He actually just asked Kevin Shields if that sort of lack of dynamsic in MBV were akin to the Cubist attempt to "crush heirarchy" by bgringing the background forward or something obscenely ridiculous like that.
Does any musician sit there and go..."you know what, the Cubists had a great idea...how can we do that with music?"
You could see that Kevin Shields thought it was a daft question. His response, basically, was that the lack of dynamics is purely because he likes how it sounds. He compared it to the Ramones - the way there isn't a quiet, bit and a loud bit etc; it's just "in your face" (in Shields' words).
Svenodious only asks questions designed to display how much kerrazy super smart esoteric stuff he knows.
Kevin's responses are great, and this has to be partly due to the guy on the other side spitting out rhetoric. Sheild's handles every question thoughtfully and calmly, comfortable in the situation, like man sitting reading a novel in a drag club. Undaunted.
...as I thought they would be. I brought my earplugs, but didn't wear them for the whole set on Friday - probably about half of it. Any my ears weren't ringing or numb afterwards.
when the interviewer said about some crazy people being able to put on a suit and tie in the morning and present themselves... whilst wearing a suit and tie and talking the most pseudo intellectual nonsense imaginable.
so no one talking about the fact Kevin Shields says the new album is 3/4 finished and should be finished by the end of the summer? or is this just another Shields-ism?
I'm seeing them next week and I was gonna start a thread about this
Earplugs?
I mean surely if they're as apocalyptic as some people are saying they wouldn't be allowed to play in a built-up area.
Unless they're considerably louder than, say, Part Chimp, people need to lay off the drama a little.
my ears hurted
and i had earplugs
however the ICA isa box of a room, with a decent sound system, the roundhouse might be different
He sure
does like rubbing that table.
Bet they arent that loud
Will just be like Mogwai shows where everyone feels obliged to mention the volume regardless of whether it is or isnt that loud.
Having now watched it
1. Shields has just said what I said, so ignore that
2. That interviewer makes me want to die.
despite having been the singer in
nation of ulysses, the make up and weird war?
do they rival dinosaur jr when it comes to loudness?
dino jr. are typically just perfect for my ears when solid earplugs are inserted.
The word douchebag
was invented for that interviewer.
What a cunt with all his cod-philosohical profundities and table-stroking and shoes. Wanker.
See when musicians, or worse still, interviewers come out with stuff like "Capitalism is mindless, that's the problem"...argh!
have you watched the first three parts yet?
he's a riot
yeah
I'm doing it just now for some cathartic anger therapy.
Plunder
Ian Svenonius?
Yeah that DC punk dude
He's a tosspot.
He has
his legs crossed, he must be intelligent.
lol
He actually just asked Kevin Shields if that sort of lack of dynamsic in MBV were akin to the Cubist attempt to "crush heirarchy" by bgringing the background forward or something obscenely ridiculous like that.
Watching
the Graham Coxon interview now ><http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=1399286289
The Angles were spiky
by the way.
pls explain how this is ridiculous
kthxbi
It's just such a pretentious thing to ask
Does any musician sit there and go..."you know what, the Cubists had a great idea...how can we do that with music?"

yes.
also, are some musicians capable of taking a question like that and giving a decent answer that gives a new perspective on their music?
yes
II will not be swayed from my position
That he is a bawbag.
Mark E Smith
rips him in this video
http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=1283221887
it made me cringe ><
Oh christ.
Did he just go for the fresh prince hand shake and miss it?
oh come on, he's a bellend
it doesn't mean you have to stop listening to Weird War!
It does end up being a really interesting interview
Kevin's responses are great, and this has to be partly due to the guy on the other side spitting out rhetoric. Sheild's handles every question thoughtfully and calmly, comfortable in the situation, like man sitting reading a novel in a drag club. Undaunted.
"like man sitting reading a novel in a drag club. Undaunted."
I'm stealing that.

dynamics
bringing
to be fair,
i think it's fairly tongue in cheek, and it's loads more interesting than, 'so, where'd you get your band name from lol?'.
also, he was in nation of ulysses so he can't ever be bad in my book ever.
the andrew wk interview in that series is amazing, by the way.
I wouldn't know cause
I'VE NEVER SEEN THEM!
Yet
They weren't as loud...
...as I thought they would be. I brought my earplugs, but didn't wear them for the whole set on Friday - probably about half of it. Any my ears weren't ringing or numb afterwards.
i loved the irony
when the interviewer said about some crazy people being able to put on a suit and tie in the morning and present themselves... whilst wearing a suit and tie and talking the most pseudo intellectual nonsense imaginable.
new album?
so no one talking about the fact Kevin Shields says the new album is 3/4 finished and should be finished by the end of the summer? or is this just another Shields-ism?
well. this was recorded before last summer
so...
ah shit
I couldn't see a date and assumed it was made in connection with the gigs. Ah well, I can live in hope.
