Just wanted to know which album/albums were best to start with.
Pitchfork gave Zaireeka a 0.0 but the Soft Bulletin 10.0 ........ I am forever confused - please put it right.

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.
^this
then Soft Bulletin
I concur
I prefer Soft Bulletin to Yoshimi,
but The Day They Shot a Hole in the Jesus Egg is the only thing of theirs that I've listened to at all in the past couple of years.
The last album sounded fucking horrible.
no
at war with the mystics wasnt that bad. it wasnt that great, but 'fucking horrible' isnt fair
it is fair....
unlistenable.
by sounded horrible,
I meant the production. There are are a couple of decent things on it, but I really don't like the way it sounds.
Erm
'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots', its a great album and pretty much sums up The Flaming Lips,
For earlier Flaming Lips try, erm, 'Clouds Taste Metallic' :) I think anyways.
it's the non-indie answer i realise
but Soft Bulletin is the best place to start i think. Unless you want to build up to it, which is no bad thing. Yoshimi has a few crackers on it, but soft bulletin is more consistent imo.
Just get whichever you see first I guess.
why is that the non-indie answer?
i'd second 'soft bulletin' too.
Soft Bulletin
Yoshimi
Soft Bulletin
if you want to go slightly old school may I recommend Transmissions from the Satellite Heart.
It's very good.
First 'Soft Bulletin'
then 'Yoshimi...', then work your way backwards
I love Flaming Lips but I fucking hate At War With the Mystics so caution should be taken with that one
Can't believe no-one's mentioned
Transmissions from the Satellite Heart! It's got She Don't Use Jelly on it FFS!!
Clouds Taste Metallic!
Best thing ever. Last album was shite though, AVOID
I agreed with this
until you slagged off 'At War...'
I happen to like it. Admittedly not as much as the others.
Anywhere,
they've consistently made impressive records
don't listen to anyone but me on this
Get Transmissions From The Satellite Heart (1993), Clouds Taste Metallic (1995), and The Soft Bulletin (1999) at the same time. Then listen to them in order. Three of the best albums ever recorded.
The others are simply not as good. If you like those three albums, then Hit To Death In The Future Head (1991), In A Priest Driven Ambulance (1989) (on release over here with a bonus disc as "the day they shot a hole in the jesus egg") and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (2002or3) are worth getting, and if you were willing to sift through some shit, then get Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid! which is a three CD collection of the 80's albums and some live stuff and b-sides (like the batman theme tune!).
Stay well clear of the latest one though!
don't really get what's wrong with At War
It's not a great album by any means but it does have some great tracks on it. It just meanders alot through the middle.
But I would start with Soft Bulletin. Much much better than Yoshimi, although Do You Realise is beatiful.
^ listen to this guy
he speaks the truth!
Satellite - Clouds - Soft Bulletin is the holy Lips trinty and will give you the most rounded idea of what they're all about.
That is all.
ooops
that was supposed to point at dan_thw's comment
'The Soft Bulletin'
is by far the best place to start with the Lips.
After that, get 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots', which is pretty much the sister-album to Soft Bulletin.
If you want to go earlier (and here's a fair warning, they're a lot scrappier/less musically accomplished/poorly produced in comparison, but still loads of fun), get 'Transmissions from the Satellite Heart' and 'Clouds Taste Metallic'
Those 4 are pretty much the standouts in the Flaming Lips career. Anything else you get is up to you in the spirit of investigation, but to be honest you'll find lots to like out there. 'Zaireeka' is great, but it involves owning several CD players and some friends to get right. Or some diligence with a music sequencing program.
At War does =
a bit poop. I've never managed to play it all the way thru in one go, it's that kinda naff.
#1 Soft Bulletin
#2 Yoshimi
#3 I don't know
Not that I listened to At War With The Mystics that much, but
I didn't find much wrong with it
But anyway, I'd go for Yoshimi first, then Soft Bulletin
I haven't heard any of the other albums though
these last two posts make me GO MAD MAD
For me, The Flaming Lips ARE Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, Clouds Taste Metallic and The Soft Bulletin. Anything after that is supplementary.
Anyone who doesn't have the above three albums, rectify this situation NOW and STOP EXPRESSING AN OPINION ON WHERE TO START WHEN YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED YOURSELF!
Slightly elitist rant over.
who was that actually aimed at?
Most people in this thread have mentioned those three albums. I know I did.
not you!
I might not have the ability to be particularly tolerant, but I do have the ability to read!
Basically it was aimed at all the people who have come on this thread and expressed an opinion without actually having heard anything pre-Soft Bulletin, or in some cases, pre-Yoshimi, which is quite a lot of people it seems.
It's like asking someone "what's the best Rocky film?" and them going "oh, Rocky 6, definitely. Or Rocky 5. I haven't seen any of the others though". You just wouldn't do that for fear of looking like a complete lemon. I don't see why this should be any different.
late period: soft bulletin
i don't know much about their pre-soft bulletin stuff. treat them almost like two bands.
Wrong.
If you actually listen to the tunes/lyrics on Transmissions or Clouds Taste Metallic they are clearly the same band. All they did with Soft Bulletin was not bother replacing the guitarist.
At War... was way better than Yoshimi
Yoshimi is Booooooring (apart from Do You Realize?). No tunes, too over-produced and electronic. At least At War With The Mystics had a bit of spark.
The Soft Bulletin is their masterpiece. Anyone who says otherwise is only doing it because they are indie and don't want to give the obvious answer. My personal favourite though is Clouds Taste Metallic. So underrated. Scrappy production but man, them tunes.
^
Transmissions... Zaireeka, Priest Driven Ambulance/Jesus Egg and Hit To Death... are all better than those 2 albums BTW. Thought I should mention that.
the soft bulletin
is the best thing they have ever done. its the best thing most bands have ever done and ever will do. but you might want to start with something else because following the soft bulletin is like following streisand
Transmissions from the satellite heart
is as good a place to start as any, as it's as similar to the older stuff as it is to the more recent things - songs like Moth in the Incubator, which begins in a lovely way, but then lurches into skronky heavy-guitar-feedback (although the transition gets plastered over by strings), but then goes off in another direction altogether. It's an awesome song, and Transmissions is an awesome album.
After that, get Yoshimi and Clouds...
Get all 11 albums
and then play them on 14 (yeah, count it) seperate CD players simultaneously, that shit will blow your mind!
