i am seriously considering Conservative

1 vote
?
by _vikram

It was the 42 days thing that finally killed my long-held tribal loyalty to The Labour Party - a political party i worked on two election campaigns for and thought the best government we'd had since the 60s.

I can't in good conscience support a government that has so little respect for the most basic and fundamental civil rights. And actually I do think Cameron et al do - the David Davis stance kinda proved that for me.

So yeah, CG, you win - I am now a Tory, for the next election anyway. Hopefully Labour will sort their shit out and remember who they are meant to be, who they are meant to represent, and come back in 2014 or whenever with a properly liberal social democrat manifesto.

wouldn't it be better, if you're unsure

to make your decision closer to the election?

I don't see why Tory is that big a deal

plenty of people regard themselves as 'liberal.' There is no left or right dichotomy anymore; both parties sit in the centre-right ground.

Within this context, the Tories have always been the much more liberal party.

he voted for 28 days

but opposing 42 shows he cares about fundamental civil rights?

no but it does show they care more than Brown

yeah maybe I should vote Lib Dem instead.

yeah

or English Democrats

I just don't buy that they're the new

leaders of civil liberty and freedoms. So many of them were party members/MPs during Thatcher's reign. Including Cameron. They're not a nice group of people.

But in terms of current policy, you may as well roll a die if it's a choice between the two.

they're very selective

in which liberties they consider worthy of defending.

BOOOO!!!

I'm seriously considering Green

as the colour of my next t-shirt purchase.

dont do it

remember what happened last time you decided on your own t-shirt?

I keep nearly voting tory,

because I think there's precious little difference between them now everyone's battling for the centre-ground. Seems to me it's better to remove a stale government that has run out of ideas than just to keep it in power and pretend it's still vaguely 'leftwing' and that this actually means anything anymore in the British political spectrum.

But I can't bring myself to put an 'X' next to the c word. And then I end up voting Lib Dem every time. Fucksake.

I may spoil my ballot paper next time and vote for the

"FUCK THE LOT OF THEM" party.

Sadly the BNP is the theird most popular party in Pudsey and every uncast vote is effectively for the BNP.

I vote Green these days.

Mainly because I hate that they lose their deposit on elections through not getting enough votes.

How fucking anti-democratic is that shit? And it was brought in by the Tories, as I remember.

there are more than two

political parties in this country. Apparently.

this^

twisted logic vikram

see, i'd love if Brown just thought 'fuck it'

and pushed for proper constitutional change. Proportional Representation, a real constitution, separation of powers, de-centralised State, etc.

You know, do what he really believes in.

Except what he really believes in is the wholesale destruction of our centuries-old civil rights.

You could always stand as an MP?

Then you don't need to worry who to vote for.

Um

'de-centralised State...You know, do what he really believes in.'

When has Brown ever believed in a decentralised state?!

And there is, in theory at least, an attempt to update the constitution:

I'm seriously considering

sticking a toothbrush up my arse.

You want a properly liberal social democrat manifesto

and you're voting Tory?

That is just plain dumb. By all means register your protest at the Labour party for being a watered down right wing version of their former selves, but not by voting Tory please!

this ^

nope

i want to vote anti-labour. if where i live that means voting tory, sobeit. a few years of shitty conservative policy will still be better than the long-term damage the present government is doing to our society.

is voting tory anti labour tho?

if you get me.

if you want to show you don't support them, i'd go lib dem. don't most go labour-libdem/green?

Or BNP/UKIP

no, most are going new labour to new conservative

i don't know who old labour people vote for. they probably don't

is that people being suckered iin?

or am i just being cynical? no matter what they say, be it good or bad, i don't think i could ever vote Conservative. ever. I'd always go Labour then green/libdem.

So your case for going Old Labour to New Conservative

is that you don't know what the Old Labour people go for so you thought you'd be 'New Labour'?

Or else you're just 'New Labour', in which case you're just a Tory at heart anyway, so why the worry.

Incidentally Old Labour -> Green/Liberal as Sarky says.

You know, the tories will get in anyway.

You might as well vote for a party whose policies you don't think are 'shitty'.

As much as I admire your confidence

even the Conservative Party themselves don't think they'll 'get in anyway'.

It's still all to play for.

Much as I hate your party

Brown isn't going to win back peoples support. I know this, because I used to be a huge fan of his dour, Scottish demaneur, and now even i find him irritating and jowly.

And who do they have that they can promote who isn't either personality-free or massively hated?

The labour party clearly needs to be chucked out of power and sort itself out again and I think pretty much everyone can see that. And most people still think a lib dem/green vote is wasted, so they'll vote tory.

^

except in Scotland

where the Tories are barely considered at all and are a complete joke party.

he must get very defensive

being a member of the fourth party.

That's much healthier

Here they're seriously considered but are a still a complete joke party.

Boom-boom!

Jon Cruddas is pretty much the only person I like in the party

maybe Charles Clarke too. But Cruddas isn't well-known enough and Charles Clarke isn't really a leader.

I fear Tory-style wilderness beckons.

I don't think they will necessarily vote Tory. That's the least healthy thing that could happen

The best thing would be a totally fucked up hung parliament between the Lib Dems, Tories and Labour, forcing the slim majority party to put forward policies that might actually have popular support.

I fail to understand this

why would 'a few years of shitty conservative policy' do less damage to our country than labour policy?

Personally I think the main problem with Labour is that there is increasingly little to distinguish them from Tories - they are becoming more and more conservative.

But to register my protest by voting for the monster into which they are turning? Still not convinced.

Would you vote for a bunch of Neo Nazis as a protest against Labour turning facist?

^ Godwin's Law!

I know he said 'neo'-nazis, but I'm calling it anyway!

THREAD OVER.

The power of the argument wins!

Cliche wins!

Thatcherism wins!

Socialism is dead!

you can start putting vikram

on your promotional material as one of the disenchanted labour voters who have embraced the new dawn of Dave.

He's brown as well.

WIN FREAKIN' WIN!

:D

a vote for Labour

is a vote for the Data Communications Bill.

:D

and he lives in vibrant Shoreditch!

He still thinks your policies are

"shitty".

The man's just disenchanted, as are we all. That says nothing in favour of the conservatives. They are simply capitalising on the fact that their opposition is, frankly, crap.

And now I am going to the gym...

what Labour has done is absolutely terrible

but I'm 100% sure that if the Conservatives were in power now and had been for the 2005 bombings and so on they'd be enacting the exact same legislation right now.

that's the thing really

the older you get you realise that they are mostly a bunch of cunts, irrespective of party.
The way the Tories are laying into Labour at the moment about the economy which is largely attributable to a global crisis is completely absurd. They wouldn't have done any better, and won't handle it better if they get in. I can't believe people fall for it.
But then Labour acted exactly the same in opposition because it is the way of our politics to concentrate on shooting down the opposition rather than debating issues constructively.

exactly

The terror bill was a wet dream come true for some tories and you had them all voting against it to try and shame the government.

On the other side, you had a lot of Labour MPs voting for some ludicrous legislation that they probably weren't that keen on to keep themselves in power.

The whole charade pissed me off more than the damn bill getting through.

cocaine psychosis

well it has abandon its defintion

and its MEPs are much better than conservitive.
also you have contradicted all your other posts on politics with this one.
