given his virulent hate of the Catholic Church, that Chick buys into that aids viruses passing through the condom bullshit, I thought pretty much only the Catholic church thought that.
Well, it's not just the Catholic Church that thinks that
It's a view held by a large part of the Christian evangelical community in the States, and is one of the core arguments they have for only allowing abstinence sex education in schools (which, as we all know, is the worst thing they could do if they genuinely wanted to lower STD numbers and teen pregnancy rates).
Unfortunately, though, the Catholic Chuch has far more sway over Christian attitudes worldwide (especially in Africa), so when they proclaim condoms useless it has more of an effect than The Southern Baptist Church Of Missouri does.

If you tell kids lots of things are real that have absolutely no evidence to back them up, then when it comes down to it they're going to be less likely to believe the "right" unverifiabble thing is real and the other stuff is false in later life, leading to a destruction of civilization etc. etc.
