The singing saw is the most beautiful sounding instrument in the world

Untitled by Pelican on the album Australasia proves this beyond all reasonable doubt. Even if you dont like Pelican you should listen to it right now and then agree. You could disagree and tell me what you think is more beautiful but you would be RONG. RONG. Do it anyway if you want but still... RONG

  • I apologise,

listen to it though? its really very, very lovely

  • i havent

listened to pelican for such a while, it gives me 4 am purpose!

  • I are an saw player

Saw am an very nice instrument.

    ys.

    • Have you got a proper one or a normal saw?

how much did it cost? do you use a bow? is it difficult to play? can you teach me over the internet for no money down?

      I wants one

      • Lessons from The Me.

        1. the crapper a saw is at cutting wood, the better it is at making music. You want a very long, very thin sheet of metal. Be warned- most hardware shops get offended if you ask for their cheapest, crappest saw.

        2. you can play with a bow or by hitting it at the appropriate points.

        3. it's...pretty difficult. the point at which you bow, or hit, changes depending on which note you're playing, and you normally have to do a lot of glissandoing and adjusting as you go, especially when you're learning. Obviously, there aren't any visual indicators of what note you're playing either, so your relative pitch skills get tested a lot. It's also quite tiring on your left hand and your knee (which you use for vibrato).

        4. there are quite a few sites that explain it a bit. have a bit of a google, I'd say.

        • ta muchly

im going to raid my dads garage and dissapear one of his' preciousses

  • Singing saws are awesome

    but theremins are even better.

    • waily-noise fail

    • Check out 'Duet for Lapsteel and Theremin'

they have a myspace page that I can't find at work but they're brilliant

    • you can do a pretty good emulation of a singings saw or theremin

using a screwdriver as a combined bow/slide on guitar strings, needs abit of gain or compression to boost the volume though

  • The Black Heart Procession

    Oh yes.

  • completely agree

think there was a thread about the 'best instrument ever' a while back and I nominated this. It just sounds so fucking eerie, almost human.

    • ...

There's an interlude track on 'More Deep Cuts' by Thee More Shallows which features a singing saw. It's great!

  • Lap Steel

    is nicer.

    • Amiina

do this wonderfully on their album 'Kurr'.

  • Actually I think THIS is the most beautiful sounding instrument in the world.
