Big Star!

Where to start?

I've sort of already started, but on a very small scale.

I had 8 downloads left on emusic so I got the first 8 songs from No.1 Record/Radio City

  • thats where to start.

and finish more or less. the rest is patchy.

  • get the rest of that album

it's amazing. Then get Radio City. I haven't got Third / Sister Lovers, but apparently it's good shit.

  • Those two records are brilliant

Sister Lovers is also great, but nothing like as accessible. The rest I wouldn't worry about, but Chris Bell recorded a really good solo album after he left the band so that's worth having.

    • I say

get Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers and play 'em about once a year for ten years and then all of a sudden...BAM!...you'll fall in love with them.

      • Bought the Ryko re-issue

of Sister Lovers for a quid the other day, and can concur with the 'it's a good record' consensus.

        Win!

        • Coincidentally

I've just been listening to Radio City!

What a great record. I'm about to listen to #1 Record too. I can't decide which is better, errr probably Radio City 'cos it's more raw.

Sister Lovers is great too, if a touch depressing. Not as easy listening as the others, but with hidden depths.

  • Listen to thirteen

over and over and over again - oh and september girls.. man that stuff is cool

    • ^ this

plus the ballad of el goodo

  • I've got a really good Chris Bell solo album

somewhere. The title escapes me though.

  • Thirteen is one of my favourite songs ever.

There was a Big Star tribute album out and Wilco covered that song. I actually prefer that version but only because Jeff Tweedy has one of the best voices ever.

    • The Elliott Smith cover

on the Thumbsucker soundtrack & New Moon is incredible, it'd be hard to pick a favourite out of them.

Third/Sister Lovers is great, I concur.

  • #1 Record is derrr best

Radio City has got some great stuff on, but it isn't as good as #1 (which also has all the rockier songs from the other guy who left afterwards)

    so yeah, #1 Record

  • "In Space" was a dissapointment

I like BIg Srtar and Posies so it seemed a lead pipe cinch but- MEH.

Starflyer 59's new record "My Island" is the best Big Star since "Third"; can't tell you why but I always think of Big Star when I'm listening to it.

    • The Letter

First track on Radio City is incredible. But my favourite Alex Chiltern related song is still The Letter. Apparently he was 16 when he sang it.

      • third

is a great album. anyone going to the shepherd's bush show on 28th aug ?
