The Thursday Film Forecast: June 5
Showreel
This week America has been baffled that a film for ladies could not only get to the number one spot, it could knock Indiana Jones off his perch to get there (oh, and break the box office record for highest-ever opening R-rated film, too) ... Just when you thought the Donnie Darko prequel S.Darko couldn't sound any less appealing, they go and sign up Showgirls alum Elizabeth Berkley to star. We take it all back ... Charlotte Gainsbourg will no longer star in Terminator 4, after a "scheduling conflict" with a French comedy. Bryce Dallas Howard will replace her ... The trailer for the sort of weird, potentially awful, might be alright remake of The Women has been released:
We weren't sure, but then we thought, Meg Ryan and Duffy - how could it fail?
Hot tickets
Out at your local cinema this week: ignore the words "Ben Affleck's directorial debut" and instead focus on Gone Baby Gone's good reviews. And the fact that Amy Ryan, aka Beadie from The Wire, got an Oscar nod for her starring role. And the fact that Omar from The Wire is in it. Or else, just watch The Wire ... If one quality film in a week is too much for you, then you'll be safe in the knowledge that the rest of the new releases don't even come close. There's slasher romp Prom Night, which ReelViews calls "The OC with a bodycount" - and not even in a good way. And then there's Superhero Movie, "starring" Pamela Anderson and Leslie Nielsen. Ouch.

If Leslie and Pam can't tempt you out of your living room, then here are the DVDs you can buy from Monday. You might have heard of this Juno film. Surely it's time for the backlash against the backlash against the... it's all very confusing. But we thoroughly enjoyed it, hype or no ... Award magnet Diving Bell And The Butterfly brings its subtitled class to the small screen ... Spew-inducing monsterfest Cloverfield scares the bejebus out of us, again ... Jesus Camp lends a documentary eye to US fundamentalism for youngsters ... and in TV land, Curb Your Enthusiasm season six makes an appearance, as does a box set of the whole damn thing. Who wants to chip in and we'll share it?
