Glasgow Music Scene

so whats the crack then?
I am moving up there in Sept to start a course at Glasgow School of Art, and am going up with the bass player in my current band where we are hoping to get new members to complete the line-up. (Drummer and 2nd Guitarist/Synth if yer intersted btw!)

I've read on some recent threads that the scene there is a bit on its arse at the moment. is this true? and if so, to what extent? It worries me a bit that there seems to be a lack of any website dedicated to the scene like you'd typicaly find in Leeds, Manchester etc, and maybe this is one of the reasons gigs arent getting promoted well etc?
Iam thinking about getting one established when I move up as I believe it can only prove positive.

Anyway, thoughts etc?

  • whoever told you its on its arse

    was talking out of their's

there are already numerous websites like the one you are suggesting - www.jockrock.org being the biggest (although its strange at times)and its run alongside www.isthismusic.com magazine

as with every big city there's some amazing bands, lots and lots of utter shite and the usual scenesters inbetween

    • good to hear.

I was just going off what i read on that thread about the poor turnout for a Johnny Foreigner gig there in Jan.

I was still thinking of starting a www.Glasgow Music Scene.com
as its the most obvious and dedicated for a title non? :)

(for example, I couldnt find fuck all for glasgow music scene in a google search)

      • p.s.

going on what i said before, and after checking out those 2 sites you linked me to, they are representative of scotland not exclusive to glasgow.
I think a Glasgow exclusive site would be good.

      • Start here

      • to be fair they'd had little

or no press as far as Scotland or Glasgow was concerned and i dont remember the other bands on the bill being that great (this last bit may be total shit as i have a terrible memory)

as Hugo points out below the biggest "indie" read you'll get around glasgow is the skinny magazine

not to be harsh but i reckon you'd be wasting your time starting any sort of site like that

        • really?

thats a bit disheartening to be honest.
Seems the place could do with something like that to act as a better social hub for glasgow gig goers as well as bands, cause likesay, I havent yet seen one site purely dedicated to Glasgow music.

          • again

to be fair any "scottish" music site is gonna be primarily based around the glasgow scene as up until recently edinburgh was outrageously shit (its gotten a bit better in the last few years) and all i know of aberdeen/dundee is that there's *alot* of terrible metal bands/guys dressing like they're in fear factory

            • aberdeen

"all i know of aberdeen/dundee is that there's *alot* of terrible metal bands/guys dressing like they're in fear factory"

              ---------

in the past month in Aberdeen I've promoted Magik Markers, Human Bell, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Benjamin Wetherill, Caribou, Born Ruffians, Stars Of The Lid, RememberRemember, Glissando, Vetiver, Adrian Crowley and more...

so there's a hell of a lot more going on than terrible metal...

              • hence the

                "all i know of" bit

good for you and aberdeen :)

  • thats bullshit

glasgow's music scene is extremely healthy at the minute.

you will love it im sure!

    • good shit :)

do you think the website is a good idea though?

      • I guess you'd need to

actually listen to what you'd be dealing with at first.

        • hmmm

so yer suggesting that glasgow bands arent up to much? Iam purely thinking of a site that will display all of the glasgow gigs that are on that night on the home page. I havent seen anything like that yet, so that can only be a good thing surely?

pretty much does what you are proposing

            • yeah

but they dont list every single gig going, only usually major or mainstream ones. They take bloody ages to list smaller promoters gigs if they even bother at all. But thats only from my experience i guess. All im saying is ive missed good gigs before from relying on them.

              • Skinny

lists them all - frickin' all of them. Every one. Even the one in your toilet.

  • daddy?

what are you doing in public?

    • Get to bed Klaire

I have a new family now, and they are considerably better than thou.

  • Any band with Andy Brown in it is good.

    that is all.

  • The List

gives all its live music listings by city, and it's also online.
    Otherwise ents24.com is pretty good.
The major venues are all out there, none more so than King Tuts.
Personally I would rather hear about tours than listings specific to one city.
For any band, Glasgow = bigger venues, dearer gig, Edinburgh = smaller venue, cheaper gig.
    Works for me.
Best of luck with the move :-)

    • tuts is fine

for touring bands and awful pay to play local acts but the skinny lists shows in places such as stereo/sleazies/13th note which would probably be more to a DiSers taste than some of the gash DF put on

      • aye

        hear you there brother.
pay to play is balls too, was recently talking about this on manchester music website, theres a big amount of pay to pay promoters there at the mo, which means shite bands on at decent venues, and the decent bands cant actually get gigs cause of it.

