Six months on from the excitement that followed Glasvegas' every move at the turn of the year and already the doubters are raising their disconsolate heads above the parapet. This time the band's authenticity is under surveillance, whatever that means. So the early demos on the net have the Glasvegas of three years ago sounding like an entirely different band to the one you're hearing today? No doubt they were. And that's one of the reasons why they're to be admired.
But some people will never be satisfied. It’s their loss, as tonight’s Glasvegas set is pretty much unimpeachable. By and large the same one they closed this year's Dot to Dot Festival with 15 miles down the road a few weeks back, but with the added bonus of a proper soundcheck. They’re also playing to a room of people who actually want to hear their material, instead of a gaggle of pissed-up weekend scenesters. For the fanbase proper, their mix of melancholic pop and refined shoegaze is a joy to witness once again.
Older songs like 'Flowers And Football Tops', 'It’s My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry' and 'Daddy's Gone' resonate with the force of a national anthem, each and every one of them sung back with increasing degrees of enthusiasm by the captivated throng. But it’s newer songs that really make a lasting impression this evening. 'Lonesome Swan' and 'Polmont On My Mind' stagger and swagger in equal measures, buoyed along by James Allan's distinctive vocals and the billowing echoes of white noise emanating from Rab Allan's guitar.
The animated interplay between the guitarist and bassist Paul Donoghue is a central feature of the show, illustrating just how far the band’s confidence has grown since DiS first cast eyes on them in January of this year. Better still, however, is the two-man keyboard and vocal requiem that is 'Ice Cream Van', a song that seems to be structured around some kind of ritualistic funeral march, except that its lyrical content deals with the darker underside of sectarianism and covert racism. When the album finally drops later this year, it’s likely to have the hallmarks of being a classic.
Of course there will still be some of you that remain unconvinced. It’s all about product placement allegedly; "There hasn't been a better time for a band like this to release a record" someone was heard to say in the foyer, no doubt in reference to the hysteria surrounding the current My Bloody Valentine reunion. To an extent they're spot on. But the artists themselves must deliver, and they continue to do so. Anyone still unsure of Glasvegas’ capabilities to excel in their field really needs to get themselves to one of their shows, pronto.
I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahem
pfffffffft
shoegaze is dead.
I see what you did there, Mr Moderator
:)
That's better.
i decided
not to go and see them the day before in leicester to watch sweden vs greece in the football...
ACK!
i feel like a plum idiot in hindsight now, very much wish i had gone.
hmmmm
I thought I'd left a comment here
;-)
yeah, nice review, looking forward to seeing them/hearing the LP
Officially in my top 2 bands of 2008
Glasvegas in Guildford
They were mint at the Guildford Boilerooms last week. James Allan seemed like a decent bloke as well. Fair play to him.
The missus dragged me to see them last week,
at the Hertford Marquee. I was very much undecided on the whole thing; the few demos and mySpace bits I'd heard didn't get me too excited.
After seeing them live consider me decided: they're freaking awesome.
Absolutely brilliant band;
not one for the chin strokers mind, but a fucking great band.
who else is in the top 2, Dom?
Today
A Place To Bury Strangers.
Tomorrow? Who knows?
Not for me
I saw them last year in King Tuts. Thought they were pretty embarrassing.
The first thing that struck me, and i have no idea if they are still doing this, is the look or over considered image. Dressed in white sipping from buckfast bottles. Good god. Why? I suppose this could be put down to youthful naivety that this is cool, funny, a good idea, appealing. You could say who cares what they look like, but quite clearly they did and they wanted you to care. Of course this will be denied. As well as lookin laughable, it jarred with what i had heard about them, struggling band trying to make good. Someone had spent a few bob.
The songs for me were the wrong side of Weegie. Not smart, not well written and on the night sounded shte. Put that together with a ridiculous look and you have well and truly turned me off. Maybe they have grown beyond this but i doubt it.
as a glaswegian would say
" this band are pure pish by'ra'way "
i live in glasgow and dont actually know one single person from here who actually like them ... seriously
had the misfortune off seeing them support someone else a year or so ago... ended up having a 40 minute fag break outside.. as did most of the crowd

...I can't wait
to see this band again...they have improved beyond all recognition (caught them in London with my pal back in May)and believe me when I saw them they were still using samplers that would blow the ears aff an elephant...as for the negative comments above; either put up or shut up...why take the time to post a negative comment...what the f**k is the point?...I've noticed this craig character posting before...probably works in Glasgow doing a job (probably connected to Music) which is pretty unimportant and not very satisfying...a wannabee musician probably consumed by jealousy that his own sad little life will forever remain unfulfilled...and can't stand it that a band who have done their own thing are now enjoying the rewards of their hard work...all I would say to johneeboy is please go and see them...I was at the gig at Tuts well over a year ago also and they are so not that band anymore...Caitlin x
i can't wait also
i especially can't wait for their album. I thought they were amazing on Jules Holland.
he sings the way
that one of my radgie scottish cousins speaks. its a bit threatening 'your da' he's gowwwwnnnnnn'.
Liked 'Daddy's Gone' a lot
But everything else i've heard has just cried out BLAND to me.
It's true that there seems to be very few people in Glasgow who actually like Glasvegas n'all, they're always treated as a bit of a joke whenever mentioned up here. I remember at the Frightened Rabbit album launch, one of the support acts sung a parody completely ripping the piss out of them; very funny, but not at all unexpected coming from the Glasgow 'music-types'.
I'll reserve judgement until i hear the album, but there are a lot better bands in the area with half the publicity these lot are getting.
It was
Jocky Ventakaraman (sp)
caitlin...
are you related to the cunts ?
craigx
the reason
caitlin doesnt like my posts is because the bands that she has listed on her profile are all in my opinion anti-music
