I've been listening to Nick Drake, Bon Iver, Stephen Fretwell, Mechanical Birds, Jonquil & Microphones all day. Stuff of the same ilk if you can. Danke.

Not sure if you have heard it

but Yeasayers album is pretty beautiful.

hhmhmmmmmm...

The Sleeping Years ?
Songdog ?

I've heard both of those.

Sleeping Years is pretty brilliant. Songdog, well it's not really made a great impression yet, but i'll give it another whirl, only really listened to it twice.

<3 microphones

elliott smith
sufjan
eagleowl
then thickens

And if you like Elliott...

Check out my friend Cosmo. He has some brilliant tracks.

Phil Campbell

I actually know this guy personally, and his record is amazing... Check him out www.myspace.com/philcampbellmusic

His single Maps is great and the album track "After The Garden" is breath taking.

ooh I love him too

I've been following him for years, since my ex worked at EMI and had stuff to do with him. I still listen to Fresh New Life, its actually one of my favourite albums ever. Its such a shame he seems to teeter on the brink of getting better known.

Tornado Blues

Yah, that's Phil for ya. He actually just gave me a copy of an album he made called Tornado Blues. It is not at all radio friendly, and thus not label friendly, but it is amazing! I am trying to get him to put it up somewhere, like PureVolume...

if you feel like sharing it...

...send me a note :-)

Boards

Of

Shady Bard

www.shadybard.co.uk they also have a myspace

M83 - Saturdays = Youth

I think thats it s name anyhow.
Gazing out of the aeroplane window and you contemplate your insignificance.

early leonard cohen

amazing

...

Presume you have the first Iron & Wine album?

Got any Fairport Convention - go for 'the history of' - pretty good best of collection.

Sandy Denny - 'Sandy'.

Papa M - Whatever, Mortal. Beautiful, front porch hushed folk/country album.

I too love that Jonquil album. I couldn't get in to The Microphones but it's a few years since I heard them. I'm going to go back and listen to them as I know Jonquil have been likened to them. I'd also say that Grizzly Bear album but I didn't think it was anything special myself. I know it's quite highly thought of in the blogosphere.

yes to

Papa M. Also see Live From A Shark Cage, or whatever its called.

...

Why do you need more of the same crap?

One man's crap...

Is another man's fertilizer.

fuck off, Stealthy.

i'll kick your arse, boy.

...

With your tears?

definitely

"Revenge Songs", by Jacob Golden. I know I can't shut up about him, but seriously. I think you'll love it.

Bill ryder jones

Check out Bill from the Coral.... his solo stuff is stunning.

www.myspace.com/billryderjones

Paris Motel

Their album "In The Salpetriere" is loverly. Imagine classical chamber music with a backbeat and gorgeous wistful vocals and you're halfway there.

Caribou

That's what I've been listening to today.

sufjan stevens fo shizzle

radical face less bizzle

Nina Nastasia

I want to say Holly Miranda as well

but there isn't much to listen to: http://www.myspace.com/hollymirandahollymiranda

And maybe Jason Molina? His stuff is generally more heart-wrenching than beautiful, though.

Actually, please listen to Holly Miranda

All of you. The cover of Elliott Smith's 'Between the Bars' she does with Scott Matthew (not Scott Matthews) is absolutely stunningly beautiful.

Songs: Ohia!

Palace Music
Adrian Orange/Thanksgiving

Songs of Green Pheasant

Could be your cup of tea. Some really nice moments on the album I have by them.

I'd never heard of him,

but after a quick skim read I am looking forward to getting home and hearing it.

Off the top of my head

City And Colour's album Sometimes

This Is The Kit http://www.myspace.com/thisisthekit

The Sleepy Jackson - Lovers or Personality... are both sunshiney loveliness

definitely Sleepy Jackson - Lovers

Also

The Kingsbury Manx - Let You Down
Colin Blustone - One Year
Nada Surf - Let Go
Loney, Dear - Loney, Noir
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
The New Amsterdams - Kill or Cured

Good call on Deserter's Songs

Rev's All Is Dream is a shout too

if you want sad beauty...

Denison Witmer - safe away
Damien Jurado - on my way to absence/ and now that i'm in your shadow
owen - self titled
very secretary - standing in the shade
rocky votolato - self titled

one answer

Marissa Nadler.

or two

Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home

Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme

The most quiet, intricate and pretty album I've heard. Simon & Garfunkel btw.

Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D major

As played by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by von Karajan.

All other versions pale into insignificance.

I used to hurt my ears listening to this on my headphones when I was younger. Flawed logic: turning up volume allows you to hear the bits in the background better.

Mumford and Sons

Yah, so I just made a post about them, but I think you would like... Although they only have 2 songs.

http://www.myspace.com/mumfordandsons

Wintersleep

"Welcome To The Night Sky"?

Boards Of Canada

specifically;

'roygbiv'
'a beautiful place in the country'
'dayvan cowboy'
'tears from the compound eye'
'1969'
'buckie high'

Wow.

the shearwater album

called 'rook' is very beautiful

maybe?

Good call though. Also see July Skies if you like that pastoral sound.

I'll second the Songs Of Green Pheasant rec, i think he's awesome, kind of like an abstract, ambient Simon & Garfunkel.

How has no one

said Sigur Ros yet?

() wins this thread.

...

All I can think of at the moment is Eluvium, his stuff is utterly gorgeous. Everything else I would've said has already been suggested.

Kudos for The Microphones though, listen to Mount Eerie as well if you haven't!

Dion

"Born to be With You"

Phil Spector is all over it

Fleet Foxes

I heard this band for the first time on Monday. You should probably listen to them.

Also the new Deerhunter is a dream.

Great Lake Swimmers

ideally the first 2 albums. I can't stress this enough. It's what I default to whenever I'm in a Nick Drakey/Microphoney mood.

Nobody & Mystic Chords of Memory

Tree Colored See album, lovely stuff. Also Ola Podrida, Shearwater, M Ward, Skygreen Leopards, Royal City (1st 2 albums)

John Martyn

Solid Air!!!

Earth 2

Lie down and let the vibrations rumble over you. Beautiful.

ólafur arnalds' album

'eulogy for evolution'
jesus christ this thing breaks my heart every time i hear it...

How about

Jeniferever (although only really From Across The Sea if I'm honest). Also M. Ward, Mechanical Bride.
