Yes! JAG yes, but I've organised an all dayer for Sunday August 3rd, and it could well be the best gig ever. Anyone who can get to this and doesn't come is a silly billy.
THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH COVERS :
An all day spectacular showcasing the cream of the current crop of British alt-rock, and paying tribute to the American greats of the late 80's and early 90's that influenced them. Bands will play a minimum of two covers each by their chosen band, interwoven with their own lesser known, but equally worthy indie rock masterpieces.
Sunday 3rd August at The Windmill, Brixton
SPECIAL GUEST HEADLINER as JONATHAN RICHMAN AND THE MODERN LOVERS!
No lies - it's only 50/50 at this stage whether he can do it or not, but we could well have a very special guest along to perform with an assembly of friends as the last of three Massachusetts bands on the bill, seminal talky-art-rock troupe The Modern Lovers. NB. It's not actually Jonathan Richman.

STUFFY AND THE FUSES are THE PIXIES!
Britain's premier drummer / lead vocalist (since the sad retirement from music of Phil Collins) Stuffy, and his band The Fuses, make the mammoth trek from ... round the corner, to take on Boston's finest The Pixies. Expect crashing drums, angular guitars, pounding bass, whirring keyboard, plenty of alt-rock related banter. And some Pixies songs!

4 OR 5 MAGICIANS are GUIDED BY VOICES! Fresh from gaining a Lamacq single of the week for recent 7" 'Change The Record' and an interview as his "New Favourite Band", Brighton's 4 or 5 Magicians return to The Windmill to become Dayton, Ohio lo-fi rock giants Guided By Voices for the night. Expect a full 40 minute Guided By Voices set comprising songs from the classic 1987 - 1995 period!

GIANT ROBOT AND THE CITY OF TOKYO are ARCHERS OF LOAF!
Norwich has produced some great bands over the past few years, and sadly, due to the A11 being such a shit road, they haven't got out enough. Well rejoice then, as we bring you probably the best of the lot, Giant Robot and the City Of Tokyo, for a rare London gig (and last before vocalist/guitarist Mikey relocates indefinitely to America). Giant Robot take on Tim from The Windmill's favourite band, the kings of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and probably the most underrated band of all time, Archers Of Loaf.

PALE MAN MADE are SONIC YOUTH!
Pale Man Made are from Newcastle but are making the arduous 5 (or 6, or 7) hour journey to London to play for us. They recently gained a Huw Stephens album of the week for their debut record 'Oh My Treasured Things', and have a drummer who is the double of Steve Shelley. Fittingly, they will perform a couple of the hits of New York alt-rock pinoeers Sonic Youth for us, amongst their own melody-laden pop gems.

FAVOURS FOR SAILORS are WEEZER!
Adopted Londoners Favours For Sailors always sounded great as a three piece, but since recruiting ex-4 or 5 Magicians guitarist Matt Hayward (now known as Maltese Falcon) to the fold they have opened up a veritable pandora's box of guitar possibilites. One of which being that they can take on replicating the famous duelling guitar assualt of Californian geek-rock legends Weezer.

DUTCH HUSBAND are SEBADOH!
Bournemouth is the last place you'd expect to find the best band in the UK, but if you venture down to the Dorset coast and catch Dutch Husband on the right night, then you may well come away thinking you had! But thanks to us you don't have to (though I would recommend going, it has a lovely beach!) as we've brought them here to The Windmill for an ultra-rare London outing. A member down as their bass player is off travelling the world, the band take on classic Massachusetts slacker 3-piece Sebadoh.

HOUR HANDS are BUILT TO SPILL!
Hour Hands are from Brighton and always have been - a refreshing, organic, homegrown talent, and a shining beacon in a music scene flooded by well dressed, but ultimately souless, mediocre, production line bands churned out by the music college. If there was any band in the UK to take on the jaunty pop (i'm guessing we'll be looking at Distopian Dream Girl rather than Randy Described Eternity here!) of Boise, Idaho's Built To Spill, then it is Hour Hands. See if you can tell which are covers and which aren't! As the seminal Built To Spill Record is titled, "there's nothing wrong with love". There's also nothing wrong with covers!