    • Yeah, see what yer saying there.

and cheers for the good luck,
      cannae wait to move :)

      • I'm at Glasgow Uni

I wouldn't want to be in any other city in the UK right now to be honest with regards the music scene; there's enough going on to keep you occupied most nights of any given week, but there's less chance of losing the real gems of a gig amongst a dea of crap like you might do in London.

Plenty of class local acts too; Dananananaykroyd, Zoey Vsan Goey, Frightened Rabbit, Ross Clark, Chris Brokaw. Seriously, you'll love it.

        • class :)

          really can't wait now :)
I know whatever its like, its gonna be 100 times better than fucking Lancaster anyway...
hell i bet Slough's better than that shitehole :)

        • seconded

but then i've always lived here
and it's nice to see someone giving ross some love unprovokedly

          • Ross Clark is great

And a nice guy to boot. Oh, and Julian, you're from Lancaster? Went to school there, and bar the efforts of the library and LAWM at the Yorkie, Lancaster doesn't hold a candle to Glasgow. Doesn't do too badly given its size though in fairness, Preston fares much worse.

            • you did?

              well theres a coincidence :)
We should def meet up in Glasgow and talk about how crap Lancaster is then, he he :)

Aye, Lancaster is far too small to sustain its own scene. we tried it, but there simply isnt enough musicians or original bands to make anything or it.

What school did you go to man?
              x

              • oh actually

looking at yer profile, I see yer based in Preston? ah well!

  • Glasgow's music scene

is fucking brilliant. I love Glasgow.

    • yey

      :D

      • Theres a few decent bands in Lancaster

But far too many shitty pub rock/snotty-nosed "punk" acts by teenagers. I went to LRGS, for my sins, so spent a fair bit of time in the city. But yeah, Glasgow= the sex.

        • ha ha

totally agree, and im sure i know which snotty nosed punk act yer on about! heh heh :)
I went/go to Heysham High shithole meself, hardcore! :) did you ever see us by the way? (Death In Public) we werent too great material-wise up until recently though right enough.

          • Nah, sorry mate

Last time i saw a gig in Lancaster was waaaay back Christmas before last, barring my mates band over Easter (Obviously Four Believers for what it's worth; shameless self(ish)-promotion, i know) at the Yorkie. Tend to do most of my gig-going when i'm back home in either Preston or Manchester. I'll keep an eye out for you in future though.

            • cool cool

we should be gigging in Glasgow as soon as we get the line-up sorted! you dont know any musicians by the way do ye?

  • I think the Glasgow music scene is very healthy....

Plenty of good venues with lots of good touring and local bands playing.
The crowds are generally always up for it and looking for a good time.
I must add that I think King tUts is becoming quite expensive these days though for booze!

    • Here you go Mate!

1.Start an Art-Band with utter pretensions to make cool “pop” music. Have a silly name! Like danana! you should find a flat near sauchiehall street

2.Make some scenester friend’s or hope to shag the bird out of the camera obscure!

3.Reference Franz’s 1st album as your bible and hope to bump into Kapranos on a night out! To tell him you love him

4.Play 3 gigs and wonder why you have not been signed? (P2P is a bitch)

5.Do an interview with the daily record razz girls & hope billy sloan is cool enough to list you’re his out of date radio show!

6.Take a 1 single maybe an album deal? & hit the town tell all the scenster's that you are going place’s on the indie scene

7.Relaise that the Scottish music scene can’t operate with out failing to stab each other in the back. Why should we help each other?? (We thought that you are the best music scene in Scotland?)

8.Grit your teeth as other band’s in Glasgae have been looked over as Dundee has become the scene for “Lad Rock” (this would be the right time to add a football chant in the middle of 1 of your song’s)

9.Share a beer with the dykeenies & dananabananfanana and discuss that that it would have been great to playing in Glasgae during the Chemikal Heydays

      10. Start your course!

    • aye

totally agree, tuts is a rip these days

  • Nuts and seeds

    put on amazing gigs:
    http://www.myspace.com/nutsseeds

The list is brilliant, even metro helps you know what's going on.

Just go to sleazy's, mono, stereo, beat club, places like that... and try optimo on a sunday, you'll never regret it!

    I miss glasgow a lot sometimes :(

    • cool, ta for the tip

      ill check em oot

    • yes! nuts and seeds seconded

they put on the best gigs :D

and seconded again, sleazy's, mono and stereo are basically where i live.

      • I see you play an instrument

from yer pic. do you play guitar by any chance? own a delay pedal? :)
