Cue a ton of responses

from people arguing over what is and what is not Math Rock...

The obvious answer would be -
If you like Battles, check out Don Caballero.

and also

Steve Reich

Drive like jehu??

Thats Math Rock, Right??

American Don

is probably the most Battles-y (in the sense that it uses loops pretty much all the time).

alot of stuf on Warp

is kinda future style madness.... Pivot could be good for ya. No idea what Math rock is really there was a good artical on it on here a while back.

If you like Mirrored...

...I'd suggest Standards by Tortoise. I was listening to this again recently and was struck how similar in tone and feel it is in places.

Not sure if they are Math Rock or not

but Tortoise is a great shout. If you can find "Millions Now Living Will Never Die", have a listen - it's great.

I agree more people should listen to Tortoise

I would never have called them math, but they are fantastic. And too often overlooked these days, it seems...

the edmund fitzgerald

they released a split single on some crappy little label with youthmovies a while back, and have a comp. coming out on some different label soon...

Mathy bands

All very different but all worth a listen, in my opinion:

65daysofstatic
Giraffes? Giraffes!
This Town Needs Guns
Faraquet
Pele
Piglet
The 90 day men

^ This Town Needs Guns are too fucking good

As are Maps And Atlases, who you definitely check out if you like TTNG.

Giraffes? Giraffes!

are so fucking good!

^ This

Very good, informative article

*goes to read it again*

^

i always thought

dismemberment plan were fun in that kinda way. and pretty girls make graves and q and not u.
not that anybody ever really described those bands as math rock.

also, dillinger escape plan.

if you like mathy stuff, check out psyopus

you'll just adore them

As someone else mentioned.

The new Pivot stuff is pretty good. They were good at the ICA the other week.

maps and atlases

nothing like battles but very good

Maps and Atlases

Hate being called Math Rock. My band did a song with them recently and they despise the term.

type 'math rock'

into the last.fm tag search and you get a rid good mix.

Not commenting on any band in particular but

NO TIME SIGNATURES = NOT MATH ROCK.

Doesn't matter what they sound like or whether they use polyrythyms...

are hella math rock?

hella are excellent.

Believe it or not

70's Genesis has some math rock elements.

(Not saying I like Genesis)

^ very much this

The mathy elements in Youthmovies' recent album are very much influenced by 70s Genesis.

wut?

do the math...

Well this is for me a great sub genre, but its becoming cringe worthy now days, considering this made and played best about 10-15 years ago!!!

Essential Math (ewww shower!) bands for future reference...

Don Caballero
Hella
Volta Do Mar
Sleeping People / Rumah Sakit
US Maple
Piglet
Minus the Bear
San Luis Obispo
Biblical Proof of UFO's
Drive Like Jehu (sometimes???)
Oxxxes
You! Fantastic

then there is loads of bands related to other bands that were placed with the term 'math' back in the day.

Slint
Rodan
June of 44
Sweep the Leg Johnny
Polvo
Dazzling Killmen...

fuck, there are loads...just anything GOOD and 90's..touch & go

Mathy bands you may want to look into.

65daysofstatic
Don Caballero
Sweep The Leg Johnny
Yourcodenameis:milo
Minus The Bear
Hella
Youthmovies

And heavier stuff (if you're into that) that is sometimes called Mathcore check out:

Converge
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Botch
Meshuggah

There are also many post-rock bands like Mono and Godspeed You! Black Emperor that use "mathy" time signatures, there's lots of different stuff out there.

Hold your horse is

By Hella. Yum.

And what's more...

¡Forward, Russia! are a good shout for math-rock, especially their latest offering, 'Life Processes'.
cats and cats and cats are good too.
I wouldn't say much post-rock was math-y, apart from A Silver Mt. Zion maybe

hi.

PIGLET
Sleeping People
Pele
Dakota / Dakota
Burn Rome in a Dream
Rumah Sakit
Tenebre - full tracks on http://www.last.fm/music/Tenebre
