It's kind of like the yeah or meh "band everone loves" thread.
Give us a "genius" we can hail or nail.
Reply
The "Floored Genius" Julian Cope
.
Here are some
William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Rene Descartes, Socrates.
Those are the best I can do off the top of my head, but if I think of others I'll let you know.
Newton - pretty overrated?
His earlier stuff
was definitely much better.
I don't know
What are you basing the idea that he was overrated on?
Newton is not the greatest scientist ever, but was a true original with passion and innovative ideas.
I thought of another: Leonardo Da Vinci
I meant MUSICAL geniuses
not MUCUSAL geniuses
Cliff Burton
I think i love him just a little too much
David Bowie
The Beatles
Lee "Scratch" Perry
He went mad and burnt his studio down. Going mad usually hints at genius. See also: Brian Wilson, Syd Barratt, Gazza, etc.
Phil Spektor
lee perry?
'
pioneer of the point and click method
I always thought the "wall of sound" was idiotic in the age of stereo
and he's got bad taste in clothes. John Lennon thought he was a genius- takes one to know one?
Frank Zappa
= Genius
Jimmy Nail
John Lennon
Hank Williams
Sufjan Stevens
hail or jimmy?
Obvious but...
Brian Wilson
I predict this one will cause massive arguments
but nobody can argue with Stevie Wonder.
not Stevie Woner, just this thread in general btw
Christ, Stevie WONDER
that's the worst sequence of posts in the history of my time here.
Hendrix as well.
^lol
^yea
dont be so hard on yourself
Jeff Mangum
ive climbed back down off the roof now,
thanks
Poetically, not musically.
indierific
the fact reminds that 80% of what he wrote was absolute shit though
his chords were simple,
doesnt mean his music wasnt innovative.
:(
Jake Thackray
And I only discovered him today.
^ wrong
ha!
wrong to me saying Thackray or Mangum?
Innovation doesn't have to equate to genius.
Paul McCartney
or too obvious? My mum's obsessed with Ecce Cor Meum (the classical thing he did) and I must say I quite like it,a lthough it took him years to put together because he can't read or write music.
.
Kate Bush
Julian Cope
not really
if you consider everything that isnt on avery or in the aeroplane. even a lot of avery island is a bit...sub par
Newton Faulkner
you super morons
neil
young
hails for John and Hank
I don't know Sufjan well enough to judge. His orchestral gigs and costumery is definitely clever.
OR DOES IT?!
novelty fringe coats
sorry
Depends what how you class 'genius'
but my vote goes to Tom Waits.
Frank Sidebottom
hail
but wait, he does need to collaborate with a lyricist.
nah
a hardy hail!
He is a genius just for his "Lee Baby Simms" character
Steven Stapleton
monster genius!
Richard Feynman
Surely!
Richard D James
Jerry Dammers
Personally
Josh Davis (aka Dj Shadow) is a genius in my eyes as well as a contiual source of inspiration.
Actually Newton was a bit of a nutter
he was obsessed by a lot of totally unscientific numerology and quasi-religious mystical theories (about the number 7 and the layout of buildings in Jerusalem and stuff)and this severly skewed a lot of his work.
are you the guy who started the 'why does
no-one talk about Stevie Wonder' Thread a while ago? If not then there's two of you Wonder-lovers roaming these boards and you guys should hook up.
Frank Sidebottom looks cool
Is there a dvd or something?
No....
you'll only find some antiquated YouTube clips and some bargain bin albums.
nutters are big in genius land
My gosh, name me one genius who wasn't saving their urine or talking to lamp posts.
ha
I'm sure there has been a few geniuses who were/are normal by social standards.
You know how Einstein got bad grades as a kid?
well mine are EVEN WORSE.
jeff Buckley
Genius or Natural Wonder?
Angus Young
Genius or Natural Wonder?
Pete Townshend
.
Marc Bolan
.
Coltrane
Miles Davis
NO.
That's what I thought you meant.
Why was he not a musical genius then?
john cage
& thurston moore.
.
What I find so affecting about Mangum is that the lyrics are so complex and beautiful but are over, sometimes, rudimentary music. For instance, Two Headed Boy is a great song but I have no idea how you could class it genius.
On In The Aeroplane...(my favourite song btw) Mangum wouldn't have been able to make it so heartbreaking yet optimistic without the input of the rest of the band. NMH is collective genius, not individual.
^this
for goodness sake
Nick Cave
Regina Spektor
Bob Dylan obviously
And Thom Yorke ¬ ¬
P.S.: Elliott Smith
And QUITE POSSIBLY!!! QUITE POSSIBLY! Conor Oberst. I haven't decided on that last one yet.
That should say almost* rudimentary.
Just 'rudimentary' would be a piss take.
wasn't me.
but thanks for the thought. x
Leonard Cohen.
Prince...
Prince, Prince, Prince
what's the implication here?
My parents used to jump for joy when I brought home report cards that were devoid of failing grade- "Wow honey, not one single "F"!"
cocker...
jarvis not joe that is.
thompson...hunter s.
M. Gira
.
Tim Hardin

point understood.

I HATE THIS THREAD
mee too, hee, hee, hoo
thanks
: (
yup
I was desparate for a non- twee_loser thread
not really, I like his threads and I like douchebag bags "o" fun too. I know proclaiming "genius" without proper testing and documentation is farcical and an idiotic waste of braincells (oh what irony) but I did it and I appologize- at least I didn't ask the question: Are there more male of female geniuses in music? And why?
Jelly Roll Morton
Ralf Hütter
nope,
he is a stone cold genius. i could class two headed boy as genius no worries.
^this
...but it's all subjective, really.
Finding a definitive genius list is an impossible task :(
because women have held a much more auxiliary role in music
for most of its history. Up until the mid sixties there were no "female artists" really, there were people who sang songs and people who were involved but very few singular "artists". And even when women got a more prominent role they were overwhelmed by male creators, and have been to this day, even despite the more recent sexual revolutions which have left men subjucated to women
I think music has just been a bit of a Boy's Club since day one
don't start goddamnit!
It was a joke question ya douchebag
: )
ps - in the interest of peace i can't reply to your answer which i must say is worthy of one.
sorry
i don't think
lennon or mccartney were genius on their own... more of a collective genius thing no?
;)
Lyrically, not musically..
bowie
sucks
Definite geniuses in my book
Johnny Marr
Bernard Butler
David Bowie
Nick Cave
Prince
Andrew Eldritch
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
