The Lemonheads - No Backbone

Is there a case for saying this is, on paper at least, the Lemonheads best song? The evidence;

Evan Dando, the Descendents rhythm section, extra guitar from J Mascis, and written by Tom Morgan.

Its a fantasy line up and a great tune. My actual favourite is Hannah and Gabi though. Thoughts?

  • My thoughts are that hannah and gabi is also awesome

but i can't think of a favourite lemonheads track right now. i love too many.

  • I lurve

the whole of 'Car, Button, Cloth'...

It's irrelevant, I'm and elephant and she's a mouse........ Great lyric

  • The Outdoor Type

    is best

    followed by

    Great Big No
    Rudderless
    Alison's Starting to Happen
    Style
    Paid To Smile

    • the outdoor type! that's my mum's favourite as well!

      <3

    • A good list

, esp Rudderless. I'd add Stove, Confetti, Big Gay Heart, Being Around, and probably a dozen more to it

      • Their version of...

        Different Drum is awesome.

I'd also add Drug Buddy and the acoustic version of Ride with Me to the list.

Oh, and in case you missed it:

        http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3449064

        • As is their version

of Luka. And Brass Buttons too. Saw that article, thanks for the heads up

          • And...

Bit Part is the best ever song lasting only 1 minute and 53 seconds.

  • What happened to the new lemonheads?

Is there anything worth getting since "it;s a shame about ray'?

that other one with "Big Gay Heart" was pretty good too as I recall

    • Hell yeah

Last self titled is great, though not at twee as Ray. Car Button Cloth is worth getting too. Top tracks not yet mentioned; 'L'il Seed' and 'Mallo Cup' but the acoustic versions of 'divan' , 'into your arms' and 'being around' on the mrs.Robinson single. Lovely.

      • That last album

(frm which No Backbone is from) is absolutely unbelievably good. I dont really understand why it wasnt huge.

Annoyingly last time I saw them they only played one song off it same when I saw him solo i think), which is a shame as that stuff could really use a push.

      • ^^^^^This^^^^^^

I'd assumed the deluxe version of 'Ray which was released recently would have all the ace b-sides from that era.

Sadly it doesn't - bit of a missed opportunity there imo

  • mallo cup?

but anything off 'its a shame' is a classic. alison is starting to happen is my favourite at the moment.

    • The Outdoor Type

is their best song, and also a contender for THE best song.

Being Around is also brilliant, the acoustic version on one of the B-Sides moreso than the one with slideguitar all over it. "If I was a rubber cheque, would you let me bounce, up and down inside your bank account?"

      • oh,

and Frank Mills! I was gutted when I found out it was a cover, I just thought it was this weird, surreal little story-song he'd dreamt up...

        • There

really are too many to mention arent there?

          • Back in the days of tape

I got 24 Lemonheads tracks onto a D60. Best single band comp ever.

            • Are we all agreed

that they were heroically shit pre Lovey though?

              • Ha!

I've got Lick, Creator and Hate Your Friends, there's some truly ropey hardcore with sub-5th form lyricism.

                • 'Stove' is their best

                  , 'Hannah & Gabbi' a v.close second

                  • I think they improved around Lick

That's their first half-decent album for me. Some good stuff (Mallo Cup, Glad I Don't Know, Luka, Strange) in there amongst all the filler.

                • ^

Lick is horrible, and I like the Lemonheads.

  • Awesome song

I couldn't get into the last album, but i really love this song.

So many favourite Lemonheads moments.. some obscuro Evan gems that haven't already been mentioned:
    Skulls (Misfits cover)
Pin Yr Heart (Outdoor Type b-side)
    Ride With Me (acoustic version)
Piss Bottle Man (guest vocals on a Mike Watt track)

Anyone heard Purple Parollelogram, the song he wrote with Noel Gallagher? It sounds like Roll With It.

    • And never forget

      Galveston.

      What a fucking song.

      • Good one

i have the 7" of that with Balancing Act on the flip. This thread is making me think i should compile some kind of Lemonheads rarities compilation, so many to choose from.

      • they did a cover of galveston?

what is this on? i missed it...love that song

        • It was limited edition 7"

Galveston b/w Balancing Act, came out around the Car Button Cloth period. I have it on mp3 so can upload it when i'm back home if you're interested.

  • think about me when he calls around 3...

cos guess what, your baby is home..

  • INTO YOUR ARMS

    FTW

  • "She's the puzzle piece behind the couch

that makes the sky complete" < one of my favourite lyrics ever.

  • If I Could Talk I'd Tell You

is the best Lemonheads song. The single version though, not the album version with the flushing toilet which spoils it.

  • lick is better than car button cloth.

yeah. loads of people only like that album because it was the first thing by the lemonheads they heard.
