They were a definite grower for me. There's never been a better song written than 'Slow Show', and 'Lit Up' isn't far behind. Absolutely unrivalled beautiful music.
i did it too. I knew Lit Up for some reason (i guess it was on the radio a bit) and only really took note one day when Secret Meeting was on the radio...
I saw them on Jools a few years back (must've been shortly after Alligator came out) and thought it was alright. I tended to check out the stuff that was on there anyway, so downloaded it, listened once, thought it was a bit 'meh' and left it alone.
Then just over a year ago I was round a friend's house and they put on Looking For Astronauts, and it was a lot better than I remembered. Then I went home and listened to Alligator about 40 times over the next week.
I really don't know how anyone couldn't like The National.

they've taken a while
but after a few months of listening Alligator smacked me in the chops one day, can't get enought of it now !
That's it.
I'm on Napster now, which album do I get?
I've been meaning to check them out for too long.
You've opened the flood gates with this one

Watch the aligators and the boxers slug it out. Acutally in a real fight the aligator would win...
I've never, ever heard them.
Just pick something, are they all quite similar?
fuck it, go for alligator...
for chronology's sake if nothing else... they are both decent.
Done.
I'll get Boxer as well if I like this one.
Secret Meeting
still hasnt been replaced as my favourite National song.
*hasn't
The apostrophe key on my keyboard is broken. Forgive me
this is the song I put on compilations
when I need a National song
I've no problem with gays, though i could never be one.
Unless The National said they wouldn't make another album unless i sucked them off.
i started loving them
after i saw them live.
this^^
Alligator submillinally took over my life.
Although my good friend loved it imediately.. but that was after two years of me going "have you heard The National yet?"
Boxer
I love, Alligator I have just got am an about to give it a whirl!
i had the same thing with my friend
he sent be abel about a year before we saw them and i was like.. "meh".
i sicken me.
haha to be fair

Lit Up was the first song I heard too

I love them too much now.
I would like to point out
that although I said Alligator in the original post, I meant The Boxer
I still love both albums
Guest Room is massively underrated too, what a great song.
Who are they?
When the inevitable
best album of the 00s threads get into full swing in about 18 months from now it will be very unlikely Alligator won't be top of my list.
The problem is..
..only half of their songs are good and the singers a knob.
urr
how did you get to that conclusion
have you met him?
i thought he was about as sincere as they come
I'm guessing i know you as well as you
know matt berringer. and you're a knob
