fact I haven't met some one from the 'tinter net that wasn't well nice. But I haven't met loads so I guess I'm lucky.

not very well

sometimes, you can know a lot about someone. but it's not the same as knowing them. not even in the biblical sense.

You don't know them at all

well, it's more like overhearing conversations knowing. I've said this before- people who I get along with on the internet = no speaking in reality, people I get along with in reality = absolute crap on the internet. I would say I'm pretty much the same in reality (probablly because I've been on the internet since 2003) but most/some people are wildly different.

:D

Only dis since june 2006
A wide array of other, pretty terrible sites filled with weirdos before that

2007 rather

I had no internet for a year as well from about 2005-6, or I don't actually know when.

I would go on in the local library

it was well cool!1 Especially as you basically have a crowd of people peering over your shoulder to see what you're doing.

God

Compared to other forums I've been a member of over the past half a decade, this place really is a haven.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

can't say this enough

But these ones are lovely

The clientele here is a massive step above those who frequent gaming forums.

*shudder*

As did I

I'm very much in the freak & geek camp, myself.

But really, there are those out there who you could call freaks and/or geeks and who really shouldn't be allowed on a computer. Nor within 100 feet of women.

I've met a fair few people over the years I 'met' online first

Usually, they're very similar to how they are in real life. The only difference is the loud and wacky ones tend to be quite quiet and reserved, but most people type as they speak for the most part... but it is only ever a rough picture until you meet them, of course.

i definitely don't type how i talk

i think i come across like i'm really overexcited all the time and speak rapidly. but in reality, i speak really slowly and mumble a lot.

It depends what you mean by "know"

I think people can become quite predictable by their actions on the internet. Does that mean I know them? Sometimes people will be completely different IRL to how I expected them to be, but that doesn't mean the opinions I've gained from their online activity is rendered void.

i agree, you can't really know them at all

until you meet up with them. Knowing someone isn't just about what they say or write on an internet forum, its seeing their reactions to things, how they converse with you IRL...all manner of tiny things which are hard to explain...it's the small details rather than the more obvious traits, basically.

People on the internet can in a way be whoever they want. Some people who feel they can't be so forthright and full on in real life may be a bit more opinionated on a messageboard for example.

this for me is why the Mirri/Vikram thing is so ridiculous.

Or, even better

Remember that Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan vehicle, "You've Got Mail", where two rival business types don't realise they've been having an online affair for the past year?

Imagine that happening here. It would be incredible.

:D

Mirri/Vikram cyber saga!

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo awesome

^this^

I mean no one in real life shouts this and points in the air do they? do they realy? hmmm? no.

i create an upward pointing arrow with my hands

and say "this" to points my friends make that i agree on.

cool

some times I have shouted WTF! just cos it sounds stupid in real life. But I try not to do that as I would sound like a fool.

no one says "lol" either

i've never heard anyone say it! is it L.O.L pronounced Ell - Oh - Ell, or lol prounounced, er, "lol"?

The voice in my head says it's the latter.

i think it's supposed to be the former

but most people say the latter.

^ you go to bed awfully late

and get up awfully early. i don't trust people who don't like sleep.

I have known people

to say 'lol' it makesme cringe

You can know things about them..

..but only vaguely, I would imagine you'd be surprised at certain behaviours of these people in real life.

I want to meet a DiSer. ;(

i think i act on here pretty much how i do in person.

Only my face doesn't look like this:

=)

or this

:P

Mine is a bit like this :wdwgc

only not that pretty

I'm not allowed in Topman any more

There was...unpleasantness

I actually bought some jeans and a sweater

from Topman last week. They had put all the normal people, non-day glo garments in one corner and herded the me and all the other ugly people towards it
