80's Queen was pretty awful. Then again I can forgive them because everyone became awful in the 80's

loads of crap on their albums. The odd gem...mostly a singles band. I guess every home should have the Greatest Hits.

i'm still amazed by his playing. He's a total nerd about guitar playing which is pretty crap for your rockstar cred but if you want to know how to play diminshed blah blah 7th scales, he's your man.

it's to be liked because it's extraordinarily ambitious and brilliantly achieved music with a big fat heart. Irony is pop death.

In fairness I have been put off them more by anytime I have read or heard an interview with Roger Taylor or Brian May.
They are like a gimmick band, their music doesn't stand up well against any of their peers!

This post would be in it. It pretty much sums up what I would say about Queen, except I probably wouldn't be as raptuous about their 'highs' or as annoyed about their 'lows'.

But yeah: amazing musicians or not, their music just isn't something that I can really get my teeth into.

I owned Hot Space in the 80s and loved it, though.

1 - I can persuade myself that most band names are good or bad really

2 - Noel Gallagher was in Oasis who you seem to rate judging by your user page

3 - this is pretty terrible but it doesn't have much to do with their old music

4 - again not much to do with their music

5 - Led zepp stuff can be pretty "straight-up cock"

6 - who judges what they want to listen to based on music historians? I wouldn't judge my happiest memories based on the fact that they were worth chronicling for the generations

7 - See Oasis, Led Zep, Kasabian

There is a very good reason they aren't ever even mentioned or considered by music historians as one of the seriously important icons of popular music - and unfortunately, its because of the things mentioned above

It's cool to like Led Zep but it's uncool to like Queen.
Everyone forgets how gash Zep where by the last lp. My god it ranks alongside 'Hot Space' by Queen as pure tosh.

Yes Queen were excellent and deserve recognition. I happen to have quite a few of their good songs, that numbers around 80. I don't spend all my time listening to them though.Freddie was a legend because he made himself - he rose from nowhere and didn't even recieve training. He was naturally talented , and intelligent. He suffered nodules or whatever in the early 80's and then hs voice became rougher, but even then he could do amazing things with it. Brian May is a godly guitarist and song - writer, his attitude, abilities and his unique personality make him great. Eric Clapton himself said that Brian can do things that he couldn't even come close to. Roger is a surprisingly good drummer. He also never recieved professional training but his style of drumming is one of the most unique I know of. He and Brian really know how to play for the benefit of a song and not just at the speed of light :/ He has so many little trademarks in his drumming. Also hes a mint singer. John is brilliant because hes so different to what people expect of band members. He was a sensational player and also very quiet and kind.
ALl 4 members wrote massive hits and were talented with various instruments.

As for Queen declining in the eighties, theres no denying it but this was also a very hard decade for the band. Brian was suicidal and Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. There was so much tension in the band. Their talent for success still shined through overall with tracks such as I Want It All, Play The Game, Another One Bites The Dust, Under Pressure, Its A Hard Life, theres alot of them. Bands today do not have enough talent to have the same sustainable success that Queen had.
The one thing about Queen is that each member had huge input to their songs, and the band played and recorded songs even if there was not complete aggreement. Given the different tastes of the members, this would make for a strange combination. What most people don't do is listen to their earlier albums such as Queen II - which was their best. They have released quite a bit of rubbish but odly enough everything seems to appeal to someone. Every1 makes fun of Flash but in fairness for an old chessy comic book heroe what would you have composed? It suited the film, and the film flunked the song was a hit. Never heard the rest of the songs for that film.

Breakthru - may be 80's synth smuck, but it was energetic and uplifting, a rare gem

The Miracle - Is a good song if only they had cut out the end jam with the kids and moved straight to last part and extended it
