Elbow - are they an old geezers band?

Given that most DISers are quite a bit younger than me I wondered how Elbow are rated on here?

I'm well over the hill and they bore me senseless.

It's all subjective obviously but I'm having trouble imagining you fresh young things getting a boner over this band.

So?

You have to see them live

to really understand what they are capable of. Outstanding stuff.

I don't think I could bear to see them live.

They really, really bore me. I've been listening to them the last couple of days to try and 'get it'.

Anyway, I'm not saying they're rubbish -that's not what this query of sorts is about. I just wondered if most people that dig them are getting on a bit.

I feel similarly -

I don't hate their music, but they're not exciting enough to get my motor running, as it were. I know people who are converts after seeing them live, but having seen them myself, I still can't get it. They're not drab - the songs are nice enough and well crafted. Perhaps that's the problem for me.

Apparently they're Very Nice People though.

Agree.

i love them

guy has a beautiful voice with sweet soothing lyrics and they are clever musicians too. but i'm too tired after ATP to talk about things properly

Well, I am older than you

and I like them. Their return song was one of the best I have heard recently. So yes they are dad rock. At least they are not dad rock in their 20s like the Kaiser Chiefs are though. Jesus, I hate that band.

I love Elbow.

I'm 18.

Guy Garvey is one of my favourite lyracists/singers, so very beautiful.

This is what I'm after, more ages so that I can

create a spreadsheet and get some funding for my research.

i've loved them since i was 14/15

and i am a girl! every time i've seen them though i've mostly felt like the youngest person in the room. but i think they are amazing and guy garvey is a genius

^This

...though I'm not a girl...and I've never seen them...but I *have* loved them since I was about fourteen.

Music that beautiful doesn't have an age limit.

I think they are one of the greatest and most underappreciated

bands this decade by far.

Simply amazing. A perfect back catalogue.

I think they are getting far less underappreciated now

which should please you.

It will.

:)

i love elbow and im 20

his voice is beautiful.they havent released a bad album yet.you cant say that about many bands i dont think

Age is irrelevant.

Elbow are fucking magnificent.

ha

no, they are super duper. Guy Garvey is a wonderful lyricist.

I'm 35

which by "on here" standards means old.

I love them to bits... it's just a case of what they do, they do really well. There are a lot of other bands in what you could POSSIBLY call the same 'genre' that bore me to tears. Two things set them apart for me:

1) Guy Garvey. His voice for one, plus the fact that he writes pretty much the best lyrics of anyone I can think of. Oh, and he's a funny bugger to boot, which isn't essential, but it certainly helps the live shows.
2) The band. They understand dynamics more than just about any other band I can think of. It's so far removed from standard singer-songwriterly plod that I don't know how people could ever lump them in with that sort of thing...

...

3) See 1 and 2.

So, quite a bit of love from the under 25s.

And no haters. Impressive.

I've given up on them now and replaced their cd with Cats and Cats and Cats.

Im 24....

used to be really into them for the 1st and 2nd albums, then found the 3rd quite dull and havent even bothered to check out the new stuff.

The new single(s) are rubbish though i though.

One of the best bands...

...of the last decade, if not THE best. I've never been so close to tears at a gig than when i saw them at Manchester Academy just after Cast of Thousands was released. I felt like a bit of an idiot til i turned around and saw a couple of me mates blubbering into their pint glasses.

They seem to have that power to turn usually macho blokes into shivering wrecks.

Utterly mesemerising.

I'm 25, for your research.

they boar me sensless i'm affraid

I'm sure they are brilliant though so I'm told hehe.

was not too keen on them

based on Powder Blue when it was on Radio 1 but was ok with a couple of other bits on the first album, then saw them at Eden Sessions with PJ Harvey and was smitten, they were amazing, so was a fan from Cast of Thousands onwards.

Admittedly they do have their MOR moments but for the best part I find them unnervingly emotive. At the core I guess they aren't doing anything that removed from Coldplay et al but the way they do it is just so much better. I think the critics have already panned them as 'almost rans' due to lack of commercial success I guess...

Can't stand his voice

and find their music dull. Will be avoiding them at Latitude.

I'm 20.

I absolutely love them, and have done since the first album. One of the best live acts i've ever seen too.

I rather dislike them

and am only 22. If that helps.

Yes, this is what I need really.

I need more young people who don't really like them so that my research ultimately upholds my initial prejudice.
