by walkingwithwolves

the jesus and mary chain - psychocandy
ABC - lexicon of love
orange juice - you can't hide your love forever
omd - s/t
the wedding present - bizarro
josef k - entomology (although released post 80s they were all recorded in the 80s)
the fire engines - lubricate your living room
au pairs - playing with a different sex
young marble giants - colossal youth
wire - a bell is a cup until it is stuck

i took out:
talking heads - fear of music
gang of four - entertainment
because they were released in 1979.
i also did have two orange juice albums in there but i thought it a bit much. it is really hard to choose.

also in no order because that would actually be impossible.

Was The Cure 'Disintegration' '89 or '90?

Because if it was '89 that must be up there. If not go for '17 seconds' or 'Faith' or one of that crowd.

it was '89

i'm not a huge cure fan. like them, but meh. i know they were pretty influential and stuff but they never really struck a chord with me. apart from the fact my mum used to look like robert smith.

*STRUCK

not stuck. jeeeeesus, i cannot write threads on the music board. you lot must make me nervous.

10!

That's totally impossible. I was looking through the Pitchfork Top 80s Albums the other day, there's so much good stuff on there.
http://www.listsofbests.com/list/54

i know. i just picked my faourite 10.

i guess i should have asked what everyone else's favourite 10 was. :(
i'm not authorised to pick the "best 10 without DiSpute"

OK...

Dexy's - Don't Stand Me Down
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Big Black - Atomizer
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
Black Flag - Damaged
Birthday Party - Junkyard
David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff
Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique
X - Los Angeles

Actually...take out Junkyard and put in Hex Enduction Hour..

or Surfer Rosa, or Repeater or Computer World or Nation of Millions or 3 Feet High and Rising or Remain in Light or My Life in the Bush of Ghosts or Bummed. It's totally impossible

Repeater

is 1990! otherwise it'd have been in mine too.

Really?

I've realised that I also left out Double Nickels...Think I'll give up.

I bought that yesterday

I can't stop listening to it. great cover too.

Reign in Blood!!

I'd totally forgotten about 80s metal! I'm not even a massive metal fan but theres loads of good metal from the 80s that could potentially break into my top 10

You forgot

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Pixies - Sufa Rosa
XTC - Skylarking
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Arcitecture & Morality
Prince - Purple Rain

re: omd

s/t is better.
and the others, not fussed about. heh

Llody Cole and the Commotions

Rattlesnakes needs to be there. And perhaps Bunnymen.....Heaven Up Here or Ocean Rain.

These were coming from me too

I was going to say Crocodiles by Echo though...

The production on s/t is horrible

My favourite is Dazzle Ships

Your list is wrong for the fact that...

you've missed out "Sign 'O' The Times", which is, according to some (and I'd probably agree) the greatest album of the 80s.

read my post above.

i should have stated at the start, that these are MY personal favourites. i just wanted to compare top 10s :'(

Okay,

my bad :-)

no way

Purple Rain completely destroys it. The first half of both discs would challenge PR song for song, but still fail as a singular piece. Add in It, Beautiful Night and all that guff and you have a wildly inconsistent album

I'm the opposite,

I think the sum of the album is greater than its parts. I think it's what Prince was trying to create and achieve that's more impressive than anything else, if ya get me. But then, I would agree with you that if you removed a few of the weaker songs, the album would be a lot stronger. But then, I would say that for The White Album too. If you removed guff like Honey Pie, Do it in the Road and Piggies etc, then the album would be a lot stronger.

Is this open to anyone?

Cos if so mine are:

Yazoo - Upstairs At Eric's
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell
Talking Heads - Little Creatures
The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta
Elton John - Too Low For Zero
The Human League - Dare
Paul Simon - Graceland
Squeeze - East Side Story

A little predictable, obvious choices in there, but most of my 80s album listening was influenced by my Dad, so there it is.

YES

:D you got the idea right!

Certainly Not!

Thankfully my Dad never was a Dire Straits fan. :)

Joy Division - Closer

NIN - Pretty Hate Machine

they'd probably get in my top 10

also

Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back

and probably others that i cant think of right now

Scary Monsters (and super creeps)

Porcupine - EATB
Heaven Up Here - EATB
Kaleidoscope - Siouxsie
Faith - Cure
Psychocandy - JAMC
Surfer Rosa - Pixies
Isn't Anything - MBV
Daydream Nation - SY
Power, Corruption, and Lies - NO

Hmm (in no real order)

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Paul Simon - Graceland
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
Prince - Purple Rain
The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
R.E.M.- Lifes Rich Pageant
My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

doh!

put in Surfer Rosa in place of Isn't Anything

in no order

Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
Husker Du - Flip Your Wig
Sonic Youth - Sister
Minutemen - What Makes a Man Start Fires?
Descendents - Milo Goes to College
Beat Happening - Black Candy
Meat Puppets - II
Mudhoney - Superfuzz Big Muff
My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

not sure about the last one.

i'm trying to not list more than 1 album by the same band. i'm tempted by a Black Flag record, but reading back through it, it literally looks like i'm listing stuff straight out of Our Band Could Be Your Life...

and reading that pitchfork list

Murmur and Vs. are great shouts too.

Altern 8 - Full On

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

the stone roses deserve to be deleted from existance.

along with the smiths.
contraversial.

contrOversial

we've spoke about this

Oh dear

whatever you do, don't look at my top 10

don't worry.

i'm not a music fascist or anything, i just hate those two bands so much. bad memories.

The The - Infected

I thought all DiSers loved that album.

And just for me The Perfect Prescription by Spacemen 3, it is genuinly in my top ten of all time, but since ive already had an argument on here about it today, Ill just bring it up again.

I don't know anywhere near enough 80s music

but here's my effort:

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
New Order - Technique
Pixies - Doolittle
Stone Roses - s/t
OMD - Dazzle Ships
The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come
Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom
Public Enemy - Nation of Millions
REM - Green
Galaxie 500 - On Fire

I very nearly put the Joshua Tree in there but didn't want to embarrass myself

Green

Is a really good shout. So overlooked in their catalogue.

Daniel Johnston - Hi, How Are You?

And why has no-one mentioned C86? Surely the single greatest and most important compilation of all time?

Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever

Associates - Sulk
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
REM - Life's Rich Pageant
The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
ABC - Lexicon of Love
Echo and the Bunnymen - Porcupine
Joy Divison - Closer
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones

Bauhaus - In the Flat Field

should feature in a top ten.

I would say a Monochrome Set album, but their singles do it for me better than a whole album.

GOOD THREAD

What's with all the gay indie choices though? 80s is all about THE FUNK, preferably with a bit of slap bass thrown in for good measure;

Scritti Politti- Cupid & Psyche '85
Talking Heads- Speaking In Tongues
Prince- Dirty Mind
Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique
Arthur Russell- Another Thought
Gary Numan- I, Assassin
Michael Jackson- Thriller
Scritti Politti- Provision
Public Enemy- It takes a nation...
Level 42- S/T (YESSSSSSSS)

+ notable mentions for Brothers I Arms and The Stone Roses

I WIN

WINNER (so far...)

From what I can gather, PUBLIC ENEMY- IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK is leading with 6 consecutive votes. Pretty good going considering we're all part of the white, privileged, middle class elite.

Skids: The Absolute Game
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The House of Love - s/t
The Railway Children : Recurrence

Black Flag - My War (I like how painful it sounds)
Mission of Burma - Signals, Calls and Marches (This totally counts, Adam)

Minor Threat - Out of Step (Betray alone means this makes the list)

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

Posted too early, arse

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