Doors at 4:00pm ... Free BBQ at 4:15pm ... First band on at 5:00pm ... Last band finish at 11:15pm ... Entry : £6.
this is the best thing EVER.
this sounds fun!
why has there not been more response to this?!
are people not opening the thread?
This is a gig, whether you realise or not, that 90% of the readership on here would absolutely love.
I know I'm putting it on, but this is genuinely the best lineup of small UK bands you will see anywhere this year, or probably any year - and then thrown into the bargain, you get to hear great songs by some of the best bands of all time too!
very brave ^^
or stupid. we'll find out...
if you come to the gig you will!
Trust me though it's gonna be amazing. There is not one band on there that won't do the bands they are covering justice.
Dude I got a massive thing to ask
Seeing I have been to many of your shows & Hour Hands & I am traveling to London specificly for this show which in all fairness I can't afford & gave you a FREE place at my challet as well as FREE beer and fags at ATP may I say this:
GUESTLIST
well Matthew...
if it was my place to do this then I would. But due to the size of The Windmill (140 capacity at a push), and the fact that there are, by my maths, already about 33 band members in for free (plus the few locals who the landlord lets in for free), we are operating a strict no guestlist for anyone policy so the bands get paid properly. This includes you, my dad, anyone else not in any of the bands, and anyone elses dad. Hope you understand. Sorry!
Le Sigh :(
I usually don't think much of covers
but I think this is quite a good idea, I'd probably go if it were close.
!
more love for this please
OOOH
some dis person put this up as a news story pronto!
i actually can't believe the lack of response to this!
This sounds great
Request for Goin' Against Your Mind for Hour Hands as Built To Spill.
I'll come!
I will go IF and ONLY IF...
you tell me, by way of PM, who the possible special guest headliner is.
your loss!
as in
thats a bit of a silly thing to say, considering how good the rest of the lineup is and the fact that i'm not going to tell you as there is no point telling people who it is when there is only a 50/50 chance he'll do it as inevitably it will end up as chinese whispers that he's definitely doing it and that won't do anyone any favours.
Is he English?
no
it's Tom Waits.
Oops!
No it's not Tom Waits. And yes he is English. I'm not answering any more questions on this!
:-p
I bet it's Darren Hayman
haha i actually asked darren hayman
to do a set of Hefner songs with Esiotrot as his backing band. He wasn't up for it. Probably understandably, it would have been a bit weird. Esiotrot were going to play regardless and be Pavement but singer Duncan is on holiday.
I wondered where Pavement were :(
I will probably be there anyway though, because those are some of my favourite bands being covered and I love you and I love the pun you've used to name the event even more.
wooo
do it - this is going to be the gig of the year. In a way I wish I wasn't playing / organising so I could fully enjoy it!
But if you don't tell anyone
then people like me will just make up completely unfounded rumours to annoy you.
!!!!!!
He just PM'd me!! It's Jeff Mangum!!!
^like that
;-)
I may or may not know who it is because he told me when he was drunk
but I wont say either :)
oops
and thanks
don't say anything because it is still 50/50 and will probably remain that way until right up to the gig!
You might as well tell everyone now
ok
it's Cliff Richard.
really awesome idea
I love a (good) cover
although:
you should've had someone appearing as The Replacements, who would then do covers of songs the Replacements covered.
Eddie Argos...
is a massive Jonathan Richman fan.
just in case anyone missed this yesterday...
I'm still surprised at the lack of response! What are people's thoughts on this?
I've just realised that I may very well be able to attend this
maybe
:D:D
ooooeeeooo
Rivers looks just like Buddy Holly
unfortunately I'm going to be on a train travelling across Siberia
otherwise I'd definitely be there. Dutch Husband, Favours and Giant Robot are brilliant.
I've heard the special guest headliner is Sam Duckworth, aka Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly.
get cape
still not convinced about him
amazing.
and it's the Colour Ride alldayer on Saturday 2nd. I might just sleep at the Windmill that night.
PS
if you want someone to DJ between bands, me and Daniel can do it. yeah?
